Title: The Den
Post by: KaneQuicktail on March 07, 2014, 02:56:57 AM
A tall snow leopard stood in front of Pier 344's warehouse. The door was slightly ajar, just wide enough for a person to slip through. Leaning against the building, he reached into the pocket of his black cargo pants, and pulled out a cigar and matchbox. With a strike, he ignited a match, puffing on the cigar to get it alight. He looked up at the roof of Deck 19, cracked and leaking, with disappointment.

"You can come out, DS doesn't venture this far down the rabbit hole."

A Wolf-Fox named Murph climbs down a ladder on the side of the warehouse. After dismounting the ladder, he walks over to the snow leopard.
"Can't be too careful. Spent my days with crosshairs between my eyes for a while."
The leopard looks at him, taking a long drag from his cigar.
"I heard you're recruiting. I'm not one to brag, but I've got a steady trigger pull. You probably know that I've been supplying weapons for the cause. Well, I'm ready to fight. I wanna help."
The leopard stops and puts out the cigar.

*yawns as on top of a crate behind the two lies a smaller wolf who's eyes burn through the darkness of a flickering light* "So this is the resistance? seems kinda small if you ask me, names Mitch." *he would stand up and walk over shaking dust and soot off his tattered T-Shirt and jeans*

Nathaniel puffs out some smoke, chewing on his cheap cigar. He looks over the two recruits, sizing them up.

"Murph right? Yeah I heard about you. Every little bit gets us that closer to Deck 1. And yes, this seems small, but it's much bigger. This is just the recruiting station."

He flicked some ash on the ground and puffed on his cigar again.

"Name's Nathaniel, Nate for short. We'll get started as soon as the other recruits arrive."

He looked around watching for any others.

"Alright Nate, well are we in need of supplies of any kind?" *Would look around as well taping the crate with his left paw* "Also glad to meet you Murph."

"Don't look at me, my customers bring me surplus, I fix 'em or make new weapons, and resell." Murph said with a matter-of-fact tone.
"My only personal weapon is my knowledge on any firearm I pick up. I try to lay low. Carrying a weapon will only make DS suspicious... Although, my workshop is a hop, skip, and a jump north of here."

"well, my only real tactic is too look for any weak points, Though I've never needed to fight but I've trained using varius pipes" Mitch said as he kicked the box open packing peanuts falling out as he then proceeded to sit down and relax. "This whole place will come apart if we don't try and do something soon, i heard on the south side of town people all over have varius illnesses all of which i try to avoid."

As Mitch was talking, a frantic dog, probably a beagle, rushed to Nate.
"Nate! It's the two other recruits! They were talking about the resistance, and they we're put into custody by the DS! I'm the only one to escape!" The beagle had sat down on the ground in front of Nate in a huddled position, holding his head.
"Nate, sir, what do we do?" Murph asked.

*While the beagle talks frantically, a dark wolf emerges from the shadows wearing a black trench coat, holding a medium-sized box. He speaks in an unrefined voice* "Uh- excuse me, but is this the recruiting grounds for the Black Paws? I... I seek them"

Nate looks over the wolf.

"You've come to the right place. I'm Nate and this is Mitch and Murph."

He tapped out the cigar on a gloved hand.

"We'll wait a few more minutes for any others and then we'll get started on you guys' training."

"Th-thank you, Mister Nate. A pleasure to meet you all. I brought everyone a gift, if that's alright. I wasn't sure how open the recruitment was here, and I really wanted in, and since food is scarce down here, I managed to... scavenge these..." *I offer the box to Nate* "Some food rations. Not much, and it certainly won't do for taste, but it's enough to provide a meal or two for us all. It was either we use it, or the Den Security uses it, and they certainly don't lack for food"

Murph breaks his own concentration while he worked on schematics for a weapon.
"Speaking of training, what's that like? if you don't mind me asking. I want to get right into the fight! I wanna-!" Murph stops himself.
"Sorry, I get ahead of myself sometimes." He says looking back down at his schematics with pencil in hand, scribbling frantically.

"Eaaaasy there, we'll get started with the training now. It looks like you're all that showed up. Oh well, every able body helps."

Nate motioned for them to enter through the warehouse.

"First, lets get you all equipped. We've got uniforms, weapons, and field supplies." He pointed over at a table in the dimly lit building.

"Let's get you guys lined up after you put your uniforms on, then we'll proceed."

