I'd like to change my name to Kiaga in real life, but I kinda wanna keep my furryness out of my mudane (non-fur) life.

I'm not in the closet, but I feel as if I'd be shoving my furryness into everyone's face if I did. (I hate my RL name, so I may change it to something diffrent though)

Is it normal? You're better off not asking ME what "normal" is, but I beleive so, if you wanna become something, then what's stopping you? :)

Sounds like a good way to get people to poke fun at you for having a bizarre name. I don't understand why one can't just use their fursona name for... you know... their furry life?

I've heard of it before, but I honestly assumed it was just a silly rumor.

@ Ottersmash
I can understand that if its a crazy name like "Shadow Bloodfang" or something like that, but I don't see a problem with a name that won't make people question your sanity.

Though many casual furs wouldn't think this much of their furry name, maybe the lifestylers would like to become closer to what they dream of being, their fursonas. :)

I see no reason to change my name; I love my parents, and this is the name they wanted to give to me out of love. It would be an insult to them to want to change it.
The moment I would want to change my name to my furry name would be the moment I take this fandom way too seriously, which is unlikely to happen.

They wanted the best for you and they still do; if you'd think a new name would be best for you, it's what they want, too. That they'd be skeptical if you'd tell them your plans is another thing - name change is not an easy nor painless process and it has serious consequences which most people would like to avoid, so you're parents want you to avoid them too.

I hate my first name (B.), but the second name (J.) is so common it's not... identifying enough; also problematic because of the initials if I ever wanted to use both names (and it's not even that it's only me - someone else have had told me that...). If I'd ever change my name (I don't think I won't eventually), it'd be my second name. B. Sne; B.S. is still kinda weird but at least would sit with stuff I usually came up with compared to other people. ;)

Well, understand, my parents are open-minded people, if I wanted to change my name I can say for certain that they would by all means do nothing to stop me. However, I come from a traditional Catholic family, so my parents took a lot of time and care to choose a Biblical name for me, and even though it's a common name in my area, I still appreciate it. Like I said, I doubt they would try to stop me if I wanted a name change, but I'm sure it would hurt their feelings to know I was unhappy with the name they personally chose for their child. Besides, I personally have no qualms with my name, nor do I want to disrespect my parents, so I have no desire to change it. And even if I did, I would not change it to my furry name; I like to keep fantasy and reality separate.

I'd probably be excommunicated for abandoning the name of my father o.o

I had the thought, but I think I'd rather stay with my current name.
First of all, Timmy is my actual nickname my real name being Timothy, so no big need to change that. As for my last name, that brings me to the second point: I think "Timmy Fox" sounds quite childish and more fit for a nickname than actual name whilst my real name to me sounds more mature and something to be proud of, a more serious and strong name.
This is including my last name, yet I didn't mention it for privacy reasons...

It's too much trouble to go through changing your name legally. Why not just use your fursonas name as a nickname. Jovi is close enough to my real name I've been thinking about going by it, but who knows what I'll do. Kinda hard to change your name when people already know you as something else.

I heard of one guy who changed his name to "Boomer The Dog" which I think is well...stupid. it's a good way to be disrespected all your life just because of one thing :/

Although I agree with you to a point, if someone outright disrespects you just because of your name, you have to questions their morals anyway. xP

Would you deny them friendship if they were a good person?
I can see you questioning their priorities with a name like that, that much I can understand. But everyone has some sort of reason for doing what they do, and the very least others can do is be tolerant of their decisions as long as it doesn't hurt others. :]

(I sortta see it as his 1st name would be Boomer, middle the, and the last dog. I don't find it all that bad. :P)

Name is something that identifies you and it's best when it's sounding is associated with the actual state. Take that into account and Boomer The Dog, furry is far better than John Smith, office clerk. Not only unique but also more accurate. And may be more pleasant for the owner.

There have been many times where I briefly thought about changing my name to Lita, simply because I have grown so used to the name. However, I am quite happy with my current name. It's unique (in spelling, anyway), and, well, it's me.

I'm leaving Lita as just a nickname, not a real one.

I'm going to be honest, when I read the topic's title I was like "Wait, what?" But after reading the OP, I can safely say that... now, I'm still like "Wait, what?" I've never actually thought of renaming myself to Benny, despite the fact that I REALLY hate my current name. Benny is a character I hold dearly, but I wouldn't actually want to become him.

I was thinking of using Drake as a pen name if I ever get into writing. for some reason it feels better than my *shudders* real name. and those of you who know me by my real name would understand why..

I don't have to change my name. My fursona's name is my real name (Vee is a nickname for my first name). I love my name and the only time it will change is when I get married.

funny i didnt think this would make people think this much.
tbh as long as its not a silly name like punk rock dog and its
an actual name like jesse it shouldnt be a problem.

I, personally, love my legal name.  "Nateal."  My mother still chose the name for a home-ec project in high school, and it stuck with her.  Considering my sisters all have more mundane names, I count myself lucky that I have a unique name that has become a reflection of my non-traditional personality and life.

Would I ever change my name to something else legally?  No.  The hassle is honestly not that big of a deal.  When I got married, I legally changed my last name to my husband's, as tradition warrants.  (Don't get me wrong, I was very excited to change my name.  Though, for a long time, I thought I would always keep my last name as there were no male children to carry the name on, but a couple of years ago, one of my cousins had a male baby, so our family name will live on without my children. XD)  So the "hassle" doesn't deter me.  Some paperwork isn't a big deal for that kind of thing.

But even though I've been going by Kalylia online for a few years now and I have an entire group of friends who calls me that and variations of that, I wouldn't change my name legally.  Nateal is a reflection of who I am, and I wouldn't want to change that.

Hmmm... I wonder if there's a required minimum of three characters like in 90% of websites. I doubt they'd accept B. Other then that, I couldn't change my last name. I'm far too proud of my heritage... even if my family crest is a lobster. No really, my family was part of the Warnia clan. Just look

Now wonder you're proud, it is awesome.

Anyhow, there are people with single letter names, so you'd have to use a nickname on websites, otherwise it's legally OK I guess.

Seriously  XD , if you name yourself Boomer the dog you're really asking to be ridiculed for the rest of your life.....

As for myself, i just choose my nickname as my fursona name.
Everyone used to call my caboose after caboose from red vs blue, they say i tend to make the same stupid and pointless comments....  T_T

I'm fine either way, but for now, I'd rather have my fursona's name as a nickname rather than my legal name. Though that may change in the far future.
