Title: School Thread for School People
Post by: Halei-Helai on October 01, 2015, 02:31:06 PM
Hello all. It is that magical time of the year again where everybody is hitting the books, cramming for exams, and hoping that when they get called on to answer a question that they don't make a fool of themselves. School is back in full swing! I figured we could use a dedicated place to talk about it.

So how is it going for everybody? I am having a pretty good semester so far. It is the first time I have been knee-deep in math for a while and I am loving every minute of it! I might change my tune though when I get my exams back at some point next week, though I think I did well. Walking around campus is great; I am getting lots of exercise. Meeting a bunch of new people is always cool too! I am hoping that maybe I will actually run into another furry, though I won't really hold my breath on that one.

How about y'all?

Minister of Health warns: School kills

So does life, really. Everybody who has ever lived has died. It's a conspiracy, I tell ya!

Well I'm in boring high again... Honestly wanted to be home schooled, I get stressed out and overthink in exams, quizzes, test, ect. It's hard for me. And sometimes I completely lose it and start to doodle or stare at my paper plainly.
Another is too many people hit on me... Flattering and all but I'm taken, others respectly understand however stalkers, or fuckboys, ect. Do not and tend to screw around with me
I don't enjoy school one bit... Although it's fun being in clubs and making friends with people so yea.

I'm in uni does that count?

This Sem is going ok. Four of the five courses I'm doing are going fine I think.

Nuclear physics is decent, got an assignment due in 12 days that I haven't started on!
Optics is better, did pretty well in the MidSesh (got 2nd! :D)
Security Engineering is awesome, one of my favourite courses and I'm doing really well in it
Biology is ok, theory isn't hard but the practicals are challenging!
Security Engineering Workshop is meh, haven't been able to do much in our assignment and I've just felt bad all around.

Absolutely! I am attending a university presently as well, and so excited to be doing it too! That sounds like a pretty intense course-load you have there. I am only taking two classes at present. Perhaps for the spring semester I will have more.

I liked the biology classes I took but I hated the labs. That dissuaded me from going for a biology degree pretty quickly.

It's going pretty well, except I have a quite incompetent teacher.

I got a report I was failing the class, so I talk to her saying I had been turning everything in. She had it all, she just forgot to put it in the gradebook. Before you say it's an isolated event, this is a common problem in her class.

0n the positive side of things, I have a decent group of friends and the lunches here are mostly edible! I can get my credits all done by December, so I'll probably be graduating by then!

Going well for me as far as academics go. I have A's and B's.
Socially, not so great. I have a great group of friends to sit with at lunch but I have no classes with any of them, and I'm getting picked on by this one girl because of my voice and the way I dress.
I'm also in my third year of marching band.

Same here. California school system for the loss.

I've got a math teacher who has done nothin to improve my learning experience. I actually find that it is easier, faster, and more efficient in general to just read the textbook and teach myself.

I also feel that my Government class topic will become much harder to do after the recent shooting up in Oregon. I am sure you can guess what my topic is.

Doing pretty good so far. I'm in a 5 year program where you get your HS diploma and a 2 year college degree for free. I only have a year left which is pretty awesome. I don't really get to see my HS friends anymore because we have different college classes, but other than that it's ok.

Same here. I took a bunch of AP and dual credit/honors classes in high school, so I was super busy with homework and stressful stuff. I guess it was kind of worth it though since it let me get a bunch of college credit out of the way early.

I'm taking some relatively 'easy' classes(liberal arts math ftw) my first semester so I can relax a little bit. The school itself is really nice and spread out. (It's got a huge pond/tiny lake in the middle of it too ^^) It's a junior college, so I still need to figure out exactly where I'm going to transfer to after I get an associates' degree.

I was failing my math class because I wasn't doing the practice worksheets (I've done this class before so it's pointless to do them) and it turns out I didn't even need to be in the class anyway.  T_T

I like highschool! I work hard and get good grades, and that's something I can be proud of. I can show off, my art, (I just am better than most people at my school. Reason being most of the good people probably got drafted to the academy.) And since I'm pretty congenial with everyone, a majority of the teachers/students like me.

I think this fall semester is going better than last fall, anyway, but I'm afraid it might start to be a struggle again as we get closer to the holiday season and I start getting near-overtime hours at work despite the fact they know I'm a student, because it just gets that busy. I'll also be graduating with my A.S. in computer science, but that means I'm only half-way done.

I've been talking to the admissions office at a four-year school that I'm hoping to get into because I'll get scholarships for being a transfer student and the offspring of an alumni. It's exciting, but also just a slight bit terrifying because it'll be a big change and I'm not sure I'll be able to keep up with the increased workload while also keeping my dead-end cashier job. Not that I'm not willing to quit and dedicate myself to my academics, I actually almost welcome the excuse, but a lot of things are up in the air right now.

Getting A's means following the curriculum well. School curriculum are really boring and mind-numbing. You can get A's and have fun, but it's surprising if someone has fun by getting A's.

