Guys, I am majorly confused right now. My cousin, who just two years ago told everyone in the family that she wants to be called either Gabriella or Ella instead of Gabby, just now dropped the genderfluid bomb on me when I asked why she had changed her name to Andy on Facebook. Now, I have absolutely nothing against genderfluids nor am I saying that she HAS to identify as the female Ella, but I've known her not as genderfluid for her entire 14 year life. I'm just so confused right now. What am I supposed to think? What am I supposed to say?

You may want to accept your cousin's decision to change her name. As for the confusion, you just need to know that the teenage years are when identity usually comes into question. I'm still dealing with it myself.

I'll accept it in time, but it's just sudden, you know?

I understand. High school years are when everyone tries something new for themselves.

Don't ask other people what you should think... Either you're cool with it or you're not. And you have the freedom to be okay with it or not, but it would be better for close family to be accepting as they aren't people who can be avoided easily. He/she can't just walk away from family at that age which makes him/her vulnerable to psychological harm if family is not accepting. I don't understand why it even warrants posting on here... Just say "okay" and go along with it. Who cares? Like what else would you expect people here to tell you - "tell her she's wrong and stupid!!" ?

Maybe it is just a phase. Maybe it is not. Either way, you don't have to agree with her views. Just accept whatever it is that she prefers to identify as.
I consider genderfluidity as odd, but honestly, if someone told me about it, I would not really care enough to change how I look at them.
If she seems to be pushing the subject down everybody's throats, she is probably doing it more for attention than anything else.

l have to agree with HoH, it's not something you should worry about.
