((See OOC Companion Board to post your character sheet.)) Caspar was in the Engine Room as usual, mopping the deck clean of oil spills and general grime. He sighed, slightly annoyed about being given this menial task. He was a Naval Engineer, he knew this Ship's engine backwards and had proven himself perfectly capable, and yet he was being given jobs they'd give to a Motorman with no experience, basic maintenance and general duties no one wanted to do. He gritted his teeth and got on with his work, knowing his superiors were somewhat jealous that he got a promotion so quickly. He saw one of his colleagues snicker, yelling to him "You missed a spot, Motorman!" The young Engineer said, to which Caspar replied "**censor** do it yourself." he spat, pissed off, the combination of the hot atmosphere and fatigue making his temper more volatile than usual. Suddenly the ship rocked as a missile hit it, the force throwing Caspar into the wall, knocking him out cold. He eventually woke up, the alarms blaring, he scrambled over to the Engine, checking it was in one piece. The rest of the engine crew appeared to be either seriously hurt or dead. "**censor** hell..." He said, noticing his injured comrades, going over to a nearby computer screen that was just about functioning. What he saw scared the shit out of him. "Oh my god..." The screen had an alert, there was a picture of the reactor and a timer next to it. There were big red letters on the screen which read "Estimated time to meltdown: Three Hours, Forty-Nine Minutes and Fifty-One Seconds" He had less than four hours to try and prevent the biggest nuclear meltdown since Chernobyl.

Jesse stood beside the Chef and watched intently as the large Polar bear added several ingredients to a pot of boiling water.
"The first thing ye want to learn about cookin little bunny is flavour, food counts for nowt if it dont have flavour." The Polar bear was clearly from the West coast going by his strong Glaswegian accent which made Jesse smile since he had family from that end of the country.
"Yes Chef" Jesse replied enthusiasticly only to stop and tremble as the Polar bear turned and looked at him in a strange way. Jesse stood perfectly still but his ears fell against the back of his head as the bear approached. He extended a large paw and Jesse shut his eyes awaiting a slap or something, but nothing like that happened. Instead he felt his hair which covered the left side of his face being moved away from his left eye. When he opened both eyes he saw the Chef gently using his finger and claw to move his hair aside.
"Why do you hide yourself like that?" The bear asked
"I uhm, I'm embarrased." Jesse replied.
"You look much nicer that way, don't cover it up again when in my Galley understand?"
Jesse nodded softly only for his ears to prop back up when the Captain's voice came over the tannoy system.
<Now here this, now here this, all crews man your battle stations, this is not a drill.>
"Best get yourself off to the Medbay cotton tail." The Chef said promptly
"White tail, Chef" Jesse corrected knowing full well the Chef was just teasing.
-
Caspar got up from the floor after tripping over a piece of piping, swearing. "It's gonna take a lot more than a mop and bucket to clear this up." He laughed to himself, trying not to think about his plan, which to be honest was incredibly dangerous but was the only way of saving the lives of others. He made his way to the Medbay, he needed some iodine if he was even going to survive after his little scheme. He entered it, seeing it in a wreck, he looked over and saw Jesse, he walked over to the rabbit. "Cotton tail, do we have any iodine?" He spoke in his English accent, looking at him.
-
Hearing the captain speak nix jumped up from his one man game of cards and speed walked down the halls to his post above deck. He was 6'7" so speed walking was very quick for him. "You guys ready for a rumble?" Nix said with a smirk "heck yeah we are!" said a much more serious wolf. "Then get ready!" Nix wanted to know why he was called to position. But he knew the captain or someone of a higher rank would inform him.

Jesse made his way to the med-bay and picked up his bag when he came across Caspar, he opened his bag and had a rummage inside before he looked at Caspar properly.
"Uhm a little Iodine isn't going to fix that, here sit down quickly." He reached inside his bag and took out a bandage, some gauze, and some rubbing alcohol. He poured some of the alcohol onto some cotton wool and took Caspar by the arm to sit him down and wiped the dried blood from his arm. He then took a pair of tweezers and pulled a shard of metal from the young cat's arm.
