Title: What made you choose your fursona's species?
Post by: Poli "Lissy" Drax on April 22, 2015, 12:12:25 PM
When creating a fursona, one of the first and most important things we decide is what species they will be. It'll affect their overall appearance, their markings, and a great deal about them, so choosing sometimes takes a great deal of thought. At least, it did for me. Their are a variety of reasons as to why you'd choose a specific species or a cross of them for your fursona to be, but why did you choose yours?

Was it your favourite animal? Perhaps it matches how you feel? Perhaps you simply like how it looks?

What made you choose the species you did for your character?

I started out as a wolf partially because of Sonata Arctica, and for reasons quite similar to the stereotypical wolf (Along the lines of "Noone understands me I's such a lonely person bawww Wolves are the crowning achievement of creation but noone understands them either bawww Such majestic. Very howl at the fullmoon baww". Worth noting is that this was quite a few years ago and I was 12-13 at the time. I'm 20 now.), but as I grew older I started to feel like that whole thing was just silly and that I didn't want my fursona to be based on random made-up stuff about a real (and quite overrated) animal.
So I took my favorite wolf story/RP character, took away all of her old personality, changed her design a bit and made her fit me more closely by adding some feline traits to her behaviour. The result is a creature that looks like a wolf/dog/whatever but acts more like some kind of cat.

I suppose she could be a dog or even a fox now, but I wanted to keep some kind of connection to her roots and decided to call her a woof, after what some like to call stereotypical (sparkle) wolf characters on dA.

tl;dr: Used to be a wolfaboo, grew up a tiny bit, changed the one character that eventually would end up becoming my fursona, decided to call her a woof.

.....It was my skin in Monecraft and everyone referred to me as the deer... :S

Hah, I suppose that is a good reason~

I actually had a similar thing for one of my old sonas. Nothing wrong with foxes or wolves, but we do often choose them to be all edgy and stuff when we're younger, only to regret that when older. I know I did, so I ditched the design and started fresh with Poli. Good to see I'm not the only one. Woofs are lovely :3

The movie that pretty much defined who I am as a fur and as a person in general was Balto (Original). Came out the year after I was born and as a little kid I absolutely fell in love with it. So that probably explains it haha.

Although recently, I've gained slight interest in the Avian variety, but still identify only as a canine.

"Wolfaboo" XD XD XD XD XD!!!

I chose a fox not because of the animal, more because I imagined "in an anthropomorphic society, what animals would have what characteristics" and in my personal imagination I always saw foxes as sort of feeble and not very sociable, which at the time described me pretty well so I chose a fox.

After about 2 years I realized that the fox thing was good, but I didn't really identify as a fox anymore, my favourite animal has always been the tiger so I made a tiger sona as well XD I swap the sonas once and a while, I prefer the look of my fox fursona so I'll often use it in images.

Well, to start it off, the german shepherd is a commonly used dog for military and police applications, and as many people that know me know, I'm into that kinda stuff.
Plus, they're strong, big, and natural leaders. all of which I see myself as (or rather, want to be).
but... I read the book "Cracker! The Best dog in Vietnam" when I was quite young, it was about a german shepherd search dog and her handler in vietnam. I just really liked how the author wrote the point of view of the sheppie xp

I got started into actually forming a fursona about three months ago, when I started considering what would work best as a representation of myself.

Having read webcomics related to mythological creatures and their attempts at normality in the modern world, I decided on mythology as a good base to start with. I eventually chose a winged lion, as it is a heraldic creature which has graced countless banners and coat-of-arms across Europe for centuries. Just like the comic I read, in which so many mythological creatures tried to get past the stereotypes of their species (Sphinxes worried of looking cumbersome when they are a royalty species, bandersnatches and jubjub birds from Wonderland trying to act civil), I decided that I am not a hunter, not dominating, and not a master of anything really. Qualities which might be suggested of a species as mighty as a lion.

Rather, I am just a normal person, trying to meet the expectations many people have of me.
The medallion my fursona wears is from the comic as well, allowing the illusion of humanity, which is related to my own attempts at casting an illusion of fitting in. When normality is not a necessity, then the illusion can give way just a bit more.
And aren't we all just trying to fit in at one point or another? To look like everyone else?
Sooner or later, it is necessary to discard the illusion, and reveal who we really are.

I find that no matter what illusions we may cast to fit in, they can only go Skin Deep.

Well I chose the species of my fursona to be a cat, siamese specifically. It all started when...*deep subtext and backstory*blah blah blah... Something about being in a fight to the death against a cat army... Randomness. The end.
*whisper*To be honest I was just eating fish and saw a siamese cat walking outside my house and referred to that as a reference in picking my species...