The uniforms were rather plain. Dark brown cargo pants, a leather backpack, and a dark brown hoodie with a black paw spray painted onto it. The weapons on the table were all side arms, there were a few revolvers, but mostly pistols.

" Hmm." Mitch paused for a moment already in his outfit. " well, ive never fired a gun before. Im used to swords or pipes, But i guess this will work." He picked up a Taurus Model 4510 .45 loading it and looking down the sights.

Murph stands staring at the weapons on the table and thinks out loud.
"Hmmmmmm, which to choose? M1911 has stopping power, but the M92 has more available surplus ammo... OH MY LORD!!!" Murph gasps as he sees a G17c. He reaches for it and inspects the weapon thoroughly.
"9mm, 17+1 capacity, trijicon night sights... I can make this baby full auto with the tools  I have at my shop!"
Murph turns around,a little embarassed, and says, "What? I know a lot about guns. I MAKE them for a living."

As Murph goes on Mitch proceeds to look around for anything he can swing around, as he does this he finds a pipe in the wall thats been rusted over at one end as rips it out of the wall leaning on it now like you would a walking stick. "You mind if i carry this out with me? If i get into any trouble it helps to knock someones lights out." He said this as he looked around making sure he was to get approval from Nate first."

*Before everyone enters the room* "I don't know my real name. I can't remember anything from more than a few years ago. I usually go by Shadis, so feel free to call me that." *He follows everyone into the room. After picking a sidearm, Shadis changes into his uniform, and then slips his trench coat on over the hoodie, and his leather back pack around his side within his trench coat.* "What shall we do?"

"Glad to hear it. Should be easy enough to remember." Mitch said leaning up against the wall. " I do say we should stay here over night, get to know each other and wait to see if anyone eles shows up." He reached into his pocket pulling out a rice ball wrapped up inside a few loose rags takeing a bite, as well as resting his hoodie down to form a makeshift pillow.

Mitch would then stand up to take a quick look outside checking to see if the others have arrived at the area letting out a small hum.

(I'm not terribly sure where we are or what things look like, so if my description's off, do tell me.)

The lamps set into the bottom of the eighteenth deck had long been dimmed to nightfall, throwing the nineteenth deck into darkness.  Many flickered on and off as figures, young and old, passed beneath them.  Many were headed to their night jobs, or off to find people of Lucinda's profession for a respite from the weariness of the life they couldn't escape.

Lucinda herself, a young wolf, stayed out of the main square for now.  She'd already done fair business for the night, and she'd heard rumors of a group gathering at the docks.  Perhaps they'd be friendly enough to share a meal with.  She missed having company, even if it was rare they were around long.

Her paws padded on the metal docks nearly silently.  The nineteenth deck was underwater, so the subs could dock here.  All but the topmost five decks were.  The bulkhead and doors blocked out the seawater from killing people, but for those not used to it, Lucinda imagined it'd be unnerving.  Being three hundred feet and counting under the crushing water wasn't particularly fun.  She smiled.  She'd long promised herself she'd be out of these slums.  It would just take time.

Crates sitting against the far bulkhead, metal and wood and recently brought in, caught her attention.  Movement.  And there, near the warehouse.  Her smile turned venomous.  There they are.

The light flickered above the coyote's head as he pressed his paw down on the ink peddle below the table. It was hard to focus with the dim lighting that shared what little power there was to his ink gun. He stood over a Wolf lying down on the table, his large body taking up most of the small business within it's cramped quarters. Spike was lucky to find a spot of his own down in the market square to run his business despite being located within another one. He operated his profession in a small room in the back of a drinking hole. The bar was small itself but was located in the main square. Not every business owner and pan handler had a spot to themselves, but the coyote had paid a lot to rent out a small space within another business as long as it was open.

"All done." Spike said flatly. He leaned into a back corner as the wolf propped himself up on the table. Before sliding off, he unlaced his combat boots and took one off after the other. He handed Spike his fee and slid off the table onto his bare paws, lowering his head as to not hit the short ceiling as he stood.

"Thanks, Spike." The wolf said before slipping his shirt back on and saluting him before heading out.

The coyote nodded as he lit a cigarette and his last customer of the night slipped away. He looked at the boots the wolf left behind and kicked off his tattered shoes. He laced up the boots and tossed out his old footwear. Packing up for the night, the coyote packed up his ink and switched off the small light the hung above his head. He slid out the small door and locked up. Passing through the small bar and into the busy square, he tossed his cigarette butt aside and began walking home.