"I warn you now Kitty this is going to sting a little bit."
He pressed the cotton wool directly onto the wound on his arm before replacing it with the gauze and wrapping the bandage around his arm.
<Attention all hands, damage crews report to engineering>
-
He hissed as the alcohol touched the wound, his fingers flexing. "I need potassium iodide tablets, I'm going to try and fix the reactor before it causes the biggest nuclear disaster since Chernobyl." He said. "You're not wearing medical gear, what do you do on this ship?" Caspar inquired quietly.
-
Jesse kept a firm but gentle grip on Caspar's arm as he treated the wound, he'd found from occasional experiance that patients had a tendency to pull away. He looked up at Caspar when he asked a question, his hair once again covering one side of his face from view.
"I'm the Chef's Steward, I double as a medic in situations like these, I think we have some of those in the cabinet, give me a moment."
He stood up and dusted himself down a little and walked over to where the doctor had left the medicine cabinet wide open and looked around for the pills. "P...p..potassium sulphate, potassium oxide. ah potassium iodide." He pocketed the pills and picked up a radiation tag and went back to his patient.
"Here, I also got you two paracetamol for the pain and I suggest you wear this, it goes from green to amber to orange to red as the radiation levels go up. If it turns black, forget about kids or even living another hour, understand?"
-
There was something about the cannon blasts that got nix energized and ready for nearly anything. He didn't like the smell of gunpowder and the stink of men's sweat but after a year around it his nose can't smell it at all. "Remember men. Load, lock, aim, fire, and repeat." "Nix! The men need you port side of the ship, I'll take this side." Commanded a captain. "Yes sir!" Nix headed that way but the above deck path was blocked by maintenance so he had to go below deck. He passed by a medical bay and saw a lot of soldiers wounded. ""I hope they don't die. The smell of death is still something I don't like."" He thought to himself. As he took a step to walk on he caught sight of a long bright eared bunny. He stopped and thought he looked familiar but was interrupted by a running crowd of men trying to fit though the hall in a hurry.
-
"And what does being a Chef's Steward entail, might I ask?" He said again, still trying to calm his nerves. He put the tag on, hoping that he would be okay. The lights suddenly began to dim. "We have to get to the reactor, and I cannot do this alone. It might kill us both, it might not, I don't know if the shielding around the fuel is cracked or not, but either way we only have about three hours to try and stop the reactor from going into meltdown." He said, knowing his chances of fixing the ship were almost I'mpossible without help.
-
"Well, I'm the one who fetches the water for the pots, chop veg or fruit, help make the breads and rolls, how about you?" He nodded and picked up a radiation tag for himself and helped Caspar to stand up.
"I have no idea what a reactor looks like, this is the first international ship I've ever served upon, most of the ships in the Scottish Navy are mostly Gas Turbines."
-
"I'm a Naval Engineer in training. I occasionally get to help fix the engine, but usually I am either mopping the deck clean of various spills and general dirt or cleaning the engine itself so it remains efficient and operational. I'll tell you what to do, but because of the time limit I need someone else to do tasks whilst I perform my own."
-
"Well if we're short on time we'd better get a move on. I'm Jesse by the way, Jesse White-tail." He smiled a little and held out his paw as he picked up his medical back.
"Lead the way."
-
"I'm Caspar Thansan." He replied, taking the rabbit's paw, taking them into the reactor, he dragged the dead scientists out of the room and began typing. "Jesse, I saw a printout off the computer next to you, read out what it says about the radiation shielding."
-
As Nikolai began unloading some cargo from his sea-knight he looks at the surrounding sailors,he is very confused by the way they look at him,Nikolai throught "Why are they looking at me like clueless dog's?...is this how american's greet people?"he sigh's and take's the cargo to the sailor's saying in his russian accent "Here is the cargo sir fresh from america..."
