Title: Random facts
Post by: sigols on October 10, 2013, 12:46:02 PM
Im bored right now, so lets try this. Reply with the wierdest, craziest or most straight out insane facts you know. But keep it real, only real facts from the real world. Im rather known in my school and local area for having tons of wierd facts, so lets see if anyone else have some wierd facts. This can be wierd laws, crazy facts or anything like that.
I start out by this: The coins from Super Mario if they are as most people asume, gold, they would weigh 4,5 ton. And in US dollars that would be worth 228 000 000 usd. So being a plumber in Italy is not as bad as you think.  ;)

Fun fact for those who aren't Canadian or know little of Canada's laws and whatnot. The legal drinking age in most provinces is 19 (In some it's even 18) while the legal age to purchase cigarettes is also 19.

Another one; the capital of the entire country of Canada is Ottawa, Ontario (Which I happen to live near). Meanwhile the capital of the province of Ontario is NOT Ottawa but, rather, Toronto. Kind of weird, no?

Apparently when cats rub up against your leg, they're claiming you as their own personal possession rather than showing affection. Basically that means that you're a thing to them rather than a person XD.

You can tell from the statue of a mounted horseman how the rider died. All 4 feet on the ground means they died of natural cause, 1 foot up means they died of wounds sustained in battle, 2 legs raised means they died in action.

If the piper was killed back in the days when Scottish soldiers were piped into battle, the soldiers had been trained to fight more aggressively once the bagpipes fell silent.

In WW1 the Germans called the Scots "Ladies From Hell" because they fought ferociously and wearing kilts.

How about some random facts about cockroaches?

The praying mantis is a very close relative of the cockroach.

A cockroach can survive for a week without its head.

A cockroach can also survive the fallout from a nuclear explosion (just not the explosion itself, of course).

Cockroaches have been made into the world's first commercially available cyborgs.

Modern-day Battlefield, Halo, Gears and CoD players will say that camping is real skill and that Running and Gunning is an "annoying new phenomenon". However, that is false. In original FPS multiplayer games, camping proved the same as it does today, low and pathetic stats and the camper has no testicular fortitude. In fact, all official Counter-strike tournaments after the first official one, included a Camp-Meter, which if you camp for too long, your meter goes up and you die, and you must move a minimum of 10 yards for the meter to stop moving. Obviously, it builds up faster than it drops. In fact, all the best players in the world don't camp at all. In reality, R&G is original skill. Campers are just only discovering good players because they outnumber all other players.

The term "the whole 9 yards" came from WWII fighter pilots in the South Pacific. There's a cosmic ray (possibly a proton) that was observed in Utah, it is known as the "Oh-My-God particle". The reason it's called that is because of the severe amount of energy, it has (1020 eV) roughly 50 Joules of energy, that's about as much as a baseball moving at 100km/h, DONE BY A SINGLE PROTON. To put this in perspective, if a 1 kg object was moving as fast as this proton, it would have enough energy to completely destroy the moon, it would be the equivalent of 1,000,000 magnitude 9.1 earthquakes, more energy than the entire human race has used in 2011, 100,000,000 times over.

If you're shocked by a low-current tesla coil, you won't feel any electrical shock! This is because the tesla coil changes current direction faster than your nerves can detect. So you won't feel any pain until a few hours after the shock, when your body starts noticing burns in your tissue.

I'm just putting in perspective, the actual energy was only 50 joules, but that's coming from a sub-atomic particle, whose mass is extremely small! So when you convert it to a 1kg particle, moving at the same speed,BOMB it becomes much more.

Did you know that having cold drinks with a hot meal is actually bad?

When you drink something cold (i.e. water or soda, etc) it solidifies the fats and oils that you take in, which in turn end up absorbed by your intestines and become fat cells, flab, and in rare cases can end up developing into cancer.

Drinking something warm/hot with your meal will actually help your body absorb the correct nutrients and expel the other stuff, keeping oils and fats traveling through your system so they don't get absorbed. As a bonus, it'll be easier to take a dump.

And you've probably said, "why don't they just use a pencil?" Which you thing would be the most simple option.
But actually not! Pencil leads are made of graphite, which is a highly conductive material. The risk is that graphite particles can find their way into all sorts of hardware on board, and cause fires.

Gundam is the longest running anime series ever. Most people don't know this, but until the G Gundam series in '95, every Gundam series since the first one (total of well over 20 series) have all been 1 continuous story line with a ton of sequels.

The average person makes about 1hp while riding my bike.
If you translated that into electricity, it would be about 400 watts In the real world.
That is the same amount of power your laptop takes while charging.
You could think of it this way; it would take 260 of you to do the same amount of work as a F150.

100'C is where water boils
0'C is where it freezes

Some physics mathematics.

The Kelvin scale starts at "absolute zero", where there is no temperature at all. Other than that, it is identical to Celsius (the difference between 0 K and 1 K is the same 0 C and 1 C)

All matter has a wavelength nature, that is you have a wave!
However, for large objects like a baseball, this wave is very small.
In order to diffract a baseball it would need to be almost 0 degrees K and be moving one atomic radius per age of the universe.

