So i have been feeling that i should build my own gaming rig but I'm not sure where to start. Does anyone know of a few good sites to get a novice started?
-
If you're in the US, go with Newegg or Tiger Direct.
I personally don't like the websites that will "build it for you" just because those can be a bit over priced and filled with shoveware, but if that's what you're looking for I can't really give any recommendations .
If you really wanted to Yolo it you could use Ebay, but that's a crap shoot most of the time.
-
I said build it myself. Like literally.
-
Whats your price range / what will you use it for?
I'll build you a parts list if you want me to
-
Price range?
Any priorities?
-
Well i did say a gaming rig. And currently about 2000 is the highest i will go.
-
$2,000 in CAD?
I'll create a parts list for you to look over, if you want anything in particular, give me a shout
-
Yeah Canadian. Thanks zarconite! ^_^
-
Alright, I've built a parts list for you:
http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/BJ7rBm (http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/BJ7rBm)
It includes:
I7 4790k (overclockable) CPU,
16GB 1600mhz ddr3 ram,
Corsair H80i hydro cooling,
250GB Samsung EVO 850 SSD,
2TB Western Digital caviar black HDD,
GTX 980 Asus STRIX (4GB) GPU
if you want anything changed, feel free to ask
-
I'm actually pretty cool with that. What would be the difference if i had a blu-ray disk drive instead? I can go a little over if i want to.
-
I've updated it, it totals to $2,030

-
That's very nice. To be honest I didn't expect a reply with a parts list right away. I won't be able to make the purchase right away because I need to sort out pay pal so i can even buy it. But i will bookmark the link for now.
Now second order of business. How would i go about building it?
-
there are plenty of good guides on youtube, if you're looking to install something in particular, just search for it
You should be fine to follow a universal guide on youtube for most of your parts, the only one you may need a separate search for would be the CPU cooler
-
Alright! Thanks for all the help in advance. I'll be sure to post a picture of it once it's all together! X3 so excited!
-
Good luck! :D
-
good luck and yea some of us are great with parts lists im a bit rusty at them still since i havent done one for a few years but i can do them with a little help
i have no issues with the list you where given
if you overclock your gpu and cpu do know that temps will rise for both and if you dont be careful and get a unstable overclock your cpu and gpu will go downhill and die faster
-
Yeah i know. I know specs and stuff bit i don't know how to build a PC and where to get the parts for a decent price.
-
there are guides online
2 people i will show you to are
linus tech tips playlist on pc builds https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL8mG-RkN2uTwlcLU_rv29Gt4578XfgJm_ (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL8mG-RkN2uTwlcLU_rv29Gt4578XfgJm_)
and jayztwocents his multiple playlists of tech and pc knowlage https://www.youtube.com/user/Jayztwocents/playlists (https://www.youtube.com/user/Jayztwocents/playlists)
tbh ive lernt more about computers from them both with in only a year
-
Yeah I already have been looking up a bit after Zarconite mentioned to YouTube it. So far it seems pretty simple.
-
far from simple people make it look easy in video but there's tons to it
not wanting to scare you but if you build on a carpet touch the case alot because we buld up static and that can kill a pc part i do it out of habit when just walking past mine
-
I know about the static. And i know the very basics of electronics. I have messed around with circuitry before making little gizmos that do misalanious things, pre-packed most of the time. But nonetheless the basic rules still apply. Either way i don't want to get the parts caught in the carpet so why would i put them there.
-
As far as cooling goes, you should be fine with what you have
but if you need any extra fans, I would get another 120mm red LED fan for the front (that matches your current one) and an extra 120mm non led fan
With your current setup, your case comes with 2 fans, one for the front as an intake, one for the rear as an exhaust
however, with your cpu cooler, the rear fan will have to me moved as thats where the the radiator will be installed
I would recommend installing the rear case fan on the bottom of the case as an intake (to blow air onto your GPU)
As far as building it goes, as long as you use common sense and make sure to do your research (such as ensuring you have an antistatic band), you should be fine
-
(such as ensuring you have an antistatic band)
I don't see the point in these.
I've played around with the internals of sooo many computers (and even while they're on) without any negative effects.