-
Jesse blushed a little and felt a slight shiver when Caspar took hold of his paw. He helped to remove the bodies before looking over at the computer screen.
"It says the shielding is at 76%, temperature is 150 degrees and still rising, water level is down." He looked down at his tag as it started slowly turning green.
"There must be a small leak coming from someplace." He looked around before spotting the reactor's door was open.
-
As Nikolai moves to the lower deck,he see's caspar and jesse moving the bodies, the smell of death is filling the hall way,he look's at jesse and caspar and say's "What the hell?"
-
"That's bad, we need to stop the leak, pump the reactor full of coolant and lower the control rods fully in, hopefully that will stop the plutonium from going critical. He heard Nikolai and turned to him. "These scientist's bodies need to be dumped overboard, after you do that, wash your hands very well, they are highly irradiated and are a threat to the health of the crew."
-
As Nikolai heard caspar he thought"Is this how americans honor the dead?"He drags a dead raccoon to the deck.
-
Jesse nodded, he could feel sweat running down his spine, his paws trembled as he used the various buttons. His ears perked when he heard the pumps spring into life and then watched on the monitor as the uranium rods were submerged with a loud hiss and a blast of steam.
<Warning, reactor temperature reaching dangerous levels>
Jesse looked down at his tag worriedly as the green was starting to fade out towards amber.
"Caspar, we're running out of time the radiation level is still rising, check your tag!"
-
Caspar checked, his tag was starting to turn amber as well. "Damn. We have to hurry, tell me if your hair starts falling out, or if your mouth tastes metallic."
-
If it were at all possible to be noticed under his white fur, Jesse paled at the thought of his hair falling out, he liked it the way it was.
He looked back at the consol and saw the temperature steadied for a moment and fell by a degree and then started very slowly continuing to fall.
"Ok Caspar, the water's doing the trick the temperature is coming down, but very slowly."
-
He nodded and looked. "Not fast enough. The reactor is still going to go into meltdown. I'm going to try and lower the control rods into the reactor, that should prevent it going critical." He spoke as he walked over to the control rod circuitry. A message blinked on the screen, it read: "CONTROL ROD CIRCUITRY DAMAGED. REMOTE RELEASE UNAVAILABLE." Caspar's eyes widened. "**censor**! THE CONTROL ROD CIRCUITRY IS BROKEN! I'm going to have to go and release the rods manually." He said as he opened the door to the chamber, he entered and sealed it. "Okay. Suicide Mission, but hey. Hopefully my death will be quick. Radiation sickness is a horrible way to go." He said as he climbed up towards the manual release for the control rods, knowing that this might be the last thing he does."
-
Nixon reached the other side of the boat and entered with authority. "What's the casualties on this side?" ""5 dead sir! 7 injured"" called a recruit. "Those are nice numbers, what is our situation?" Nix commanded. ""Ammunition is a little low but no signs of enemy ships."" Strongly replied the recruit. "Good, keep a good eye on the hori..." Nix was interrupted by an alarm that sound off about the reactor. *REACTOR MELTDOWN..please stay calm. The situation is under control. Will Nixon report to the bridge.* immediately Nixon shot for the bridge. "Yes captain!" ^as you are aware the boat is going into meltdown, I need to make sure that you and the rest of the officers make sure the crew don't lose hope, there is someone on it. And I know he will fix it. Now get out there!^ "sir! Yes sir!" Nixon left the bridge but he was very curios of what was going on down below.
-
Nikolai throws the last body off the ship and run's to the entrance of the lower deck,he accidentally runs into a sailor and tumble's down the stair's,he re-locate's a broken thumb and break's open a hatch, only to find it half flooded with water and two dead sailor's he yell's in a surprised tone "WHAT THE **censor**!!!!,HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?"
