Title: Me and my buddies are starting a metal band. Any advice?
Post by: HyenaKing on October 01, 2015, 03:28:40 AM
Hey, It's Grief. Me and some friends are starting a metal band. I can update it from here, but. I just need help since we're starting out. In all honesty, Im not sure how to manage this kind of thing.
If you got any advice or help, or have any questions or any discussion involving This, go ahead. As always, go to PM for off-topic or private things.
Right now, only a few things are set. (When I say we, I mean the whole group of people in the band. Whe i say My band ever, I mean Our band.)
(Hahah, Im really nervous in all honesty, I have not been on the forum for over a year, and im starting to accually get back into it..)

~Is Metal band, like the sound of Stone Sour possibly.
~The Band name is Neoculladia, or a species of Moth.
~I'm going to be the lead singer and/or main vocals.
~My friend Dave is playing the drums, and the backaround vocals.
~We are in need of some funds for miscellaneous things.
~We're shooting for a real unique look and feel compared to other music we like.

P.S. I plan on updating this as the band matures and progresses. We'll need all the help and support we can get!

Hey, I'm a bassist in a metal band!

I guess I'll start with management/songwriting advice.
1, make a practicing schedule!!!
2, use everyone's talents to your advantage. Someone very deep and have a good vocabulary? Use it! Sit down and write together. Riffs, bass lines, drum loops, etc.
3, show up on time to designated practice times
4, practice at least once a week together, and as much as possible on your own.
5, don't be afraid to mess around. Don't overthink it. You don't have to sit around and try to come up with a certain riff or lyric. You might play/sing your new song's opening riff/lyrics just by "noodling around."

6, listen to your influences. It helps a lot!
7, lastly, have fun. If you're enjoying making music, everything comes out more natural instead of forced.

Though I have never dabbled in Metal, i have created experimental music (mainly revolving around the industrial genre) and the main thing i can tell you is that originality means everything. Don't mimic every other band, change things up and don't be afraid to try something unusual or something that some people might not like.

Know how to read music, and make sure the guitarists don't play the same four chords for every tune like this guy (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gbqm5-aeoAY). My friend does that while thinking he's some kind of guitar legend, and it makes me want to throw up. He doesn't seem to know that epic pieces like this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NTqZ347TKY), this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Py6U3XMy-AM&spfreload=10), and this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWPji0txVBg&spfreload=10) couldn't exist if the artists stuck to a cookie-cutter pattern of music.

We're very well aware ( through we will have to have some sort of paddern throughout each song for the Rhythm guitar. Because, that's one of the roles of Rhythm. And well, you're naming off alot of acoustic pieces. We're sticking to electric guitars for stringed instruments, and there is a chance we won't have someone playing bass but a second rhythm. But besides that unsure stuff, I understand how people think they're good if they just stick to the same thing over and over again. I try to diversify myself as much as I can, and I've played all the way from techno, to heavy metal, to blues and acoustic styles of playing. Getting a taste of alot of the variety the sound of a guitar can pack with a EFX really helps. I'm not saying I know everything about it either, Im just doing my best to always change it up and try new things with it.

I'm totally interested in seeing how this turns out. I'm in a couple metal bands myself, currently working out a couple kinks involving drummers and stuff.

I'd give advice, but everyone else seems to have already cleared up anything I can think of off of the top of my head.

Be sure to post updates here as they come, I definitely want to see you guys play/practice  :)

Even though it has already been said, I would also recommend practice.  You can only find your own sound if you play so the more you play, the better you will get, the better you get, the more in tune the band will be to what you want your voice to sound like.

I know it's not a metal band but a band that I have followed almost since their first album is Linkin Park.  They definitely had a style for their first Album Hybrid Theory but as you work through each album you can hear some subtle, or not so subtle, changes in the style of music.  I really appreciate that they aren't afraid to put out what they want and if your band can do the same thing then major props to you all.

We're going to have 2 Electric guitars, a Peavy EXP Limited and Ibanez i dont know the exacts for him. For the Bass, it's probably going to be Ibanez too I dont know specifics there either.
We practice a shitton, whenever there's free time, we practice.
How we record audio? We can plug in our guitars to a computer and record that. We have a M13 Stompbox for our effects right now. For the specifics EFX that will take a millian years to explain.
The Drums and vocals are recorded through a mic! We download and compile and stuff through Audacity. No songs have been recorded yet, but the structure has been.
