Yeah I've always got a lighter on me but I find them useful.

Did you know that according to Stephen Fry, the lighter is the most useful gadget in the world?
Title: Re: lighters and matches
Post by: Luggz on May 08, 2012, 06:16:49 PM
no, the hammer is more useful
Title: Re: lighters and matches
Post by: MrRazot on May 08, 2012, 09:25:41 PM
Perhaps :P
But it would be difficult lighting something with a hammer whereas you could hit in a nail with a brick

i agree you can do a million things with fire if your created hell theres a tribe in south america where they burn the inside of a log to actually make a functional canoo if you could carv that with fire think what u could craft with more wood.

While I do enjoy playing with fire, a good tool, like a hammer or hatchet, would be more fun (and just as dangerous) for me to mess around with. I enjoy just hitting or chopping or slicing things.

A lighter or some matches may be not as exciting, but try light a fire without one :P
there will always be more exciting tools

Warm stuff melts me...   D:

But anyways; I don't play with fire.  I play with electricity instead.  :3

I like candles. A lot. Very much.

So by proxy, I have an appreciation for the flame.

The closest thing I've gotten to playing with fire, is using a torch to melt metals in order to make jewelry. Oh, and who hasn't played with hot wax?

2) get a new one

wow two pages does any body think we should keep this going? it seems like a good little topic so i was thinking lets think of as many creative uses of lighters and matches as we can but no obvious things like figurines just try and think of cool uses. :)

What I like doing with matches can be dangerous but awesome.
What I do is, I take the box and hold it between my index finger and my palm.
Then I place with it's head on the strip and hold it upright with my thumb.
I then use fy other hand to flick the match which, if done correctly, should ignite and go flying forwards.

Well you know... I do agree with you. I love playing with lighters. Especially when my friends let them lose in their appartments. I play with them so much, that I think I can concider myself suffering with some minor case of pyromania O.o See, When I play with lighters, I don't only light them up over and over again... I pass my fingers until they burn a bit cuz I love the feeling of fire burning my fingers :I Also, I tend to put the flame over something that can catch on fire (like jeans, hair or whatever) and take it away a second before it can start to burn... So yeah... There's other stuff I do with a lighter so therefore, I can tell that I have a minor case of Pyromania because I can still control myself on how far I'll go with the fire.

Try getting soft iron and melting it over a bonfire than whipping it around, it looks like you have whips of lava, it's so awesome!
Title: Re: lighters and matches
Post by: sebflynn on May 14, 2012, 06:34:41 PM
remind me to never piss you of anoni also if you add aluminum and ironoxide(rust) it creates a super hot powder that will burn through literally any thing hell it burnt through a car seriously so i would only use it in a open field with little wind very dangerous but very fun to play with cause you can add stones and make a awesome pool of lava and just dip stuff in it. and a great way to light it is by using a match not do not use a lighter this stuff is insanely hot and will cause severe burns. i would also recommend using very very small amounts and using a long fuse.

Naturally.

That's why I advice, to everyone, to not burn plastic. It releases fumes that can be toxic. :P

I remember once when I was a kid... I found a lighter somewhere and I don't know why but I started to play with it around my old house's propane tank and I almost started a fire beneath it =/ At that time, I was like 8 and unaware of the danger of it <.< Fortunately, my mom was there to prevent anything from happening.

But on another side, make burn some iron oxyde and you got yourself what we call "Thermites" that can make any metal melt :P Perfect for stealing banks >:3   0:)

And another thing I like to do is take two lighters, light up one and let out the butane out of the other one and light one lighter with the other. I think it's really cool. And sometimes, I like to light a lighter and fix the flame; I can fix it for a whole 10 minutes without giving attention to anything that revolves around me O.o

if you melt soy candle wax and have a high tolerance to pain you can stick your hand in a melted wax pile let it dry and your hand looks awesome.
also if you get a bonfire and put glass in it you can melt it you could then pick it up with an iron rod throw it against a wall and it goes awesome and splats crystallising looking really cool.

Try lighting Sodium!
you don't even need a lighter! (Water works just as well)

if you look on the periodic table if you can get your hands on any of the alkaline or earth metals and set them on fire its amassing its like a little fire work except you know with the danger of loosing a limb or being deafened by the sound.

Sparklers and fire-works are fun too :D

I used to have a friend who burned... anything he could find on the farm
Something he burned were quite frankly, stupid, he was about to burn a lithium battery!
that would of been bad >.>

Oh wow. That's a brilliant move xD Of course you can get the same effect by leaving them out on a sunny day, so he could give up on it :P
Personally I do have my aluminum foundry, which I suppose fits into the conversation of fire.

Fire is quite interesting generally.
I was always wondering what fire actually was, like an element or a mixture or a substance.
Luckily, I now know from youtube videos (actually a lecture with Richard Feynmen taught me that one XD)
Title: Re: lighters and matches
Post by: Aoren Deringer on May 25, 2012, 06:27:49 PM
xD When I was seven, I had a brilliant idea that I could figure out "the molecular structure of fire" and carry around liquid fire that I could activate at will xD
Yeah, I was a wierd child.

No idea what the ramifications of frozen fire would be though. Or its use.
Title: Re: lighters and matches
Post by: anoni on May 25, 2012, 07:39:10 PM
Well, the thing about fire is it's just movement,
well actually that's temperature as a whole,
but sometimes the movement of particles can be so much it changes the activity level of chemicals allowing them to oxidize,
the intense heat also vibrates electrostatic charge emitting electromagnetic radiation (EMR = Light)
Freezing fire, would hinder all movement, allowing the actual existence of fire to be impossible.

Lighters are awesome. I have six in my room. Pyros out there, fun fact. Get a metal container and fill it halfway with gasoline. Buy a ton of plastic cups. Push them into the gasoline until there's no gas left, only goo. That goo is napalm. Happy burning!

Nope, it has to be gasoline. Something in its composition causes it to dissolve styrofoam and react with it to form the napalm.
