Title: Does Anybody Else Here Experience Chills from Music?
Post by: Halei-Helai on October 01, 2015, 02:42:54 PM
I am sure that at least a few of you here experience chills from music. The proper name is musically-induced frisson, and it is a wild ride! I get it pretty intensely from music, and I have been able to figure out exactly what kinds of musical phrasing and characteristics brings this about. Pantera's Cemetery Gates does it to me almost every time, as does Velvet Revolver's Slither, King Crimson's In the Court of the Crimson King, and a ton of other songs. Sometimes it is almost like being struck by lightning, and depending on the song I have to take a break afterwards since it can be so intense.

Anybody else?

Sometimes I find that one song that does this, but it's not often.
When it does happen though, it usually is closely followed by tears of joy.

Been a while since I've found a song like that though :P

I have probably spent too much time analyzing what gives me frisson and what doesn't. I have it down to a science, so much so that if there is a song that I haven't heard in a while, as long as I can remember what the song is like I can accurately predict what elements give me frisson.

What songs do this for you? There may be something in common between each of them.

PANTERA!!!

I get it a lot, most strongly in music. Depending on my mood, the songs that I get it from are typically,

The God That Failed, Fade To Black, Until It Sleeps, Hero Of The Day, Eye Of The Beholder (Metallica)

Expendable Youth (Slayer)

(sic), Tattered And Torn, AOV, Gehenna (Slipknot)

Let's Get This Party Started, Somebody Someone, No Way, Daddy [warning! That's some heavy emotional stuff!!!], Falling Away From Me, No One's There (KoRn) <= There's infinitely more from KoRn, It would take a while!

Your Soul Is Mine, One More Day, Sun Doesn't Rise (Mushroomhead)

How Will I Laugh Tomorrow, Nobody Hears (Suicidal Tendencies)

Darkness, Inside The Fire, Asylum (Disturbed)

Nice! Is there any particular aspect of the songs that you think give you the chills, like a certain instrument playing a passage or the emotional content of the lyrics?  I am always curious what other peoples' triggers are. Two of mine are rapid arpeggiation and suspended chords. I know somebody else who gets frisson from perfectly matched vocal harmony.

It's just the emotion it drives. Not a set instrument, lyric, or anything. Just therapy emotion. It's when you make a connection to the emotion of the song. It's that, "this song gets me" feeling.

Always gets me, because it sounds like the exciting playful feeling I'm always seeking in life. XD

This happens to me usually with songs that start out very slow and calm and then build up to an epic climax.

Like this song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VokdpAJm9vs (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VokdpAJm9vs) (Stacked Crooked - The New Pornographers)

The ending always gets me. I love it.  ^_^

The emotions can sometimes be overwhelming though and I start feeling a bit depressed after the moment ends. Though if I listen to the same song too often I start to get desensitized.

I get this a lot, usually when I'm just sitting on the bus listening to music! Eminem and good bass drops send chills down my spine, along with sadder or more depressing songs

Every once in a while listening to a choral piece or a concert arrangement for a band or orchestra. It's rare but it happens. Or if occurs if it's a song that has memory to me.

Hm, I don't know about chills, but I do sometimes experience little tingles in my brain with certain music. It makes me kinda sleepy  X3 I'm not sure exactly what will cause it, but I've had it from really beautiful singing voices, especially when sung acapella(just the voice, NO 'background music'. Preferably with a little echo). Also from electronic music or edited/autotuned singing on occasion.

And of course, there's just music that makes me feel more positive or energetic, like power metal or triumphant musical theatre songs(like Les Mis  XP )

Amethyst, I tried to quote you but the quoting is busted somehow...

This is something a bit different I think, possibly ASMR. ASMR is a calming, soothing tingly feeling that is caused by a serotonin, whereas frisson is pure dopamine. The two feel extremely different, at least coming from somebody who experiences both of them with great intensity.

I mostly get frisson from music, but there is one song I know of for sure that gives me ASMR, De Luxe by Lush:

This makes me feel entirely different than Slither by Velvet Revolver:

Both feelings are pretty awesome though.

Oh, thanks. I was thinking about that sort of feeling but I couldn't quite remember the name of it  XP

Sometimes I do, mainly with certain ballads, but also has happened with some more energetic music. Usually breakdowns and transitions are the most common 'cause'.

Also things like certain scenes in certain movies that makes me shiver quite a lot; A notable example is from my all-time favorite movie where there's a scene of this wolf howling out into the distance that always makes me shiver every single time, even after having watched it half a dozen times throughout the years.

But generally these aren't that major and quite specific, not really anything I feel very strongly on a regular basis. It's kinda only caused in certain quite specific situations under the right circumstances.

I am very affected by music, though it's mostly just mental stimulation rather than physical feelings. Music that carries a lot of emotion is also what I usually listen to. Not necessarily really as in the "Emo"-genre but more in the way of music that delivers a lot of feelings and emotions. Be it happy music with a lot of energy, sad music with an overall dull tone, inspirational music with a positive and interesting tone or some heavy metal with an angry/upset theme etc.. Thus a lot of alternative rock and a little bit of metalcore is mainly what you'll find in my music library~

---
ASMR however, that's something I very much enjoy on a regular basis. I quite often put on my headphones and bring up some videos on Youtube that is made specifically to induce ASMR as I find it to be very stimulating and relaxing.

I need to be able to relax and focus on the ASMR contend, mainly the sounds, with minimal distractions before I'm really affected by it myself and start feeling the tingles. Though once I get to that point it's quite often the tingles sort of progress from the back of my head and help cause chills/shivers throughout the rest of my body.

Yeah,I mostly get that when I bump onto a dubstep song with a decent drop. I often also create fantastical events/characters in my mind to go along with a certain song that I like, and that can give me the chills too . :3

If I get a really amazing idea from a song/lyrical stanza, or the song just fits the environment I'm in I can get those chills and shivers. As a writer, roleplayer or anything, I always try to find music befitting a character, scene or location. I've never had something yet that I couldn't put music to. Oddly, I rarely experience those chills when it's not in regards to at least part of my own creativity.

Then you have Nightwish's videos for The Greatest Show On Earth. That shit both breaks my heart and makes me quiver with amazement.

I get chills whenever I listen to my All-State piece "Aurora Awakes." It makes you feel like you are in Alaska, watching Aurora Borealis dance across the sky.

The past three songs have given me not only chills but that swelling of power as well, that kind of feeling of 'I'm ready for this. Let's rock!'

Id - Purpose (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bio99hoZVYI) from Fire Emblem Awakening
Heartache (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4DfArO6TMEg) Richaad EB's rock cover of the Undertale song of the same name
Wally's Theme (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9sX_54hHcEE) from Pokemon ORAS
