I cannot possibly be the only fur who has a love for jazz. I prefer orchestral jazz, but that's me being biased from jazz band three years in a row...
My favorite jazz artist is Glenn Miller and His Orchestra. :* He has a lot of commonly known jazz like "In The Mood" and "Moonlight Serenade."
Also, I really like this song.

Nice song. If you like big band swing stuff you might like Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. A great modern group keeping the swing hot.
Here's a nice Latin Jazz take on Wanna Be Like You from the Jungle Book

Dat horn section! *faints*

I don't listen to jazz often... :| I couldn't name a jazz song if I tried. :S

Because I play Bari sax as my marching, concert and jazz band instrument, I can't help but say "Dat Bari though" and swoon. And it's all because a Bari sax gets those low notes and well, jazz ballads with a soloist on Bari is superb!

I love this song so very much! Features a Bari sax solo and wonderful harmonies!!
I have dreamed of playing this song, even though I'm not skilled yet. But I will work for it.
-
"The bari thought of you" XD That's awesome!
I had a friend play bari for me in a music exam covering the part a tuba was meant to play. Sounded better IMHO but it was some hellish work for the guy (normally plays tenor) his lips were literally bleeding at the end!
This is more big band fun

Bari sax and guns are in the same boat, as it slowly moves due to the weight of them. But I love playing Bari in jazz. It fits better than in concert.
A really fun song I had played in 8th grade jazz band;
"The Chicken" I can't think of who it's by at the moment but it says in the video I think.

Moni busts out the funk jazz fusion! So modern!
Duke Ellington is pretty amazing, this is one of my favourite pieces of his. There are so many interpretations but this piano solo makes me feel something special.

Hmmm. Well hello friends. If you ever get the chance, you should look up "St. Thomas" by Sonny Rollins. It's been stuck in my head all morning!
-
Yay! Jazz is alive and well!
*climbs into Moni's head to listen*

AHH!! Salutations friends! It's been too long since I've posted here. But, as first Bari in my high school jazz band, I will tell you that shall begin to do improv solos on the saxophone, which are very frightening when competing at state level. But you only get better at something if you practice!~
-
I'm not sure if this thread even…
Salutations once more! Today I went to my first high school level jazz competition and we placed first! Of course the whole band was surprised because we sounded awful, apparently not if we got first… but anyway, I figured I'd share that with anyone else who appreciates jazz like I do. :3
-
I love this thread <3
BTW Caitey, feeling lost?
Try some Metallica to help find your way!

Have to admit, my preference is more for big band and swing, but occasionally I'll find a jazzy song that I can really get behind.
Like this one! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g47cExvf2zM (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g47cExvf2zM)
So energetic that I can't help but like it.
-
Yes!! I love big band and swing!
Oh!
Now, majority of you know that I play the baritone saxophone, and maybe you didn't know that there is a song with a Bari feature. (Critical Mass - Jeff Jarvis)
Well, after our competition on Wednesday, the judges had told my band director that there should really only be one Bari playing during certain parts of the song. So, as first Bari, I get to play the feature by myself, and get to stand during my "solo" part of the song. B)
Our next competition is on Monday.

Big band music is awesome!
But how much I like the songs and how much I like the band leader aren't always in sync. Like I love Duke Ellington as a composer, but Count Basie is such a personality. Glenn Miller copped a lot of criticism for being too commercial, yet in truth he achieved the sound he wanted and was very successful, so I figure that makes him a great arranger and band leader.
What band leaders do you guys like and why?
Here's a fave Basie tune of mine btw
One O'Clock Jump - Count Basie (1943) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=08jyOwx96Ig#)
-
It's hard to explain why I like certain composers and band leaders more than others. But I really like that song you posted Trix. It's one of my favorites too!
-
The first time I was asked to play piano for a (small) big band, I really didn't know what I was doing and it wasn't great. I was used to being the bass, melody, rhythm... everything! So playing less, leaving space, listening to my band members that was all foreign to me. Let alone fragment voicings... so much to learn.
Anyway the first song we tried was this, and despite the crimes I committed against it, I still like it.

I have a particular interest in improvised jazz.
Yes, this is life. And in it I will dance till I die.
-
Ah, yes. Improv. I'm not very good at that because it isn't concrete. But, then again, that isn't something I practice every time I play jazz.
-
I love to improvise! In fact I find it hard to bother practicing something to play it the same way every time, I tend to practice familiarity with the piece and different variations. But I get bored easy so I like to mix it up!
-
I enjoy listening to solos of any type honestly. Especially Bari solos. :* Bari is the best saxophone, I have declared it so!
But tenor gives a better warmth in a solo.
-
Yeah, I have to agree. I love the sound of a bari in a band, but i love a tenor solo.
Soprano sax is an abomination :P
-
Clarinet >>> Soprano sax
Honestly, I'd be ecstatic if I had a jazz clarinet in my band. I would make sure they had everything and that I didn't cover them in my majestic bass sound.
-
Clarinets are maybe the most beautiful woodwind I think... So versatile yet each style is as great as the next
I learned Blue Moon once on clarinet
-
Salutations!
I'm unsure of if I made mention of this, but my jazz band is first in our district class of 3A!! We have a state level performance for a chance to be first in the state! How cool!
Also, I recently collected some old jazz records from the 30s and 40s. My only fault with them? I have now record player for the 80+ records I have. :'(

I was saddened to hear that trumpet player Clark Terry died in February. A true legend!
