Title: The Wondrous Sequence (Competition)!
Post by: anoni on February 21, 2014, 03:26:49 PM
Here's a mathematics game! It's more of a competition and it's pretty simple, essentially all you have to do is give a number between 1 and 1,000,000,000. Simple right!

Ok there is more to this game, it's based on this sequence which essentially goes like this. I get a number, if the number is even I divide it by 2, if the number is odd I multiply it by 3 and add it by 1. I keep doing this to the number until it reaches 1. The person who gives the number that takes the MOST steps to get to 1 wins!

Here's an example
Poster 1 = 16

Quote
Steps:
1. 16 / 2 = 8 (16 is even)
2. 8 / 2 = 4 (8 is even)
3. 4 / 2 = 2 (4 is even)
4. 2 / 2 = 1 (2 is even)

Therefore 4 steps

Poster 2 = 17

Quote
Steps:

1. 17*3 + 1 = 52 (17 is odd)
2. 52 / 2 = 26 (52 is even)
3. 26 / 2 = 13 (26 is even)
4. 13*3 + 1 = 40 (13 is odd)
5. 40 / 2 = 20 (40 is even)
6. 20 / 2 = 10 (20 is even)
7. 10 / 2 = 5 (10 is even)
8. 5*3 + 1 = 16 (5 is odd)
9. 16 / 2 = 8 (16 is even)
10. 8 / 2 = 4 (8 is even)
11. 4 / 2 = 2 (4 is even)
12. 2 / 2 = 1 (2 is even)
12 steps!

In this case, poster 2 is winning because he guessed a number that required 12 steps, while poster 1 only guessed a number that requires 4 steps (and these numbers only differed by 1!). SO yeah, the aim of the game is to find the number between 1 - 1,000,000,000 that has the most steps (hint: It's not 1,000,000,000). You can either guess, or actually try and find an educated solution. But this has been a problem with mathematicians for years and still remains unsolved, whether a number exists that will never get to 1.

I will keep a high score, whoever gets "number 1" gets my appreciation!

High Score:
  1. Twilight Rose: 392 steps
  2. Trixsie: 361 steps
  3. Bandal: 294 steps
  4. Nic: 291 steps
  5. MrRazot: 130 steps

(Also don't worry, you don't have to figure out the steps, just post a number here and I'll tell you the steps (either by replying or just updating the high score list))

going for a small number I see!

Well you shouldn't be disappointed, you have 131 steps, so you're winning :D-

Good guess Bandal, that's 184 steps, that puts you in the lead! :D

Trixsie: 228 steps. Congratz to be the first over the 200 mark!

Nic: 291 steps (holy crap)

It's extremely coincidental that every new guess has been larger than the last xD

Adding another digit! Lets see what happens

115 steps!

Yeah I know, you'd think adding another digit would make it bigger, but this thing is ESSENTIALLY random. For example 7 has more steps than 17 xD

(Also the largest I've ever gotten was about 350, but that's me doing quite a bit of guesses)

Trixie goes for the Three 9's, 8's and two 7's. Ending it on an odd number so that should increase the steps, using only 8 digits, but that worked for you in the past. It's a large number (in the 8 digit market) so it should have a suitable number. My prediction though is it won't be above Nic's.

Trixie, your step count is..

187! Nice try Trixie, but unfortunately you weren't able to beat nic's score!

Bandal comes in with his seemingly random numbers. Trying to figure out a pattern to them but can't, so I assume they're random! Bandal is going for the 8 digits instead of 9 and has ended on an odd number. However, it's a relatively small number, being only a little over thirty million. Lets see what how many steps bandal gets!

Bandal, your step count is...

294! Bandal! That's amazing! Maybe picking absolutely random numbers is a good way to go! Bandal that puts you up to number 1, beating Nics score by only 3 steps!

But what if Twilight Rose gets even higher, Twilight rose decided to go with what he knew and pick the digits of Pi! Very clever! Twilight has opted to go for 9 digits, this mightn't necessarily give him more steps, but I think on average it should. He ends on an odd number which should give a few more steps. Lets see what Pi gives us!

Twilight Rose, your step count is...

93! Looks like Pi wasn't the best choice, better luck next time Twilight!

So far it seems like picking 8 digits instead of 9 has been relatively successful! And picking absolute random numbers seem to warrent bigger results, perhaps results with a pattern are less likely to get more steps?

Trixie decides not to use a random number, but claim it is random! A sequence moving up by 1's, using 8 digits, ending in odd and is a small number, lets see if this warrants some success...

Trixie your step count it... 229 steps! This isn't enough to beat Nic or Bandal but is your personal record! So congratulations!

MrRazot has gone for luck, he has controversially ended on an even number, which might reduce some of the steps made, it's 8 digits and a relatively small number. Lets see what happens

MrRazot, your step count is... 110! Congratulation, you beat your record, but your record! If Twilight Rose doesn't get higher then you won't get last.

Twilight Rose has also decided to end on an even number, picking 8 digits and relatively random choice. Lets see if this warrant some results!

Twilight Rose gets a whopping 230 steps! Meaning that (unfortunately) MrRazot is still last and trixie is second last by only 1 point! Tensions are going to get high!

Um, holy crap, Twilight Rose XD You picked a very, very good guess. I'm actually gonna leave that to the end because it was so phenomenal.

Just so you know Nic, you can guess as many times as you like and only your highest one will count.

Bandal, your fibbonaci sequence may get you results, lets see!

Unfortunately bandal, that was only 132 steps, strengthening the idea more and more that a random sequence gets bigger results!

Now Twilight, I have to say your guess was good, your guess garnered a total of 392 steps! That's 97 more than the latest best (which was posted literally before your post) and about 40 more than the best guess I'VE EVER done! Congratulations Twilight, you're number one, I don't see anyone beating that for a while but I've been surprised before!

Poor trixie D:

That's only a 6 digit number :O Lets see what it gives

113 steps, yeah, I'd go for higher digit numbers xD

However, 113 steps is large for a 6 digit number, so perhaps guesses in the 999,000,000-1,000,000,000 domain will hold a lot of steps?

I didn't see this whoops!

The amount of steps is 361! Good job Trixsie! It's very high but still not number 1, but you're number 2 again!