I'm pretty surprised at the genuine diversity of reasons here. Some take deep thought, others were just a spontaneous decision. Both are awesome.

Poli came from some rather serious planning and thought about my personality and traits. I wanted to make a hybrid that followed my main traits, so I chose a badger for my temper, and occasional fluffiness, and the dragon side to demonstrate my like for collecting and hoarding. I love both species loads, and I hadn't seen many around of that kind, so I just.. Rolled with it. And it came out fantastic.

I choose my fursona's animal though feeling.
I had a feeling I could relate to a falcon and so I did a load of research to learn more about what they represent and what they are in nature and. From that I made the decision that my fursona would be a falcon.

The peregrine falcon can be found almost anywhere in the world. They are used for hunting and falconry is historically a sport of kings.
Falcons have incredible vision  and are the fastest living thing on earth, able to reach dives of over 400km/h.
They represent freedom, aspiration, determination, prophecy, power, superiority and focus.

The look was also mostly feeling and trying different things. For example: he was originally going to be blue as opposed to brown.
The naming also takes a lot of thought.
Perry Walker
Perry being short for peregrine
Walker being a Scottish surname and having relation to traveling while being ironic to a falcon's obvious ability to fly.

Hello. cx The reason I chose for my fursona to be a wolf, was because I feel.. Um.. cx Well, I feel like one. I'm not exactly sure how to describe it, but I feel more animalistic..
[Shrugs]
I've studied the canine species, and I just feel like them. (Hooray! I feel like everyone's going to flame me.  x_x )

I choose to be a bat due to the fact I always found hurt or injured bats around my home. So I would take them in feed them and help fix whatever they had broken. Or cure they're illness. I just grew so fond of them...

Pff, no-one's gonna flame you here pal. It's quite normal to feel that way. Heck, you might be venturing a little into Therian territory with that. But we're all in the same boat here.

Because I always saw myself as a wolf. Recently, at least.

I had problems with deciding, so I made a hybrid.
Cat, because they are free and independent and wolf, because they are strong.
But I chosen it myself

I liked the idea of a "lone wolf" because I was able to relate and I always liked wolves. The hybrid idea came because I loved fox furs and I'd watched cartoon foxes since I was younger.

My fursona has done a lot of changing since it was first formed. Initially, it was a reptile (and occasionally, you'll see me sporting reptiles for that reason), but now that I've grown and recovered, I picked something more common place.

I've grown very partial to canines, but I don't find myself identifying as anything 'wild' mostly because I tend to like the aesthetic of the domestic dogs better. So anyway, onto the meat, I picked a bull terrier because they are very much like me in personality and appearance.

Personality wise, they're independent and stubborn, usually not good for first time or inexperienced dog owners for that reason; if they tag you as someone beneath them, they're likely to do their own thing and ignore you. They're intelligent, having to be stimulated both physically and mentally less they become neurotic or destructive. Clownish and rowdy. They talk to themselves when they are bored. They are predisposed to having neurotic tendencies, including scratching and chewing. They can also be guilty of shadow chasing, or seeing things (which I sometimes deal with), and can look imposing despite being enormous dorks. In all they're pretty much a handful, but need consistency and for people to remind them (kindly) that rules exist. Literally all of this applies to me as well.

Physically speaking, I keep my hair short, and bullies have short coats. We're both thick and are easily prone to sunburn. And of course, we're both handsome, so no skimping out on that. Specifically with my fursona, I have the fawn coat to match my dirty blonde hair.

Well, Armonia was not my first fursona. It was actually a navy and silver falcon I called Decibel because for some reason I wanted her mute. Eventually she changed into a Ratatta I named Delilah for playing Pokemon… I know, I'm lame. Then came a bright green swift fox named Silver Mist, where she was green and orange and blue. But eventually I came to conclusion of a fox with antlers, then added hooves, digi legs. I came to the conclusion Armonia would stay with me.

Three different reasons of her.
1. Little did I know when I named her, Armonia's name means "Harmony" in Italian. It was such a surprise that something so simple impacted me because my life revolves around music. And my religion.
2. The deer - the more I learned about deer, I realized it was most likely my spirit animal, as they are independent and caring. I show these characteristics more than the fox.
3. The fox - well, they're cunning and fun and mysterious?? Idk

The more I thought about my fursona, the more I realized my parents were the two animals. My mother being the deer, my father being the fox. If you want to know more about it, pm me.