The crowded square was bustling with people desperate for money or food, some offering the coyote scraps of garbage or food in exchange for whatever they could get. Spike just walked along knowing he couldn't give them anything, even if he wanted to. Pups and other cubs had run up to him, surrounding the coyote and asking for candy and money while they all padded down his pockets. Slum children were certainly more successful at pick pocketing and robbery than most ugly encounters Spike had been faced with in the past. The coyote laughed.

"You think there's money here?" The coyote asked with a grin. "No one has money here." The children, unable to find anything to steal or receive, scurried off to find someone else to bother. "Damn kids." The coyote huffed as he continued on his way.

Taking a detour, Spike climbed up to the upper levels to avoid the crowds in the decks below. He'd hope to find more peace and quiet among the cargo areas even if it was the long way home. Up ahead of him, he saw a shadowy figure standing alone. As he got closer, he noticed it was a young wolf who was standing alone among the cargo. Spike didn't think he'd been noticed yet but his eyes squinted, skeptical of the wolf's intentions. He wasn't in the mood to fight someone after a long day at work. Instead of pressing forward, he stood there waiting to see what she would do.

Murph takes notice of shadis through the window pointing to a silhouette. Not knowing who it was, he comes rushing out with his hand on his gun, holstered to his hip.
"State your name and business!"
Murph said with a stern, protective tone.

Fear crossed Lucinda's face, pitiful whimpering reaching his ears as she covered her hands in her paws, trembling.  "P-please, I didn't m-mean to alarm you.  D-don't shoot..."  Her voice caught on her sobs, tears rolling down her face.  "I-I promise, I'm not harmful," she said through her tears and paws.

Murph re-holsters his weapon and exits his defensive stance.
"I'm sorry, I thought you were DS. Are you a recruit?" Murph said as he put his hand up to everyone else in the warehouse to signal that everything was okay.
Title: Re: The Den

Spike stopped dead in his tracks. He noticed the wolf plead for her safety. He wasn't planning on doing the same but who was confronting her? Silently, he moved closer among the cargo to see who had the gun. Turns out, he wasn't alone. There were more people in the warehouse than he originally thought. He cursed his poor decision to take this route home. There was never escaping the madness of the slums, no matter where he went.

The coyote wasn't armed but he had no intentions of getting into a fight tonight. Chances were, he knew who was pointing the gun. If they had ink, it was most likely Spike's. Most militia and armed personnel came to him for tattoo work, not because he was the only tattoo artist in the main square, but because he liked to carry conversation about the old days patrolling with them. But it was dark, and shadows seemed to provide better cover than some of the men who hid within them. Spike knew this all too well.

He inched closer to get a better look as to who it was. He'd heard them mention "DS" and "recruit." His thoughts began to race. Maybe he didn't know this person after all. He didn't have a gun, but they probably didn't know that. Cornered, Spike decided to show himself. Spike walked out from the shadows behind Lucinda. He kept his paws up at shoulder level to show he was unarmed. With this approach, it had it easier to swipe a weapon from someone's hands if they came close enough.

"Don't shoot, remain calm." The coyote took another step closer but remained behind the young wolf, half using her a shield from any stray bullets. "My name is Spike, I'm a veteran of the HORDE armed security force. What the hell are you doing up here?"

Another wolf would walk out to stand by Murph. "Dont worry, everything is fine spike. We are recrutes and was worried she was apart of DS so my friend here may have gotten a bit carried away but he was worried for our safety." The wolf said calmly his voice carrying just enough for them to here. "My name is Mitch and this is My friend Murph."

*Shadis assumed nothing would happen, as these two figures seemed non-hostile, but he decided he should prepare himself, just in case they turned out to be hostile after all. Relying on his experience with sneaking to survive, he slipped into the shadows behind the various cargo crates nearby, and proceeded to sneak quietly towards the group. He figured it would be best to have someone hidden within the shadows and ready to act, in case something goes wrong. He moved behind the two unknown strangers as they conversed, hoping his sneaking combined with their being distracted would keep them from noticing him.*

Murph, now visibly annoyed, turns his attention to Mitch.
"Did you not hear him?!? He's a veteran of security!"
Murph with his hand still on the weapon, and finger on the release button of his kydex holster stares into the coyote's eyes.
"Fine." He gave in, "I trust Mitch as a good judge of character. Come closer please. I just want to do a quick search so I can be at ease. I've spent a good 7+ years with my head in a set of crosshairs."
He said taking his hand completely off the weapon, and showing his hands in a friendly position.
Title: Re: The Den

The wolf's words clicked in Spike's head. They're recruits!? For Black Paw!? The coyote immediately narrowed his eyes. "I mean no disrespect, but you'll have to remain that way. I don't consent to any searches." He said flatly.