-
When Jesse couldnt hear Caspar talking anymore he turned around and saw that he had gone from his position at the other control panel and that the reactor door was closed. With panic he ran to the reactor door and looked up seeing Caspar's tail swishing around. "What the puff are you doing you'll get yourself killed." Jesse ran back to the control panel he was working on and searched for anything that looked like it could help. "Damn it why did I have to be a Chef's Steward and not an engineer or something, wait what's that?" He looked down at the panel where something had been flashing for quite some time but due to the heat the instruction was all but rubbed out. "Radi ent sysm...what the puff does that mean?" He sat and pondered quickly before finally deciding to go ahead and push the button hoping it would do something useful. The second he pressed it a blue light flashed turning the already red lit room purple and sounded an alarm.
<Emergency Radiation venting system activated, radiation clean up crews stand by for clean up procedures, all radation clean up crews stand by for clean up procedures.>
Inside the reactor some vents opened up and began sucking air through them taking some of the radiation with it and passing it through lead filters.
-
Nikolai hears the announcement and climbs out of the hatch,he looks at jesse until he gaze's at all the surprised sailor's he then look's back at jesse and say's "Welll comrade....that was a fine move"Nikolai nod's toward's the sailor's "Lets hope we actually have a clean up crew...we wouldn't want radiation still lingering"Nikolai then grab's a silver locket out of his pocket he look's at picture's inside it,he keep's looking at it until he put's it back in his pocket.

Haden crawls out of a damaged area. He didn't know what was happening, all he could remember is the critical statu alarm being raised, then getting hit by something. He had a sinking feeling that there was something bad happening. Not normal bad, but "Chernobyl II" bad. He gathered himself as he tried to stand in the small puddle of leaking water and debris. He was a PO1, MA. So upon seeing the large gash in his left leg, he had little idea on how to fix it beyond first aid and basic stitching. He had taken his NWU jacket off, revealing his black T-shirt and tags. He ripped a strip off and died the leg as best he could. Looking around, he seemed alone, at least now. The brig's captives and his fello MA's were dead. All he could do now was make sense of it all. He started down the hall until he reached the stairwell to reach the upper deck. When he got topside, the other sailors were dumping bodies.
"Hey! Anyone know what the hell is going on?!?"
-
Nikolai hear's the small voice yell out he scatters around to find it's source,he say in a unsure tone "Hello,is anybody there?"He walk's around confused by where the voice came from,he sniffed the air to see if anybody was still alive, but the smell of sweat, oil and death
made him gag,it was just to much smell's for his senses to take.
-
Haden maneuvers through the wreckage. "I need a corpsman, need this stitched up" Haden walks toward Dimitri. "You mind telling me what's going on?"
-
He looks at haden confused"A rouge missile hit our ship it damaged the nuclear engine and killed may passengers,my comrade's fixed it,were dumping of radiation filled bodies"He then walks to a dead jaguar and begins dragging her body.
-
"I was knocked unconscious. When I woke up, all that was left was me and my fellow MA's bodies. Do we have any Nuke Techs still alive?" I limped to the guardrail of the ship.
-
He sadly shook his head while he grabbed the dead jaguar's dogtag's "No...none of them survived"He then handed haden the dogtag's,and said in a solemn tone"We can't even give these comrade's a proper burial."
-
Caspar continued to work, more of his hair falling out as it brushed on things, his tag now orange. He finally released the first control rod, it slid down with a satisfying clunk at the bottom. "One down, One-Hundred and Forty Nine to go." He said, beginning work on the second.
-
Jesse watched Caspar on one of the reactor's monitors and bolted from his chair to the now sealed reactor door. "Caspar, you've got to get out of there, there's no time to do that many, you're already starting to suffer from radiation sickness. If you stay in there much longer we wont be able to help you. Please, come back out we can get a couple of suits and do this properly we have more time...Caspar...CASPAR.!!!"
-
Nikolai dashed down the steps and looked at jesse worried"WHAT'S WRONG COMRADE!?!"
-
"We don't have that sort of time. Just keep pumping water into the reactor, otherwise I'll be roasted." He replied, lowering the tenth rod into the reactor.