It's always sad to see a school that has staff who are horribly undereducated about current technology. Web design is a joke, considering someone thought the monthly calender should be blue on black. This lasted for at least three years. It's also poor to see a teacher trying to show us a video preceded by a Durex commercial, or who requires Twitter for their class (which is blocked on the school network).

Meanwhile, we have a laser cutter. I see no problems that might arise.

High school IT systems are always a joke. My high school had a password for their admin profile written down in a text document (I guess in case they forgot it?) It was in a hidden directory, but could be accessed through the cmd so i dunno. xD

My community college had a costume contest today. I wish I knew about it, so I could have made something awesome....but I digress. Top places went to Link and some girl who made a cool Charizard-armor cosplay. People were also allowed to go to classes in full costume too. Making a mental reminder for next year...

Holy crap, I am starting to hate my college work.  Not because its overly difficult or that it takes up too much time, but rather just most of my classes are trash.

I'm a sophmore in engineering, and what my college does is throw a lot of general science stuff at you, along with other gen ed classes.  While I understand that they want all engineers to have decent background info on many areas, the execution of this idea is horrible.  You often end up in these overly complicated, overly difficult classes that barely teach you anything about the actual science.  Semesters quickly turn into drudges of meaningless homework, homework that neither helps you understand the materials or prepare you for the exams.  Exams are just all over the place in terms of difficulty and what can be expected.  And in the end, there's almost some sort of curve that forces some people to fail, but can be abused if you know what you're doing.  And in the very end of it all, you'll probably never use it in your major.  It's all demoralizing.

I would probably say that the silver lining is that I only have one more semester to put up with this, but next semester seems like that this entire song and dance will be going out with a bang.

I have to start signing up for classes next semester too, plus have an advising meeting next week to figure out all the details of getting my degree. I sometimes feel lazy because I'm not going into the STEM fields. Science is awesome(esp. environmental science), and math is super useful, but I just don't want a career in them :p The humanities and creative arts are more my thing.

My classes so far are still going fine, though I figure things will get more difficult when I transfer over to a 4-year college in a few years. I'm actually coming across the problem of not having enough space to take all the classes I want to.

I've been trying to drink more water lately so I can relate...  X3 Teachers at my school don't really care though, so you can leave class whenever you want for a bathroom break.

For my last math test, the class average was a 53. I got an 87 :p The teacher's adding a curve of 20 points onto everyone's test so that's pretty rad. I'm also making a bunch of mugs in ceramics. I know what I'm giving everyone for Christmas!

Ah yes, the freedom in college when literally no one cares if you leave or enter the room.  Except I never use it, but still, nice little commodity to have.

There are a LOT of curves when you get into college.  Just about all of my courses have some sort of curve.  Probably rightfully so since all of the courses that have some sort of curve have low grades overall.

I still need to figure out where I would want to transfer to after I get my associate's degree since I don't think many universities in my city have the major I want.

I'm aiming for linguistics, preferably with a concentration in European languages. There's a good university a couple hours away from me that has it so I'm considering there. If I can't make it work I might major in anthropology or similar.

I'd also love to study abroad but that's a bit difficult to do...

I would keep the creative field stuff as a hobby initially, just so that you're not overloaded with work.  But yea, I started drawing recently.  Its been a fun, albeit slow process.  Just know you'll need lots of time, whether you're creating various works or learning.

And if you're an American citizen, know that they tax your salary when you work abroad ON TOP of whatever taxes you must pay in the country you work in.  This has made a few thousand people revoke their citizenships.

Kinda decided to jump in on this thread X3
I'm currently in 9th grade, and I'm gonna attend a new school next year, which I'm really excited about, mainly because I don't really have any real friends at my current school, and the next school should be really accepting for different kind of people. So I'm not gonna be afraid to show, I'm a furry there X3

I've got two more weeks(this one and next week) left until my semester is over, which means I've got exams coming up very soon.

I've also got a big assignment in French class, having to do a dialogue in French with another classmate. Problem is my partner hasn't been very communicative; it's in two days and we haven't even got the basic script finished. Ergh  :S

Group project have always been annoying.  I always remember doing most of the work to make up for all of the slackers.
As for exams, I'll be with a friend of mine studying for our physics class.  He's right on the boarder of passing or failing, so he needs it really bad.  He flunked the first exam, but managed to pull through well for the second.

Speaking of end of the semester, what will you guys be doing for the winter break?

I traded pencils and books for a 5 year SECF contract with the United States Navy. X3

I'll head to college after. I think I'd major in mechanical studies or something electrical.

I can either live in the middle of nowhere for two years and go to community college, or live in a city and go to a college that I know for a fact that I will not be able to afford. I am not a fan of these choices.

Or you can join the Navy/Army/Marine/Air Force reserves, hold a civilian job and perform military duties as well, and receive benefits for free college and housing allowance. Just an idea, it's not for everyone.

Wooh, I survived the group project :0

I have over a month of winter break, but I don't know what I'll be doing then. Probably a combination of hanging around being lazy at home, finding some stuff to do with friends, and working on my Etsy shop...

