Title: What would happen if there was another intellegent species?
Post by: Akyra on June 14, 2015, 04:28:05 AM
A species of animals with similar technology levels to humans. Would we be at war? Would there be racism between the two species? Would they even interact or go their own way? It would be pretty fricking cool if there was another highly intellegent species. Humans would be less...alone. But seriously consider there was another species with intellegence similar to humans. Post what you would do or what you think would happen in the comments.

Racism. Racism everywhere. Also a lot more demand for tailors altering clothes to fit a varied anatomy. Schools would have to be more accomodating to various species, and pretty much everything relating to public facilities would have to follow suit. "Human rights" would have to be adjusted to encompass all sentient species. Religious protests against another species competing with humans for intelligence or general prowess.

Or it could be exactly like the X-Men movies. Except instead of mutants it would br nonhuman sentients.

i recon that it would be similar for them as it was for blacks in america during pre 1954
i wouldn't treat them like that thou id think it would be pretty cool
but we think we know what our ancient ancestors did with neanderthal kill them all
so it has hep pend

Neanderthals are humans though...

We did kill them off though. Intentionally or not, they died, we lived.

Hopefully modern morals would prevent a reoccurring theme.

i agree completely
and neanderthal aren't humans we are homosapien they are neanderthal although our genetic material was similar because the could interbreed and have offspring

I reckon there would be a war. We would try to make peace, but honestly, that probably wouldn't work, unless like humans get one half of the planet, and the aliens get the other. Either way, there will be casualties to be had.

But, if we were coexisting, i think the more western nations would be very accepting of them. I mean, look at all the *shudders* SJW's we have. There would be most definitely a few people who aren't accepting of them, but those people will very likely be quashed by the government.

That leaves nothing to say about the more eastern nations, however. (Russia, Afghanistan, etc)

What if they were more technologically advanced than us?

it depends if they are capable of reasoning we would probably make a trade use of earth for their technology or abuse of earth but they teach us all they know but transportation for every person to an equally habitable planet or a massive war

To be honest, I always thought about slavering us under a threat of taking down our planet.

what we could do is try to terraform mars which is theoretically posserbl and would only take about 50 years

The earth is screwed with humans on it...

The earth is screwed with humans on it...

Well as long as people have their own conflicting personal needs, opinions and ideas, there will never be large-scale peace.

which, is nigh impossible, without brainwashing everyone.

It depends on when this other intelligent species developed it's intelligence and assuming you mean as intelligent as us.
Before us - humans don't exist or are enslaved
Just after us - they don't exist or are enslaved (Neanderthals)
Anywhere after civilisation is developed - breeding is promoted for pets and servants
Modern times - Heavily studied and allowed to develop apart from humans in conservational enclosures

this could be true if we didn't care but we do and we are getting better at what we do ok for a long time id say that we whir most like viruses but id say we are becoming more mutualistic in terms of our relation with earth

There's two possible outcomes when humans are involved:

1) James Cameran's Avatar

2) War of the Worlds

Honestly, i'm rooting for the latter.

sorry can i just elaborate when i say 50 years i mean get the atmosphere as thick as earths not to have the oxygen or magnetosphere that will take a lot longer :)
and those are 2 likely options :D

The two arguments i hear from speculating astronomers and astrophysicists and theoretical phys. are that either a) Such an intelligent species (probably more intelligent than us assuming they come to us first), would be wise enough to understand how precious life is an would have no intentions of causing harm. They likely would not need any of our resources since they are abundant throughout the universe. My personal spin is that if they were going to kill themselves with war (like we are definitely going to), then they would have done it already and thus we would not be meeting them.

The other speculation i hear is that we will be so insignificant to the other race that they would pretty much either conpletely ignore us, or would have no problem just kicking our ant hill over for fun. I think we are classified as a type 0 species, and a species that can travel between stars and harness the power of the galaxy would be type 3. We would likely encounter a type 3. Is a type 3 going to care about type 0?
...i would say maybe; it depends on how abundant life is in the universe. If we find bacteria on Europa, it's not like we're gonna say "UGH, germs!!! What a waste of time!" *busts out the purell*

...no! If we find bacteria, it's going to rock our socks off. Even though our relationship to bacteria is likely proportional to a type 0 and type 3 civilization.

So my verdict is, yes, it would probably be a friendly encounter. Just remember - if a civilization is so advanced that they can travel between stars in the first place, they PROBABLY got their s#*t together reeeeeal good lol. There would be lots of order in their civilization. They probably wouldn't be a bunch of rogue barbarians. And even if they were, we don't have anything that they would want anyway. If they come to our planet, it would probably be for the purpose of discovering life. They would probably have experts who know exactly where to look. Even we are starting to identify potential life-harbouring extrasolar planets, and we have only recently left our own solar system for the first time.

So how would HUMANS react to this? We would probably either kill ourselves or try to kill them (and then be killed by them in response), because we are a bunch of monkies.

Another thing to keep in mind is that up to this point, Earth-based life is ALL we know. That means if we ever did encounter ET life, we may not recognize it as life, and that's something we have to be aware of and anticipate. Life elsewhere could be based off of COMPLETELY different principles. They might not be carbon-based. Just here in Earth, we see creatures that look alien to us. Imagine a species that evolved separate from the very beginning. What if it doesn't even meet our current definition of life? Would we be flexible with that? If they are not "living" by our definition, does that make it okay to enslave them? I can see how it might get complicated when it does happen.

I think District 9 is another interesting outcome.
