though I think the best advice anyone can give is just to enjoy yourself.
whether this is a spiritual endeavour or just looking for some friends,

There aren't many rules to the fandom, and it's probably a lot more simple than you think it is. While there can be a lot of complexity to it, like the reason why some people are furries, and some aren't...it's not always that way, some people just do it because they like it. As far as fursonas go, you can have as many or as little as you want. I for example have one main fursona, a secondary fursona, and then 5 characters.

Hope you enjoy your stay here at TFF, it's a great place, I've been here for nearly a year now.