Wow...

A month and 10 days to be precise  X3 The colleges and universities around my area usually last that long between fall and spring semesters. If you're in high school though, it's probably just a couple weeks right?

I'm sure it will be fine. Investigation is ongoing, its a half day, and some students exempted their exams. There is not much of a window for a shooting.

If there is one... screw code in. Why stay inside? Ill jump out a second story window, and run.

I remember in high school around winter time when there would be a lot of threats of violence.  None if it ever came into fruition.  The only time it did was when some edgelord brought in a BB gun.

Thinking about school is making me feel physically sick >.> It's impossible to get A's and I want to get all B's but our marking guidelines for assignments are really difficult to understand. I got C's in most of my subjects (Art, Biology, Maths and Modern History), a B in English (English has always been my strong point) and a D in Graphics.

It's my final year, too. I don't want to graduate at 19 ;.; I'll be the oldest! I'm just so scared. My parents expect me to get into uni as soon as I graduate too, but what if I don't get the marks in order to get into the course i want (Bach. Degree in Behavioural Science).

Ah, AP government. On the test I drew President Lincoln riding on a unicorn with Ben Franklin playing bass guitar. Too bad art doesn't give you any extra points but hopefully I at least made a grader chuckle...

Anyway, I still don't start school till the 19th or so. I'm looking forward to my classes, I think. I've been considering switching my major lately too. Maybe a major in psychology and a minor in philosophy? Also I only have two friends at my college and I haven't seen them in a month or so; I'm looking forward to seeing them. Hopefully I can make some more friends this semester, or at least be more social.

I also discovered ratemyproffesors.com recently, and I've basically learned that my world religions teacher is kind of a harsh grader, my literature teacher is super duper nice, and apparently my yoga teacher is kind of attractive XP

Only a week before college gets back in session and I get a call saying one of my classes has been dropped due to poor registration. And my parents are pestering me to find a new class since I only have 10 hours/4 classes this semester, but all the other classes are completely full. Also registration is closed so I'd have to call and see if I can work something out. Yaaaay -_-

I feel ya :V My senior year I took AP/honors English. My teacher assigned sooo much work, including a 20 page essay along with a bunch of other stuff. He also didn't seem to realize that a lot of people taking his class took other honors or AP classes besides his, and those were very busy too. Fun times.

I am currently learning a lesson in the definition of work this semester... AP European history, Dual-Enrollment Calculus, and AP Biology (online). I would DIE if I had to complete 20 page essays for English on top of that! Sounds like you had quite the senior year.

PS. NO CLUE how to end a double quote, plz forgive  :)

It's my username. The brackets make things funny ^^' But yeah, I had 5 AP AP classes that year, 2 of them being also dual credit/enrollment type things. My English teacher was just a little new I think, and after most of the classes brought it up he said he'll do better the next year. Too late for me though XD

Today I was at school when an acquaintance of mine approached me and showed this website:

sites.google.com/site/oconeediscriminationdatabase/home

The site has been taken down but as you can see just by the name, it seems like some website about discrimination in Oconee county made somewhat unproffesionally on google sites. The reality is that it was a list of so called "bigots" at my school (North Oconee High School). I was #3 on the list. I've been charged with homophobia, anti-gay views, and sexism. I am not sexist. Sure I am right wing, and sure I am not exactly pro gay, but I am also not parading around saying that. Not tto mention that doesnt make me a bigot in my mind. I want to punch some $hit.

If the site's not being made into a big deal, ignore them. If you don't act like a jerk towards other people then you're fine.  When I was in sixth grade I remember some kid making a similar site, albeit about inappropriate gossip involving students and teachers, not discrimination.

I agree with what Amethyst said. Just ignore it unless the site was a really big deal at your school. For a while I had some friends who thought some similar things about me and after talking to them a bit, they believed me that I'm not. Basically, just don't make a big deal about it, and if people ask or are upset about what the people who made the site said about you, as long as they're reasonable, there shouldn't be any problem at all.

PS. googled your high school to see what state you were in (to kind of get an idea of the situation). As long as I saw the right school I live in Georgia too  :)

Yes. Probably not too big a deal. Of the friends I have most are now referring to me as "3" over texts in a joking manner. One really gullible one believes the stuff... has made a note that I am now blocked on his phone :/ .

I'm a few weeks into my spring semester now, and so far all my classes seem good. I'm itching to start on some new ceramics projects too ^^ I decided to take a yoga class; my sister said she tried it before and wasn't a fan but I'm really liking it. Also it may sound weird, but my intro to theatre teacher kind of reminds me of an older Cheza... She even offhandedly mentioned fursuits on the first day X3

I'm also seriously considering changing my major to philosophy. I've gotten really into it lately, or rather I've been for awhile without realizing it. I still don't know what the career prospects are for that sort of field though...

My only problem is that I don't get to expose my true self and a lot of other people can't as well. I feel like they should at least allow neko ears and other things like that at my school, but nope, they just have to keep oppressing shit. It's really hurting my self esteem and making me feel bad.

:(
