(continuing off another post >.> )
im aware alot of people out there say its nothing to hide and dont have a care to wear tail n ears, but in some places its not as acceptable or just dont want to handle the attention they'll receive. so the furs who do display your public furriness how did you build the courage or did you just not care from the start?
well I'm at least clear to wear it when I'm off the clock, but I'm starting to get the courage to wear it out in public :D
Can I borrow some of your courage when you have enough? I'll even share! =<
I think this should be a separate topic so you can create one so we don't get off topic :3

ill split my courage with you, get a tail myself and then we can build ours up together ^w^
but personally, if i were to meet witha group of furs at the mall or something i would have no worries about wearing tail and ears, but by myself i might worry about everyones thoughts on the inside whether i show it or not
-
I used to (and still kinda do) have really bad social anxiety. that means that I really can't stand out or anything without having a panic attack. I've been trying my hardest to get rid of it through furry fandom. and you know what? it's been really fun! Now I enjoy it when people stare at my tail and collar when I go out wearing those, it's like "yeah I'm different and I'm damn proud of it!"
I don't wear furry gear out very often still because I'm waiting till I move out, but it's really helping me overcome my fears :3
-
I'd keep finicking with it if it was hidden just to make sure it stayed hidden, then that might look even more awkward... x_x
There are strength in numbers though, which means more strength in courage as well.~ Me myself can't wait for winter even if I hate it, cause I could get to wear my kitty hat without burning up(maybe wear the ears under it...), but I don't know about my tail...i'll have to see about that one.

I hang with a lot of fur friends with furry gear, find some people with common interests! :D

Erk..that's a hard one for me unfortuantly. I moved around 5 years ago and still have not found anyone I can relate to outside of the internet. I am in WAY over my head when it comes to finding people with common interests. Plus, college for me is really non-social so I don't talk to anyone when I don't need to~ It might just be all generalization but my highschool taught me a thing or two about the community around here so i'm just basing the local college on that. :S
-
never hurts to look!
-
I suppose... would be pretty cool if there was some sort of database where we could look up furries from our state/country and chat with them or maybe even meet up. I'm sure that would lead to a ton of furry hating cyberbullying though so nevermind...
-
I believe there is...but I don't recall it right now.
main point is: don't be afraid to be who you are!

thats lucky that you have local furs to chill with, but you are def. taking a step further than i have :D im just starting to let my sisters see my type on a furry forum(even though they probably dont even know what it is) so wearing a tail out of no where, im going to get alot of questioning.
@Runi_the_Neko, i believe you should try being alittle more social, if at all anyone you feel comfortable talking to. if you see someone else who is quite too, try talking to them because chances are they feel the same as you. i was the same way, but i slowly worked on my social skills and it helped my confidence alot ^w^ but that was just one of my concerns...

Just because you're a part of the fandom doesn't mean you have to flaunt it with public furry wear.
If it's uncomfortable for you then you shouldn't force yourself to do it.
You have to keep in mind that by wearing furry gear outside of furry socials you will get looked at; people will stare and maybe even laugh, maybe something worse. I'm not trying to be discouraging, but it's something you have to learn to expect if you want to do that.
In the end it's up to you, but you don't really gain furry points or get some higher ranking by being public, so it's not a necessity, but by all means if you want to express yourself no one is stopping you. You just have to keep in mind the consequences; the world isn't exactly filled with cupcakes and flowers all the time.
-
I try not to wear my furry gear at home because my family is...er...judgemental
-
@Vine: I personally would think being able to show what I love would be a big boost to my confidence but I can agree with you on the fact that the world kinda sucks in most aspects and i'm not everyone. Kinda makes me think of people who hate furries just because they like to flaunt their fandom. But how that isn't any different from people that love a certain style of clothing or a certain t-shirt with something on it that they love and wear out in public is beyond besides the abnormity of it when it comes to "the norm" of society.
Also, my mom thinks i'm a weirdo for even having furry stuff in the first place so I don't like wearing furry stuff at home either~
-
I do agree, some people like to flaunt, nothin' wrong with that ^_^

im aware i dont have to but im really growing to the tail fashion and i would like to wear it for the heck of it. on top of that, if it helps build my courage then bonus points!
-
I do agree, tail wearing has been a confidence building exercise!

(derp just saw this) Well yeah I get that alll the time, how I should be more social. Me and my old friends were friends since childhood, and even then we weren't all that different from the norm...well besides being the more unpopular kids but that's besides the point. I just find it hard fitting in with other kids whol have been able to form their bonds and i'm afraid they wouldn't easily accept someone new...
-
I'm actually a guy for all groups, including the furry clique!
-
i know how you feel, because i felt the same thing for a while and sometimes still do if im chilling with the really popular kids(my sister is really well known around here...) but if you dont make it awkward then it wont be, that'll make more sense eventually :) just dont try to hard, a simply hey or hello to someone you see occasionally. then the next time a hey, hows it going? then something like hey, did you hear about blah blah!? take it step by step, and if the person continues to talk to you then keep it cool and you'll get used to it. its not something you get used to over night, believe me >.>
alright im done my quick lecture! :P
-
we have enough Coloradofurs to have a furry clique!

