Title: comparing video cards
Post by: Ares the Ram on September 14, 2011, 06:40:28 AM
Im getting a new laptop to replace my computer and I need help comparing the video cards.

Heres the new one: NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M DDR3 with 1gb video memory

Mine is a  ATI Radeon HD 4800 series GDDR5 with 512 mb memory

Could anyone tell me if there would be any difference and good or bad? thanks.

There will be a difference, however I'm not too sure if the laptop will perform too much better considering laptops tend to have stripped down performance in comparison to desktops due to the more compressed format.

But considering the 540M is newer in both architecture and overall, I believe you should see a light performance increase unless other hardware such as the CPU bottlenecks it too much.

In most cases indeed, howevs not always since were comparing an older quite powerful desktop GPU to a newer laptop GPU, while the specs on the laptop GPU is newer and it's desktop counterpart is a good mid range card for those wanting high performance for a reasonable price, I still have alot of experience with laptops being slower than desktops, despite having fairly high specs.

But I stick to what I say, I doubt you'll be disappointed with the video card on the laptop, if anything will bottleneck it, it'll be something else as mentioned.
