well i expected some people not to know ^^; vocaloid is a voice synthesizer and extremely popular. UTAU is a freeware program based off the basic idea of vocaloid but most of the time theyre put in the same category :P theres about 50 voicebanks for vocaloid and over 3000 for UTAU but vocaloid is more popular.

heres some examples of vocaloid:

Miku Hatsune - Stargazer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bfbHm3L2aTQ#) (Miku is probably the worst example of a Japanese vocaloid to show newbies but still ><)
[Iroha Nekomura] Love is War [VOCALOID] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3KXGk5I5BYU#) (Iroha is a good example of a Japanese vocaloid)

I've liked some UTAU songs I've stumbled across, but I don't know many specifics about the genre and don't usually seek out the songs on my own.

UTAU isnt a genre and more of a culture as its mainly covers of more popular songs. i have an UTAU for my fursona and so do many other people ^^