Mraww...I guess. There needs to be more Illinoisfurs T.T
-
look around on the site and other sites for them, they might be an hour or two away but find enough and you can always hold a furmeet if there isnt one already being held :3
-
i started with a collar, then on halloween i wore my tail & ears , im currently still wearing my tail at school(my dad dosent know and he wouldnt let me if he did so im waiting till im 18 to wear it in public with him knowing) i'm telling everyone that me wearing it is part of a bet. if im going to wear it everyday(including after the"bet" is over ) what should i tell people?im comforable wearing it but i dont know how to explain (short version) why im wearing it? :?
-
i see if you keep wearing it after you won the "bet" you could just tell them you grew attached to it and laugh xD or something along those lines. but i honestly dont see too many people even asking if they see you continually wearing it, esp. if they didn't even know it was a bet in the first place :)
-
it wasnt a bet thats what i told them when they asked.
-
i show my furry side, didnt need curage, i just didnt care.
-
well the only furry apearal i own is my collar :'( but i wear it most of the time, except for now cuz the pricaple thinks is sexual which makes agians school policy any way we organized a tail day over face book. and we had in the hundreds at our highschool! XP so that was one way to go public!
-
Am I scared of being a furry in public? No! Take a look at this*: New Romney Country Fayre 2011 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRjTIJevMX0#)
*In case you haven't noticed, I'm in the suit at 0:46,
-
i ish not pupular enough to organize anything over facebook. i ish only scared cuz i ish surrounded by rednecks.
-
It's a bit different though, being in a suit? Nobody can see your face or expressions, nobody can recognize you on the street and point out that you're that crazy in a mascot costume.
-
yeah he does have a point, one of my friends is our schools mascot.
-
hhmmm >.> then i am not sure......im not popular enough to start anything over facebook but others are! i used that to my advantage!
-
. It's kinda good not being popular, if i was everyone would have taken pictures of me and my collar on halloween.
-
trust me, unless you have real friends and the confidence, you'll be screwed if you try to be a furry in public.
-
i have a few real friends , i defanitly have the confidence(i already wear my collar 24/7); i just have no short easy way of explaining my actions to the people i dont know in school(my friends already know im a fur)
-
you don't have to explain to people who don't give a shit to find out and just judge you. you just have to have the balls to not give a shit about that. have the confidence and screw them all. i've only lost 1 friend since becoming a furry, and i can care less what other people think if they don't bother and just judge. my co-workers know i'm a furry, as do my regular customers, and they don't care about the fact. scary enough, i found out one of my regulars if a fur artist.
-
this is true. my explenation is im a pround fan of anthropomorphic animals. when they ask me what that is it opens a conversation. this way they can see what a furry is through the eyes of a furry no google or the urban dictionary. its also a good way to make a possable new friend. the key is to let them ask first.

yes i would do this, given the time.
but most of the people who ask do so at my school, where, going from class to class does not provide enough time for an explanation.
-
For the explanation, i wouldnt bother, at all. I wouldn't bother explaining any of it. Let them find out for themselves, this allows you to save tons of time instead of explaining to everyone, all the time. Also, learn to not care about what people think, stop caring about their opinions because you have a general idea about what they think. Stop wasting your time with this, it's generall unnecessary and it raises more questions than answers.
For wearing furry stuff, a good reply to the "why do you wear *insert furry item here*" is "why not? "now ask them why cant you wear whatever it is or why you cant be a furry. Point out that it's not illegal, etc.

thats true. usually that tactic works best during lunch or during free class time...i dont have away around time :P

most people already have a preconceived notion of furs, which is why we explain in the first place. i'd rather be the one to tell them rather than them reading some bullshit that they get from hate sites and other urban myth bullshit or watch CSI for some shit that smears the reputation of furs.

EXACTLY!!! this is the only reason i seek an explanation or i wouldnt even bother!

you can always order online, guys, if you can't go to CONs
-
Places like:
http://www.customink.com/ (http://www.customink.com/)
http://www.sonicshack.com/ (http://www.sonicshack.com/)
will let you design your own t-shirt. Then you can decide how furry you want them to be, depending on how... 'courageous' you are.
-
ah! i remember sonicshack! i used to order shit from them when i did t-shirt design commissions back in high school.

Well i do agree with that. I wouldn't want them to think im some messed up sex addict, etc. Well they would either leave it at that or find out more, that's when it could get bad. What is also difficult is to explain it to people that know what it is but only the negatives or the misconceptions. I woul generally stop there because it's like talking to a brick wall to them.

ive had to explain what a furry was to a few people befor, good thing they never saw the negative mida about us.

the normal person would just find and believe the first thing they can find and just leave it at that for something that they most likely have no intention of making their own lifestyle. that attitude of yours would just make a more negative impact on people's view of furries rather than positive.
