I want to get your opinion on something. Do you think the furry Fandom is flooded with wolves, foxes, huskies, ect.?
Your fursona is meant to recognize YOU and YOU are the only one who can decide what animal fits your personality, lifestyle, or traits. I get that wolves have a variety of personalities. There's the aggressive side, maternal, loyal, faithful, fearsome, and introverted. But so many other animals have the traits. Would it kill anyone, especially newer members of the fandom, to choose a different animal, or at least have a wider variety of characters they use?
Your fursona doesn't have to be your spirit animal, totem, or power animal. It's just representing who you are. My spirit animal is a white-tailed deer and yet my fursona is a dingo, because deer is my RL personality, and the dingo is my online personality.
The animal kingdom is so large and diverse. So are people. Humans can be so different visually and have completely different mindsets from one another, yet we all have the same core DNA.
Does anyone give two furs about African wild dogs, jackals, or coyotes? Dingoes, which are like, Australian wolves (just kidding, here)? What about domestic breeds, apart from Spitz or 'wolflike' dogs?
I feel like pop culture is trying to glamorize wolves, even though NAG wolves are no longer endangered or a primary concern. Yes, wolves are interesting, captivating, and powerful animals. They mean so much in many cultures' lore and mythlogy. But there are other animals that need our attention, though they may not be as majestic as 'wolfs' but there are just as important. Orange orangutans, tigers, servals, bears, snakes, fish, orcas, leopards, cheetahs, dingoes, kangaroo, horses, Peregrine falcons... they all have a story and a world that needs to be exposed.
So why just wolves?

I find it odd as well.
I have had my fursona to be a Husky even b4 I knew what they were.
But I am thinking that I need a second fursona to display my social side... But isn't that inherint w both humans and dogs?
I truly have only even identified w huskies and humans. And anthro of both is precisely what I am.
-
This is like asking "Why just <x race> in <x country>?"
It's nothing to worry about.

If your sona represents you, then you don't need any others to do so. He's just you, so any quirks, traits, sides to you are reflected in him. I consider alt characters to be for when it's not you.

Im a wolf elf
But I choose wolf as my main sona because theyre a beautiful animal, majestic and powerful. Well that and it was part of his story. But they're an animal that roams free, they live life their way and nobody elses.
I have 12 other sonas as well
Dragon
Roo
Siberian tiger
An anthro wolf, yes I know
Jackal
Sergal in the works
Fox, hush
Cow
Horse
Otter
An aakor
Deer
Badger
Kalan is my main cause he was my first and the one I fell in love with the most

That's true. It is what it is. Can't be helped.
I really wanted to express this though. I'm big on wildlife protection and awareness so this is the kind of thing I like to ask about.
If your fursona is a wolf and if anyone gives you cap about it, then that's their own problem. No reason to change anything for just one person, if you're happy.
-
There's nothing bad about it. You are making trouble out of nothing.
-
Well it is true but it's your opinion in making a secondary. But it would be nice to not have so many canines some animals or creature aren't used at all in the fandom... And what bugs me is some may just pick a Fursona with no reason but to just have a Fursona (especially stole some pictures of furries they found on the web to call it theirs) ... I knew a few who did that and then had no clue what the fandom was... Anyways a wolf, husky, fox, ect matches you then go ahead.
-
I think for some, having multiple fursonas is cool, typically when their main is a wolf.
But for me, I have just one. Mainly because that is what describes me.
I am currently working on my fursonas design on a ref sheet, and I am happy w it.
I think at some point I might make other fursonas, but simply for the purpose of rping.
I would gladly be seen as my fursona, because the only difference between me an my fursona is I am human and he, if you put it that way, is not.
And when I can b my fursona, I guess I'm a bit less self conscious.
-
I agree with george, but must say, its THEIR CHOICE for what fits their personality..and also what they find appealing to base a fursona on, nobody should judge others for how popular their fursona is
-
hey, im an aakor, totally different, x3 i have wings! and its something that i think is completely okay, i mean, its not something to worry about
-
OH HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEECK NO.
-
Oh yes.
I can see myself making an oc w wings, but not my fursona.
-
Avians for the win(g)!

thats a corgi
-
Oh OK.
-
Not too many wolves, too many canines. There's a higher fox count than wolf count.
-
Technically, foxes aren't canids
-
Actually, last survey taken, more wolves than foxes.
-
In my case, while I was considering something else, I based mine on a character I had started with back in high school when I would RP on the Yahoo chat rooms. That alone should say something about how old it was lol XD
-
Thank you for letting me humbly air my two-scents on this.
You killed me.
-
The reason I chose the wolx is because I've always loved wolves since I was little, and the personality fits me well. The reason for a hybrid is for the more social part of my personality, and the fox for more independent/shy. It only really bothers me when people have no real reason, or they fill them with 100 pounds of muscles

For me, my gamertag and username was ShirokuTheHusky for everything even before I was furry.

Maybe you already were furry, but didn't realise it?

People can be fans of anthropomorphic animals and have a fursona and whatnot long before "officially" joining the fandom. I've done the same.
-
I didn't even know about the fandom till over a month ago.

Ok, but

-
I've been a fan of anthropomorphic creatures since I was a little kid, way before learning of the fandom. I even had a cat fursona before knowing it was even called that. I just referred to it as a "representation of myself" or something along those lines. XD
-
Please don't get off-topic. :)
-
This is the random board, so it's okay. :P
-
'Kay then. ^-^
-
Ppl are licking me in group chat O.o
They aren't even furry.
-
Maybe that's the reason there's so many wolves tybalt, you get the same deal as picking a dog, but in a more fierce package.
-
My spirit animal is also a white tailed deer, and I nearly changed my fursona to reflect. Though I will admit I'm not sure I entirely believe in spirit animals despite my Native American heritage. I chose bunny because I felt it was a more accurate behavioral and personality portrayal of myself. My fursona is me, so other than his species and physicality, we are the same person. That way when I meet people online, they actually (sort of) meet me. :)
-
Never too many. It's all just personal preference or personal connection. I've loved wolves since before I even knew about the fandom.
-
Agreed with Silvermyst, not enough wolves!
I also been into furry fandom way before I knew what a fandom was.
Only recently have I loved foxes (starting in 2014) they are cute and funny. Before that cats where my to favorite animals (now they 2nd)
-
*looks around carefully, making sure no wolves are about* I claim this land in the name of Foxes everywhere *salutes flag* hehe *runs away*
-
The levies were broken by the tsunami before the actual tsunami
-
Personally I don't see many saber toothed cats. Or if you want to be very specific, Smilodon Populator. Most are S. Fatalis
-
Cats ftw
Daily schedule:
1 hour eating
1 hour licking fur
22 hours sleeping on your couch
-
I think there's more foxes than wolves.
Personally I don't see the appeal of foxes. I suppose they're cute, but too energetic and noisy for me.
-
fox + wolf
2 most common species
= wolx
2/10 too much creative
-
well i think that the society of wolves, structured hierarchy and clear roles in a group is attractive to many people, i even like it, but really to many isnt a thing here i think