-
Jesse paced around on the spot trying to think fast but nothing was coming, he looked up to see the Russian coming towards him. "It's Caspar, he's still in there and his tag has turned to amber, he's going to be suffering from radiation sickness, if it turns red his cells will start to turn cancerous, if it turns black and it will the longer he stays in there...well. I'm pretty sure you can guess what black means, he's still got a hundred rods to go, the vents are keeping the radiation level steady but....."
-
Haden walked into the room. "He's a goner if he stays. Is he the last Tech. aboard?" Haden looked at Caspar. "Look, Caspar. The way I see it is you get out and live, or roast in radiation. We need you alive."
-
*commotion had raised on the other end of the boat, but the men that nix was with stayed strong* "I'm going below deck, make sure you guys don't freak out. Stay on point, be alert, and don't panic. I'll be back." ""Sir yes sir!"" *they all replied. Nix made his way down below and saw a crowd crowding the hallway. There was no way he was getting past so he tried his best to get there in time, and at the rate he was going it wasn't going to be soon* "come on back to your posts! Get a move on!" *Nix commanded.*
-
Jesse slipped out of the engineering room and took off back towards the medbay. He passed one of the doctors and went straight to the medicine cabinet, he rumaged through several boxes and picked up a small silver case from the bottom shelf. He stuffed the viles from the boxes into his pockets and with the silver case in paw he ran back to the engineering room. He set down the silver case and opened it up to take out a medigun. He then took the viles from his pocket and drew some of the contents of each vile into the main cartidge before fixing a needle to the tip which he then inserted into his own arm and pulled the trigger. With a quick pop and hiss from the gun it administered the medications into Jesse's arm. He then took the viles and began to reset the gun, "Ok, here goes nothing I guess. I need one of you to hit the override switch to open the door to the reactor."
-
Nikolai hesitantly hit's Override switch and say's,with a worried tone"Be careful,we wouldn't want two more dead bodies"Nikolai looks down the hallway to see if any more soldier's died,he then grab's the silver locket out of his pocket and silently stares at it.
-
Jesse smiled and placed his paws on Dimitri's shoulders giving him a little kiss on the cheek. "I'll be careful." He gave the boys in the room a quick flick of his bobtail as the door closed fast behind him. He looked around and pulled out the CBRN Mask and fixed it to his face before he headed over to where Caspar was and tapped him lightly on the shoulder.
"This has to be the oddest way to get a tan." He joked trying to make light of their desperate situation.
"I need to give you an injection, it's vitamins that combat radiation topped with a steroid so they last longer, should help you out, also got you a mask too, I'd say all together it gives us both 2 and a half hours tops. If we cant fix it the door wont open again I had to use the override to get in."
-
Haden looks nervously. "You boys okay? Chart says oxygen levels decreasing. Even if you don't die from the reactor, you'll die of asphyxiation."
-
He made a face as he was injected, the oily liquid ripping his muscle slightly. "Thank you." He said as he put the mask on. "You release the rods by pulling a lever and then pulling out a pin, I warn you, the **censor** fall fast." He said, releasing the fifty-first rod. He heard Haden speak, just. "PUMP MORE OXYGEN IN WITH THE WATER THEN!" He shouted.
-
Jesse nodded with a smile and placed a gentle paw on Caspar's shoulder before taking hold of one of the rods and pulled on the level. He felt the rod pull hard but he held on and slowly began adjusting the rod until the indicator showed that it was safe to lock it off again and moving onto the next rod. The heat between the hot water and the radiation along with being under so much pressure, Jesse could feel sweat pouring down his back and watched as the glass of his mask steamed up occasionally with each breath.
-
He continued working, wiping condensation off his visor, watching the indicator closely. Still orange, just.
-
Haden looked for the oxygen valve button but couldn't find it in the mass of similar buttons and small print. "Which one?" He looked more closely. He presses the button and the oxygen levels resume normal. "Well, chalk me up for nuclear physics."
