It is beyond me why people engage in small talk. If the purpose of communication is to transfer information, what purpose does small talk serve? Just refrain from speaking if nothing substantial is to be said.

If you plan on talking, make sure your words are worthwhile. That is my opinion of the whole thing. I constantly ask questions as a result since I enjoy new information about people, although it may seem a bit... much... sometimes.

To me, it's just a way to just enjoy the company of a friend without having to make it a big deal. It's a form of interaction that doesn't need a purpose aside from just chilling. Some people like interacting with others for the sake of their company, others just interact to get something out of them.
