This is something I'd like help with... sooner than later. I really want to be more involved in this community, but most of the art/costumes/whatever cause me legit mental/physical pain or scare me. It's a barrier from happiness.
-
Well... that is an interesting predicament. Does the concept relating to art and fursuits disturb you? Is it perceived as a rational or irrational fear?
-
100% Irrational, definitely. And no, I don't have any trouble relating to it.
-
Well, I cannot really say what the cause is. Maybe some underlying confliction about seeing humanoids with animalistic qualities? Something inprinted on you by past experiences or by family members? Maybe it stretches into your own "uncanny valley"?
-
Yeah, I think it's just uncanny valley.
As for the pain, it seems like it was a one-time occurence. It seems to be something that's possible to get used to, as I'm watching some furry thing right now.
-
Well, if it's uncanny valley related, a perceived pain might be normal for some people. Kind of in the same way that something is so cringeworthy that it hurts.

Becoming a furry is a slow ease into the community. Despite being one for nearly a year now, I still can't stand the thought of wearing a fursuit, despite being ok with others wearing one as well. Just slowly expose yourself to furry things, at your own pace, and your mind will (hopefully) adjust to the new concept.
If it's a genuine fear of yours, it can be resolved in a similar way. People are less afraid of something the more it happens (unless it's caused trauma of some kind).

I would just like to point out that you don't have to like or accept the fursuiting or even the artistic aspects at all if you don't want.
The fandom is about acceptance in the diversity of it's members, not the conformity of HAVING to like the art or HAVING to own a fursuit.
Fursuiting and Drawing are both just hobbies that members of the fandom just happen to prominently take part of.
No one is forcing you to like things here and you can be just as big a part of the fandom as someone with a million art commissions and 10 fursuits as someone who has a human as their fursona :P
-
Then dont be a furry. Simple. Why would you want to be something you dont like?
-
But I do like it. On different levels.
Except that this doesn't affect me anymore, fursuits are amazing.
Also, I'm Jiub from YouTube :)
