How do I make a transparent background in GIMP 2.0?

Just give the layer an alpha layer.

Layer > Transparency > Add Alpha Channel.

By the way, you have GIMP 2.0? You need to get with the times buddy; I have GIMP 2.6.6. I would suggest you update.

OKay so I lost the original project (my avatar) so is there a way that I can make the background transparent on this file? Its just a .jpg