Admittedly, you can get away with not using one, but if you have a lot of static electricity on you and you touch a few contacts then you could cause damage to fragile parts (such as ram, or your cpu etc)
It's better to be safe than sorry
-
I guess I'll touch a metal door knob for extra precautions. XD

I'd say screw the 4790k and save $100 by going with the i5 4690k instead, unless you do CPU-intensive things like video editing you will not notice any difference at all. The 4790k is indeed a better CPU but it's designed for more intensive multi-threaded workloads rather than gaming, thus the difference for gaming is negligible.
Also you can wait a month or so more until' the newer model is released (since it's currently around that time of the year when Intel releases new models). And even if you're not buying the new one you'll sure get a better price on the current models once the new ones are out.
Another thing, 16GB of RAM is overkill. You'll be hard pressed to find a game that will use even just 8GB, so just get 8GB instead of 16GB and save a few more $ without reducing performance! See, how RAM works more does not actually increase performance (nor does less RAM decrease performance). The performance will be exactly the same regardless how much or little RAM you have so long the actual RAM usage is less than 90-100% (If you're curious, you can monitor the RAM usage in the task manager).
Also, why Windows 7 when you can have Windows 8 for a few $ less? (Also Windows 10 will be out by the end of this month!)

I agree, all you need to do is touch something metal and stay clear of soft mats and socks and you'll be fine. Make sure to use a clean table, preferably a wooden or plastic one, when building the PC to prevent the components from touching the floor!
-
I totally missed the RAM! Thanks for pointing that out. As for 4790K i do plan on staying a let's play channel so I'm ok with that.
-
Pretty much everything Timmy said is useful and correct, but I must say Windows 8 is not worth the discount. Windows 7 is a lot more user-friendly and functional, not to mention has better compatibility with most software in my experience. 8 is a pain to work with and tends to cause issues you wouldn't get with other 0S's. Save yourself the hassle and go 7.
-
it's ok i know the struggle i have a laptop (and it's pretty good for what it is.) and it has windows 8 on it. i can can say for a fact that it's definitely hurting my performance a bit.
-
Just a reminder: remember to have greatly overclocked GPU (GRAM isn't that important), to use it to mine Bitcoins
-
i'm not to worried about bitcoins. just gaming and some future video editing is all i have planned for the machine.
-

bitcoin mining on a gpu is going out and he stated he isnt doing it
ill start a thread on bitcoin mining later or just go find some videows about it and the asic hardware
ive can say that it should be allright mine is nothing great but hey its my computer and thats what i like about it i do what i like you do what you like
touch the case is handy as heck dont touch the psu after its connected to pc parts tho

I just do everything on my floor, has worked perfectly fine so far :p
Unless you've got carpet or something, I don't see why touching the floor would be such a big deal.

I cannot stand using Windows 7 anymore, everything about Windows 8 is better. And Windows 10 is coming out in just a few months anyway.

Tbh, the whole reason I added the I7 / 16gb of ram is just for future proofing, you never really know what is going to come out in the future or what tasks the user is going to do with said computer, admittedly you should be fine with 8gb of ram though
((Side note, Modded minecraft can use over 8gb of ram, I've had it do that in the past for me >.>))

it can but you can limit it aswell if you use something like feed the beast or technic launchers
-
Hmmm. I guess I'll think about it. Because i like to mod my games too and games are staring to get pretty... well... pretty.

But it feels like you're trying to fiddle with an ipad when you use it. D:

That too.
-
Operating system is just user preference, I prefer windows 7 personally but I know people also like windows 8.1
Feel free to choose which suits you best ^_^

I'd still say the 4790K is a bit overkill, for just general lets plays and gaming videos you might see a difference of videos being processed maybe 10 seconds faster or so, hardly a difference.
I personally use Windows 8 and prefer it quite a bit, it's got a lot better support for things and has a lot of under-the-hood improvements over Windows 7 meaning that RAM usage will be much lower and it'll boot a bit faster (even with an SSD) for example. You can say what you want about the interface but it's really as simple as just installing a simple program and it'll look just like Window 7 yet you still get all the benefits and improvements of Windows 8.
Personally, after a bit of tinkering and organizing, I ended up preferring the Windows 8 interface over the Windows 7 start menu! The trick here is not to view (and use it) as a huge ipad-like grid of icons but rather treat it the same way you would the good ol' start menu - Just that it's bigger!
Here's a screenshot how it looks for me, notice that it's quite nice and tidy compared to what you may be used to seeing.

Guys i know Which one i'm going for don't worry.