Spike didn't trust these people. He'd dealt with the Black Paw resistance before in early days of his time as a security officer. Black Paw had also been responsible for the death's of his friends in the line of duty. They had only momentarily been pointing a weapon at an unarmed civilian. They were jumpy with their triggers and they were obviously up to something.

"I'm unarmed, I assure you. I don't want any trouble, I'm just passing through." Spike said, his paws still raised at chest level.

The coyote's eyes glanced down at Murph's sidearm that remained holstered, then quickly back at Murph. "Look, I don't know what you're both up to, but I can tell you that security patrols through here on a regular basis. I suggest we all go home before something bad happens."

Spike was emphasizing the word, putting on a spin of generality. The coyote was tense. It was instinctive for him to distrust the resistance. Even he knew better than to believe anything they said to be true. He only could have guessed what they were doing in the warehouse among the important cargo. He half expected for one of them them to detonate right in front of him and kill everyone. The thought almost made him smile. His luck was never that good.
Title: Re: The Den
Post by: NautilusWolf on March 16, 2014, 06:30:45 PM
Murph stopped midway to the coyote. He could tell this man was not the type to mess around.
"fine. If you won't be subject to search, then how about you come into the warehouse, have a nice chat. I will put the gun away, as long as we just sit and chat." Murph had said trying to get the stranger to the warehouse. Murph didn't trust him, and he knew the coyote didn't trust him much either. The conversation had a rocky start at best, but if it were any consolation, it was to have the coyote in for a friendly chat.
"If you come in, we can offer you food, some MRE's. You must know foods getting harder to come by in the lower decks with DS tightening food supply." He said.
If there was one thing Murph knew, it was that a society works thinks with it's stomach, not its head. This was ever apparent, as the lower decks always focused more on survival, rather than reasoning. Murph wasn't a bad guy, he just couldn't trust that many people in his life. In his own mind, he liked to think everyone as untrustworthy. When they left, it hurt a whole lot less that way.

Lucinda shook violently, even as he took the gun away.  She looked around at all of the canines in shock and terror, stopping at a handsome black wolf for a moment too long.  "I-I'm harmless.  I simply wanted c-company.  It's so lonely down here, and I...  Just please don't shoot me."

He walked over to the warehouse door opening it hen walking inside. Looking around he noticed shadis was missing. "shade, you in here?"

One of Spike's ears perked at the sound of food, he hadn't eaten in a couple of days. Business had been getting slow and there was less and less wholesome meals to come by these days. The coyote turned back to look at the young girl who was now pleading behind him, then back at Murph.

"That may all depend on what we're talking about in there. I don't want to see anyone get hurt."

He had little options at this point. He would have liked to have kept walking to get home but it looked like these canines wanted some information first. They were persistent in getting the coyote to speak to them, he feared they might try to force him somehow, if they could. Spike didn't fear death, but he really didn't enjoy starving to death either. Ideas of what to do bounced around in his head.

He looked back at the young wolf. He knew she couldn't ensure their safety, but maybe they'd be less likely to blow his brains out if she came along to talk as well. She WAS looking for company after all.

The coyote finally dropped his paws. "We can talk. But she's coming too." He said, gesturing back to Lucinda.

Mitch nodded. "i was referring to everyone. including her, that is if you want to." He was poking his head out of the ware house walking out with some food handing it to the coyote. "You look famished, dont worry i didn't poison it." He then seemed to eat a bit to prove so. "Your the tattoo artist right?"

Murph walked away to the corner. He sat alone, watching them talk. He unholstered his weapon and unloaded the magazine, while also clearing the chamber of any loaded rounds. Murph stared at the gun with a fond expression. All his life he felt alone and scared. Firearms cleared his mind of such a thought, but he still couldn't help but feel out of place among other people. He began to clean the weapon, muttering to himself. His focus never left his Glock 17. Murph sat in silence cleaning his weapon.

Spike took the MRE that Mitch had handed to him. He watched Mitch take the first sample before tearing off the packaging of his own meal. Beans...Nice. Spike thought to himself. He'd never been picky with food, but baked bean MRE's were all security were often given. Sometimes there were chicken sandwiches or ravioli, but half the force knew baked beans would be the death of them.

