Not being insane XP
Ok, seriously? being able to believe your eyes and ears, and knowing that what your seeing and hearing is on some level real.

I would agree with angder
There's societys version of sane but is it anymore sane to believe in an old guy with a beard sitting on a cloud playing a harp than it is to believe in say parnormal worlds

You can be totally sane and eat your own kind. Healthy, probably not, respected, probably not, but sane? Yes. If you're starving to death and your friend dies...
Anyway, I'd classify sanity as how well you control your own actions. You may not necessarily do the right thing, but you can be totally deliberate about doing it. You can be a good, insane person, or a bad, sane one, and vice versa.

While most of definition of "sane" is actually defined by the society, I'd be thinking that "sane" is generally
A. being able to think rationally (like remember correctly, make connections correctly) and B. Able to correctly control your movements with your mind.

Well defining sanity is a bit difficult, what's easier is defining insanity and having sane people be "those who are not insane".
So let us define insanity. First of all, insanity is a social construct and thus is subjected to social beliefs, this means our definition must be relative (IE: Based on other people, rather than a full enclosed definition). This means that if we wanted to get the most general and rigorous definition of insanity that would apply to all societies, then the textbook definition of insanity in the DSM-V won't be suitable.
So an insane person is someone who believes significantly different things to the normal populace, here normal = majority opinion. But it's important to note that not all people who do not agree with the normal populace are insane, in fact a majority aren't. Also different "beliefs" have different weighting, so here is what I would say is the criteria for being insane, as general as possible.
You are insane if:
1. You frequently hear, see, feel, taste or smell something that a great majority of people in the area can't sense that is not explainable by a physical alteration.
2. You have an obsessive belief that is shared by a minority of people that you refuse to disbelieve even if others propose logical contradictions (that a majority of people find valid) within your belief, such as circular logic or paradoxes.
Here insanity is a purely social thing, so depending on the set of reference frames you choose (IE: The society you decide to be in) your status of insanity and sanity may change. If you tick any of the 2 conditions you are insane within that given reference set, if you don't tick any of the conditions you are sane.

i hate to quote a film but in this case i think its relevant "what the eyes see and the ears hear the mind belies "
i say this because it is this fact that can drive people to insanity
the Dictionary definition is "in a state of mind which prevents normal perception, behavior or social interaction ; seriously mentally ill"
i agree with this definition but all of thees symptoms would have to be really extreme
also some people are not mentally ill but they think they are and when they start to think this they get it into their head when originally their was nothing wrong with them now their is because of this state of mind

The way I see it there is no such thing as "Completely sane". If there was such a thing it would be a ignorant mind that has never pondered about the harshness and brutality of the world. Mainly an mind untainted by negative thoughts, from my sight on this, everyone that has just seen this questioned them selves and lost the state of "Completely sanity" if it ever existed because you questioned the though of "Completely sanity" even existing.

But in any case you where forced to eat your friends flesh, either you liked it or not. You just lost sanity.

you know we have more words for bad things than we do for good things 7
just a little fact :D

I guess there is more ways to do evil and is more undesired. I've seen a social test where a man wore a sign that said "Kill homeless to get rid of homeless people" He was attack verb wise and physically. He then wore a sign that said "Give homeless homes to help the homeless." No one would pay attention to him. He was completely ignored by everyone.
It showed the BAD DEEDS get MORE ATTENTION
Than
GOOD DEEDS

i didn't think of that
and i suppose now i think about it its true

My definition is rather simplistic, and hinges a bit on pragmatism.
Any sane being is one that can use the input they receive from reality to make decisions that lead to positive outcomes for said being. Thus, an insane being is one that lacks this skill. ^^
