Microsoft has been hounding me about this in emails and notices and such, so you all probably know already, but in case you dont:
The MSN and Skype messenger services are going to be merging over the next couple months, and at some point in March (I think), the MSN service is going to discontinue entirely. So if you want to keep your MSN contacts, you'll have to move over to the Skype program.
Information: http://www.skype.com/intl/en/get-skype/on-your-computer/windows-live-messenger/ (http://www.skype.com/intl/en/get-skype/on-your-computer/windows-live-messenger/)
And this page has more specific details about how to merge your accounts: http://community.skype.com/t5/Live-Messenger/Talk-to-Your-Messenger-Contacts-on-Skype/td-p/1183378 (http://community.skype.com/t5/Live-Messenger/Talk-to-Your-Messenger-Contacts-on-Skype/td-p/1183378)
Though I personally hate this, and I'm not looking forward to merging my own two accounts, there's not much that can be done about it. I just figured it was important to make sure people know about it before their MSN messenger randomly stops working.

While I as well hate this, I must say that I've noticed that not only I barely ever chat to someone on MSN anymore but also that my MSN contacts are barely ever online (Down to 4-5 online at a time compared to 10-15 a few months ago).
Skype, Steam and Facebook however is what I use quite often to chat with people nowadays.

On the bright side, Skype may end up on Xbox