There is no integer that is the sum of two other integers cubed (NO whole number satisfy a3 + b3 = c3);

1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + ...  = -1/12. (LIMITS)

In Java the String class has a method to turn a String into a String.

In North America the magnetic field in our electricity flops back and forth 60 times a second, aka 60 hertz (due to the rotational speed of the generator)
However in Europe because 60 apparently doesn't go well with the metric system they use 50 hertz.

Also, cars use red and black to colour code their wires, how ever in trailers the black goes to ther cars red and the other wire is white.

Did you know that because of this you get PAL systems and NTSC.
NTSC runs on the American 60Hz and was designed for black and white televisions.
PAL was for Europe, but was designed to be able to run Colour images.
NTSC would have to be worked on before colour worked properly, but this is the primary reason we have region locks.

However these days you'll find that most devices have built in power transformers that'll run 50-60Hz and 100-250v which effectively lets them work anywhere over the world with only the need for a socket adapter

While it is no longer the case, New Zealand was once governed as a part of the territory of New South Wales (later a part of Australia). When Australia federated in 1901, New Zealand was offered a place as one of their states. New Zealand refused and is its own country with no ties (other than economic and commonwealth) to Australia.

A kiwi is not a fruit – it is New Zealand’s native flightless bird and a slang term for a New Zealander. Kiwis call the fruit “kiwifruit” – they are also known as Chinese Gooseberries.

New Zealand was the first major nation to have universal suffrage. In 1893 it became legal for all male and female citizens of New Zealand to vote.

New Zealand was first discovered by Europeans in 1642 when Dutch sailor Abel Tasman arrived. He left New Zealand after several of his crew were killed by Maoris, and it was not until 1769 that English Captain James Cook arrived and mapped the land.

New Zealand is one of only three countries that have two official (and of equal standing) national Anthems. The first is God Save the Queen (the English National Anthem) and the other is God Defend New Zealand. The other two countries with two anthems are Denmark and Canada which both have a Royal Anthem and a State anthem.

Another native bird of New Zealand (the Moa) was one of the largest birds in history – standing up to 3.6m (12 foot) tall and weighing 300kg. Unfortunately they were hunted to extinction by the Maoris by the end of the 1500s.

New Zealand was the first country to have its three top positions of power held simultaneously by women: The Prime Minister (Helen Clark), the Governor General (Dame Silvia Cartwright), and the Chief Justice (Sian Elias).

New Zealand has a strong hold on the international trade in sheep meat. There are presently around 9 sheep to every 1 human in New Zealand (the population of New Zealand is 4 million).

Wellington, the Capital City of New Zealand is the southernmost capital city in the world.

New Zealand was forced out of the ANZUS (Australia, New Zealand, United States) alliance in the 1980s when it outlawed nuclear arms and power. To this day, there are no nuclear power stations in New Zealand, and a change of law would be required before one could be built. New Zealand retains its military ties with the United Kingdom.

New Zealand has one of the most liberal media arenas in the world. Distinctly left wing versus right wing press is not as obvious there as in other nations.

New Zealand is a fairly liberal nation with homosexual marriage being legal and prostitution, soliciting, and brothel keeping being legal. The driving age is 15.

the consensual sex age is 16, and the drinking age is 18 (though minors accompanied by adults are allowed alcohol in restaurants).

Lake Taupo (one of New Zealand’s most popular tourist destinations) was the source of the largest known eruption in the world in the last 70 thousand years. It had a Volcanic Explosivity Index of 8. It released over 530 cubit kilometers of magma.

New Zealand was the last major landmass to be populated (with the exception of the polar regions).

New Zealander and Nobel Prize Winner, Ernest Rutherford is known as the father of nuclear physics for his orbital theory of the atom.

Sir Edmund Hillary – the first man to reach the peak of Mount Everest was a New Zealander (born in Auckland) and his face is on the New Zealand $5 bill.

Desert is referring barren land with little vegetation; it doesn't need to be hot and sandy. Could also mean a place with little to no population. Both of those definitions fit Antarctica perfectly.

In 1939 the Soviet Foreign Minister, Vyacheslav Molotov, claimed Russia was not dropping bombs on Finland, but merely airlifting food to starving Finns.
The Finns, who were not starving, soon dubbed the RRAB-3 cluster bomb "Molotov's bread basket", and named the improvised incendiary device that they used to counter Soviet tanks the "Molotov cocktail", as "a drink to go with the food".

In 2005, Finnish cuisine came under heavy fire from two leaders of countries renowned for their cuisine (Italy and France). The Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi claimed that "I've been to Finland and I had to endure the Finnish diet so I am in a position to make a comparison." Berlusconi started his anti-Finnish food campaign in 2001. He went on: "The Finns don't even know what Parma ham is."
Later, in 2008, the Finnish pizza chain Kotipizza (Homepizza) won the America’s Plate International pizza contest in New York, while Italy came in second.
They named their award-winning smoked reindeer pizza Berlusconi as symbolic payback for the critique Finnish cuisine had received from the Italian prime minister earlier.

...Never let it be said that Finns have no sense of humour :'P
