Title: can anyone help me out a bit? :3
Post by: Sly_the_Skunk on March 10, 2014, 02:40:54 AM
so.. yeah I haven't been on this site in a while but I'm coming back now 'cause I finall wanna get my fursona commisioned  by someone (hopefully on this site) only problem is I ain't too creative to come up with many good ideas and I wouldn't want the artist to end up having to do more work than neescary for me lol anyway I'm posting hopefully find some other furs who can maybe help me out a bit (really all I can come up with is a skunk plain black and white with smell lines around him not even really happy with the name I chose, (Sly)) anyway if anyone wouldn't mind helping me out a bit with finding my fursona and would love to make some friends here as well :3

And to the mods if I posted this in the wrong area I'm very very sorry I'm not so used to forums like this anymore

Hey, dude! I'm brand new to the furry fandom, but character design and animals are both things I'm very familiar with, so maybe I can help!

First off, skunks can come in more colours than black and white! And many different patterns too! They can have stripes, spots, fully blocks of white on their backs, they can have blazes on their muzzles. Personally, I like cream coloured skunks with the classic two stripe pattern! Here's some examples of skunk coloration and patterns-- http://www.skunk-info.org/colrmark/marks.htm (http://www.skunk-info.org/colrmark/marks.htm)

Though of course this is a fictional skunk, so it can be any colour you want! Hair, too-- human hair styles can add personality to an anthro character, so maybe think of hair that would match his personality? Hair colour, too; it can match their fur, or it can be any colour of the rainbow.

Scars, odd markings, piercings, all these can add flavour to your character. Clothing, too!

As for his name, does it match his personality? Names can match personality traits, or they can come from the characters culture, or they can just be a cool sound if you like. Generally, if you're not happy with a name then it'll just bug you until you change it.

Hope I helped! <3

awesome dude thanks :3 this actually kinda helps out a lot I know there're other shades of skunks but I've always liked the simple black and white smell outlines which is mostly why I just feel I'm making it too simple X3 never really even thought of hair before so thanks that should help me out too, and yeah about the name I guess I'll deffinately just have to look around a bit till I can really find something I like lol, thanks a lot this should all help out plenty :3

Also, you don't actually need a name; this is something I got stuck on, then I just started letting everyone call me whatever they're comfortable with.

Plus, who needs to be over-the-top?! You don't have to be a bright-cyan dragon with neon-green hair to be unique. You just gotta be yourself!

never really considered that to be an option before :o I guess you're right maybe I'll just get some kinda generic name still though XD and yeah I guess simple is good if that's what I like ^^

Can't help with the arting part, but for names, as a writer I can tell you there is power in names. Don't just go with something per say but you should try writing out the story of your fursona. Even if it's your own story. Just let the name come to you. To be honest I had assumed Sly was your fursona, but if not hang around talk to us as we get to know you helping will be easier too :P

Hope I helped <3

hey man, writing is an art :D I guess I should try getting some kinda story behind him, but really I'm just a simple guy all around haha maybe I'll go around a few baby name sites till I find somethin' I like and yeah Sly was my name but I really just don't like it too much  since the name doesn't really match me ><

I agree with Helios on this. If your sona has a story, write it. You don't have to have flowing, beautiful prose. You don't have to post it. But you'd be surprised what you can find out just by writing about them. Ian, an otter sona of mine, turned out to have the capacity to be cruel and snide when I started outlining a story he shows up in. Nikole, a snow leopardess, normally abrasive with the mouth of a trucker, turned out to be a psychiatric nurse-- for her little brother's sake. Sometimes even looks will come clearer when you write.

As far as names go, baby name sites work, but my personal preference is culture-specific name sites, and using translators as well. I have, among my sonas, Names of English, Swahili, Celtic(old celtic, not Irish), and Japanese origin, though that's not counting "normal" names like the two I mentioned above.