-
"If it starts to drop again, press it." The Lion replied, exhausted. He was starting to feel really sick and dizzy, an effect of the radiation poisoning. It was so difficult to concentrate...
-
Ben was put put on the ship for some reason he didn't exactly know he thought he would be worth more on the ground with the Army but orders are orders. He was walking back from being on the top deck from the past commotion he didn't know what exactly was happening everybody seemed to be doing their own thing "This seems really unorganized" he said to himself approaching a small group outside the engine room "the hell is going on here" he asked in a commanding tone.
-
Jesse continued to look over at Caspar from time to time and when he saw him getting weary he locked off the rod he was working with and gave Caspar another shot but added in some adrenaline. "I really dont know how many of these I can give you Caspar, we're almost done though, just a few more to go and we can get that door open." He panted a little and tried to smile despite the mask .
-
"Thank you, Jesse..." He nodded weakly, he was then overcome with a wave of nausea, he took of the mask and was violently sick, it was dark red. "Shit... The radiation has affected my gastrointestinal tract... My stomach is in absolute agony..." He whispered, before chucking up again, he was boiling to the touch, his marker now red. ((Graphic, but I'm trying to keep the symptoms of Radiation Sickness realistic. That sort of shit does happen, it's a horrible way to go.))
-
Jesse heard Caspar throwing up and turned to look, with worry coursing through him he locked off the rod Caspar was fixing and despite his lack of upper body strength he scooped Caspar up and placed him down by the door. "You've done ever so well, you've saved us but now it's my turn to save you, first of all I'm going to get you out of here."
Jesse stood up and returned to the rod Caspar had been using and slowly finished it until he returned to the others, as he slowly reset each one his ears twitched to the sound of each locking stage on the door begining to open again. He hoped that he would be able to get the door open again in time, he didnt have any plans on dying here and he certainly didnt want Caspar to die either.
"Dimitri, get a decon team down here asap, as soon as this door unlocks get Caspar out of here and decontaminated and stright up to the medbay lickety split."
-
Caspar groaned as he was picked up, he felt like he'd been fired from a cannon into a bowl of jellyfish. He couldn't see very well, and he felt line head on fire. "Jesse... Please... I have to keep going... The rods..." He whispered before being overcome by a coughing fit.
-
Dimitri Yelled in a panicked tone"THE DECON'S WHERE KILLED IN THE EXPLOSION!!!"
-
Jesse cursed under his breath and looked up again. "Ok here's what you need and here's where to find it. The Decon kits are located in the room next to the medbay, the boxes are bright yellow, inside you'll find two decon suits and a decon shower, all you need to do is hook the air and water lines to any of the air and water valves in the engine room." He called out as he finished yet another rod.
"You have to hurry I've only got around five of these left."
-
Nikolai responds"Alright..."he then runs towards the medbay
-
Nix saw Nikolai running and thought he would need help. "Hey!! You need assistance?!" Nix said running just behind Nikolai.
-
Nikolai says "YES PLEASE!!!"
-
Caspar lay on the ground, fading in and out of consciousness, his vision blurry, like looking at everything through frosted glass. His breathing was strained, as if there was a weight on his lungs.
-
Jesse felt his paws becoming slippery with sweat as he panted and wrestled with the last rod, he could feel it slipping from his grip as he tried to read the gauge through blurred vision as it danced between the amber and green mark. Finally just before he thought that he wouldn't be able to take anymore the gauge settled on green and Jesse locked the rod off. He looked in the direction of the door to the reactor as there was a hissing sound followed by some loud clunking noises.
<Alert, Alert, radiation contamination in Engine Room. Decontamination and medical teams report to Engineering Immediately>
Jesse felt his knees buckle from under him and he looked up at the handles to the rod he was still holding onto before he finally lost all consciousness and blacked out.
-
Caspar heard the thump, he tried to speak. "Caspar... Get him... Out..."