He had opened a second MRE and handed it over to Lucinda, who quietly stood aside. The coyote was confused as to what she was doing here, but her company was far from unwelcome, atleast to him anyway. The coyote stuffed his face with beans before remembering what Mitch had asked. He looked up

"Yeah, I was discharged after some 'new workplace politics' were put in place. Now I ink people who've got anything worth a trade." He said behind a mouthful of beans. He pointed his plastic spoon at Mitch and Murph.

"You still haven't told me what you're doing down here. Unless your purpose down here is strategic, I suggest we move to safer location to talk." He said, taking another spoonful.

Mitch nodded. "Good, so my IQ didnt fail me." He said for a moment then pondered something looking around. "Dont worry, we should be fine. DS rarely come through this block its got too many alleyways and cargo crates. The likely hood of an ambush on them is high so in order to reduce casualties they dont patrol down here." He sat down continueing to eat from a small rice ball for a moment. "If you want, we may need someone with an artistic skill set as well as more combat. Would you care to join the black paw to help the den?" He said taking another bite clearly smart enough to tell what may or may not happen next predicting ahead on every last movement around the group.

*Shadis followed from the shadows as the group moved to the warehouse and began eating. He positioned himself behind cover, keeping an eye out on the path that the two strangers took, in case any Den security were to come through their as well. He was sure to position himself in a spot that Mitch would notice him standing in, so he would no longer wonder where he had gone. Ever now and again, he would glance at the group, keeping a lingering eye on Lucinda the longest, a faint look of compassion in his eyes.*

(Sorry for the long wait to post! I lost internet for a couple days D:)

The coyote dropped the plastic fork into the MRE container and put the food package aside on a crate. "Well...what's in it for a guy like me?" The coyote leaned forward and propped his head up with his arms over a crate. He didn't have much incentive to go about fighting for political change or revolution, but he was always interested in more work if the reward was fair to decent.

Murph looked up, releasing the slide of the Glock 17, and throws the toothpick he was using to scrape solid grease from small corners onto the floor.
"Freedom. The one thing we never had. We'll have food, shelter, and our voices heard."
He gets up and holsters his G17.
"It's the only reason we should bother to exist, to dismantle a corrupt government. Make everyone have equal opportunity, not by just being born into it."

*Shadis chimes in* "With our corrupt government gone, we'll have a lot more resources to spread around. We can move some things your way: food, money, more ink to use, a nicer place of business, etc. We take care of our own. The same offer could be extended to you as well, Ma'am..." *He gestures to Lucinda*

The coyote was surprised, he'd never thought of going against the values and rules of his government's tyranny. It's all he'd ever known. He struggled to even remember the last time he'd thought of leaving this place, his only focus was surviving within it. His mind began to race. What was the outside world like? What did it mean to be free?

"...Where do I sign up?" Spike asked, a smile crossing his face.

Mitch nodded as he tossed him a hoodie with a black paw along the back of it. "Welcome to the resistance." He said looking over at the girl. "And you? will you be joining us?" He asked.

*Lucinda seems intimidated by Mitch's sudden question, but quickly caves* "I... I suppose so... There just isn't enough food to survive off of down here... If you guys have food, then I'll join. I'm no good in a fight, though..." *Shadis overlooks the scene. He feels a need to protect the girl, though he doesn't know why. Shaking the feeling off, he returns to his lookout, hoping something exciting will happen soon*

"Alright then." Mitch said tossing her the same style of hoodie he has on. "Our first task will be to interrupt the execution of one of our own comrades. It will be tonight at about 5:30, it will be in the main square, a rifle is perched up on a roof. So someone thats a good shot and is agile will have to get to it, then we need a diversion team to distract the patrols nearby. and finaly we need someone who can run in and grab the hostage and get him out of there. Any questions?" he said all this in a few short breaths and looked around at the recruits.

There was a moment of awkward silence as Spike looked left then right at the "recruits" that he'd now joined. He cleared his throat then spoke.

"So...do I get a gun?" He asked, someone confused as to what he was supposed to to next. Being unarmed and lacking background intel, he needed to be  brought up to speed.

Mitch nodded towards the shed. "Everything you need will be in there, and most of us are not exactly up to speed as well. If you have any other questions feel free to ask and i will try to answer them as best as i can."
