Title: Anime/Manga
Post by: ShiroTenshiRyu on January 10, 2014, 06:30:25 PM
I didn't see an anime or Manga thread, (Hope I'm not blind.) So I figured why not make one! Now all furs have a place to talk about all their favorite anime/manga series, character, plots and more!

To start why not a simple check on you furs favorite series! Mine would have to be Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood. Short simple series no over the top complex plot, but still a deep meaningful series. The Characters are some of the most well defined I've ever seen in a series and the motivations of the characters are some of the I've ever seen.

So what about you furs?

I have so many favourites! I started reading Mirai Nikki when it was first published, I'd like to see the anime adaption, as it's probably easier for me to get a hold of. My sister has the series I think. >w>

But as for my anime favourites, I'd have to say Wolf's Rain, Bamboo Blade, Death Note, and Spice and Wolf. Plus most of Ghibli, because childhood. Also, I'm half way through the first series of Ghost Hound, anyone seen it?

The last anime I watched all the way through was Cuticle Detective Inaba. XD I liked it because it was short, silly, and didn't really require too much investment in the plot. Mostly because there really WASN'T any plot. :P But I'd really like to get back into Attack on Titan (I think I'm still only on Episdoe 13 or something), and I still need to finish Gurren Lagann. >.>

NO SPOILERS, PLEASE!!

Ghost in a shell has to be one of my favourite mature animes, it just has so much depth, intrigue and philosophy.

GITS really screwed with my mind the first time I watched it. Vee and I started watching Black Butler again a couple months ago since the English dubbing of Season 2 finally released.

Ghost in THE shell? ;) I'm a pretty big fan, myself! I've only seen the first movie, though.

Gundam Wing aired in America over 12 years ago. They stopped airing it back in '05. Gundam 00 aired 3 years ago, and stopped airing last year. Unicorn Gundam's not done yet so it's not going to air in America any time soon.

My all time favorite series ever would have to be Dragon Ball. It was my first real experience with anime and I still love it almost 20 years later.

Other favorites would be:
Yuyu Hakusho
Bleach
Soul Eater
Street Fighter 2V
Cowboy Bebop
Space Dandy
Death Note
Etc...

Hey I really want to get more into Anime...
What do you recommend is a good one to start with?

Also I have read the Death Note series and really liked it

It all depends on what genres you like, Maska. :) If you liked the Death Note Manga, the anime would be a good place to start. Personally, I grew up watching stuff like Dragon Ball Z and Yu Yu Hakusho, but both of those are pretty long series. Right now, I'm watching Attack on Titan (I'm on episode 14, so to everyone else: no spoilers from anything after, please), and every now and then I'll watch an episode of Bleach when it comes on TV.

Cowboy Bebop is also a really good series; very mature and artistic in terms of its content and style.

No problem. ^_^

I haven't read the manga myself, but I know there are some differences (which of course is the case with any screen adaptation of a book). I still really enjoyed it, though!

Do you recommend Subbed or dubbed
Title: Re: Anime/Manga
Post by: Nobi on February 16, 2014, 06:23:21 AM
I watched it subbed, so I recommend that, as I do with most anime. I've heard a little bit of the english voice acting for Death Note, and it just sounded so strange to me after hearing it with Japanese audio.

I think the only anime that I seem to prefer in English is Dragon Ball Z, but that's probably just because I grew up with it that way. Same for Bleach.

I watch dubbed, it's important to note that some anime have better english actors that japanese, such as the case of Cowboy bebop and arguably, deathnote.

Why would you say that? I am not denying it I would just like to know why?

Death Note's English dubbing sucked terribly. I grew up on anime, so I watch subs only (except when Vee's watching). Honestly, aside from all 3 Dragonball series and G Gundam, the voice acting is a hell of a lot better in Japanese. If you enjoy something as sinisterly delicious as Death Note, I highly recommend Black Butler and Little Pet Shop of Horrors. xxxHolic is a definite recommendation, too. If you decide to read the manga for xxxHolic, you must also read Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicles as the stories for both manga overlap and you'll find clues about one manga in the other and vice versa (they had decided against doing this in the anime).

There are some good English voice acting in the following anime, though they still aren't as good as the original:
-Gundam Wing
-Guyver
-Bleach
-Ranma 1/2 (original series drawn by Rumiko Takahashi)
-Ranma 1/2 (reboot with different artist, but story still by RT)
-Battle Athletes
-Battle Ahtletes Victory
-Cowboy Bebop
-Outlaw Star
-Sailor Moon (The cat voices are very off)
-Sailor Moon S (Same as before)
-Fairy Tail
-One Piece (surprisingly)
-Black Butler
-D. Gray Man (some characters are off)
-Needless (a lot of female character sound alike)

Also, for those of you who have read a LOT of Clamp's releases (i.e. Cardcaptor Sakura, Magic Knight Rayearth, etc.), you will LOVE Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicles. Every single creation ever released by Clamp comes together in this awesome series. The brief description does give a little away, so I'm putting it in a spoiler, even though all reviews mention it.
A brief description that's found in any intro the series, Princess Sakura of the country of Clow (yes, as in Clow Reed) loses her memories in the form of powerful feathers, which are scattered throughout time and space. Now, Syaoran and Sakura, along with 2 other companions, must traverse worlds to retrieve these feathers to save Sakura from dying.

Tsubasa is possibly one one the most epic animes of all time. And that's even with the Tokyo movie XD

here's a little insider. Tokyo Revelations and Spring Thunder Chronicles (2 of the 3 movies for the anime) are actually right from the manga, whereas Princess in the Birdcage Kingdom was NOT. In the anime, many things were skipped/omitted. The story is much more thorough in the manga, which is a must-read.

Hmm so many but lets see if I can narrow down a list  XP .

~Ef a Tale of Memories
~Kino's Journey
~Ghost in the Shell
~Tiger and Bunny
~Eden of the East
~Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood
~Fate/Zero
~Baccano
~Durarara
~Another
~Kara no Kyokai : Garden of Sinners
~Clannad

Truthfully though if I did the list on a different day I may end up with different results  XD .

I'd enjoy High School DxD if they just stop delaying and finish up their seasons on time the first time through instead of doing 1/3 of the season and then delaying 1-2 months. Still waiting on Season 2 of High School of the Dead. Was confirmed almost 2 years ago to release, and only 2 episodes have released since then. 2 of some of the best anime (and their manga counterparts) and so many delay issues.
