Title: Controller vs Mouse and Keyboard
Post by: MrRazot on January 06, 2015, 11:16:40 AM
Thoughts and opinions?
How do controllers compare?
WiiU vs Xbox vs ps4 vs Steam controllers?

I personally think some games just need a controller, but I'll use a keyboard where I can down to how precise it is for RTS, FPS, etc. I hate Auto Aim when it comes to controllers.

I prefer controllers and use one whenever it's possible even tho it sometimes requires a bit more work.

These days I can't understand how I survived playing Skyrim with the keyboard and mouse, tho I guess that's partially because of how the game itself is made.. xP

I think it's easier to play with a controller since I feel like it makes it easier to get things more precise when walking or aiming.
And that it's more comfortable since I can move my arms and hands around more freely.

I think you can get more precise with the walking maybe, but aiming? I dare you guys to turn off auto aim.
Nothing beats the precision of a mouse.

As far as FPS and RTS games go, I believe a keyboard/mouse is superior. Platforming games are better suited to joysticks, but when it comes to aiming as being a major role, the mouse is better.

Though auto aim is one of the cons when it comes to controllers, they are useful because you don't have to space your fingers out with controls. To be more specific I recommend the Xbox1 controllers because PS4 controllers are weird they space out your fingers and are awkward. Hope this helped.

I will find you, and I...will...HUG YOU!!

I personally can't stand using a controller for shooters. But platformers and certain RPGs I'll use a controller.

Controllers all. The. Way. All the buttons you need are conveniently packed into one ergonomic device. Keyboard and mouse is just sooo awkward. You got all these buttons just scattered around, ugh, makes me shudder just thinking about it. Gotta have one hand here and one hand way the *bleep* over there, it's just not good for gaming.

Explain why most professional gaming youtubers use PC then :P

but in all seriousness, PC. Usually, you just need WASD, maybe 1,2,3,etc. Which I have a mouse that has those hotkeys on it's side. precision, and I just generally prefer it, having used both. and if you say Controllers are more ergonomic, you probably haven't used some keyboards :P

Professional gaming youtubers, because I totally follow MLG. Ha! Sitting on your ass and doing nothing is a profession. And ergonomic keyboards? Yea, I suppose the next thing you're gonna tell me is a Honda Civic can outrun a Lamborghini Sesto Elemento.

I'm a keyboard and mouse guy and I'll explain why in detail

  1. Mice are more accurate than joysticks: Joysticks on most consoles don't usually offer much accuracy, they're clunky, they give resistance and they are only limited to 8 (or sometimes 16) directions. Mice on the other hand use relative position movements rather than simply joystick strain, so they're in essence omni-direction. Couple that with a much higher DPI than any joystick can offer, Mice just tend to be more accurate.
  2. Customizable Controls: Ever had a game where the control scheme was just outright silly? I've had that happen several times. With a console controller you just have to accept it and try to learn how to play the way they want you to play, with a keyboard however you're usually given the option to customize your own controls, making the game play out how you want it to play out.
  3. More buttons: This may seem like a downside, as Dubaku pointer out, more buttons just makes things confusing. While most games just use the wasd, mouse and perhaps space bar, some games NEED lots of buttons. For example, you'll probably never find a game like Arma 3 on console, because Arma 3 simply requires more buttons than the Xbox can give. It may come to a shock, but 14 buttons sometimes just doesn't cut it!
  4. Easier selection: Something that I've always found really annoying with controllers is selecting things from an inventory window, especially if going to your inventory doesn't pause the game. You can't simply SELECT the thing you want, you need to move to it using the joysticks, sometimes there's a delay, sometimes you overshoot it and while you're trying to figure out how to select your item you're already being killed by an enemy. I don't even know how console gamers could play minecraft, using a joystick to browse the inventory just seems much more difficult!
  5. Text-chatting: Don't have a Mic and you're using a console controller? Well, if you want a send a message, prepare to spend 5 minutes per 20 words just using the virtual keyboard. I always found sending xbox live messages to other players was just a total pain and sometimes I didn't message somebody cause I knew it would take too long. In comes the keyboard, where you can get a good 80 words per minute, you're able to type at your hearts content, chatting to other players in game even.

Certain games where controllers are useful are racing games, due to using a joystick rather than a button, and perhaps platforming games.
