Well I am brand new to the furry fandom and I need help. Is there anyone out there that will tell me common furry terms. Also I want a unique sona not one of the popular ones. If anyone could give me sona ideas it would be nice.

Anyways pick something unique like a hybrid of some sort, a fantasy creature, or for some make your own creature to be your sona but you want to choose very wisely and make it fit you. Not really sure what there is in the way of terminology for you to learn, it is pretty straight forward.
Mythology is underused, and I suggest you give that a try. The same goes for hybrids. Avian hybrids or animals with some avian traits (such as my own, even if it's just the wings) are relatively rare, and I have never seen a gryphon or reverse gryphon actually. (EDIT: We seem to have a single gryphon now.)
I have a bias towards natural or dull colors, although if you really were into atypical coloration you could go for slight highlights or even neon for all I know.
Some people have shapeshifters even. In the end, it is whatever you feel best with. Something that might symbolize you, or even contradict your image of yourself. It sounds odd, but it is effective.
I swear we have enough wolves and foxes to start an army ten times over.

On top of using simple programs to customize an existing template of a fursona, some artist are willing to draw them from scratch, either free or for a price. However, finding somone willing to do this kind of art for free takes a lot of looking, and don't always expect to get what you want without a really accurate description.

And like Hollow said, give certain creatures or animals thoughts. When you've found the right fursona, it just clicks and locks in place. It's a real satisfactory feeling. And ill tell you, it took a few month to figure out my main sona.
But anyway. You're really gonna like your stay here. I'm sure. And if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Hello there. My fursona came to be as a result of a character writing exercise and she just clicked for me. I will say that I am a little bit hipster though in that I didn't want something everybody else had, so perhaps we have something in common there.

Hello. I may be a Fox like many but I stand apart due to my ability such I part shadow and I use my bone from my own body as a weapon. Beside finding your fur person. It also help if ya figure out what your fur can do different. Such as I think there is one other shadow like fur here but he used his different then mine. Otherwise everyone above me explain it much much better then me.
