When I was in middle school, I was alone in life. /emo. My plushies were best friends. I started taking them to school, maybe to gain attention, maybe to have someone with me. But I treated plushies like a four year old would. They had a name. I talked to them like they were real. They went everywhere with me and sat next to me.
Now my counselor has gifted me an otter plush I call Ed. I have not been childishly obsessed with a plushie in years. Yet I feel it starting again. I keep him with me. At dinner. Next to me while I'm typing this. On my shoulder in a photo. In my backpack for school. Next to me when I sleep. In the rim of my jeans or strapped to my arm when I'm walking around. I've started talking to him, and I'm extremely tempted to slip and start being obsessed with him like he's an imaginary friend.
Is it normal, or even okay to have an imaginary plushie friend at my age? I wonder what Ed thinks of this. Should I not be intimate friends with a plushie? What if I start thinking he is real? With my illness, that's actually a possibility.

I would say that its okay to carry him around and talk to him and stuff. I don't see anything wrong with that at all. As far as ending up thinking he's real, just keep a strong head. Always remember the fact that he's a plushy. There's not much else for me to say. Just keep a strong head and you'll be fine! :P

I used to apologize to my stuffed animals when I hadn't played with them in a while and sometimes I still do.
As long as you keep remembering that it isn't real, I think you're just fine. I keep a stuffed animal with me when my mate leaves to visit his family once a year (it's the one he made for me at Build-A-Bear when we first started dating) and my parents kind of chuckle at me having it sitting with me, but I think they think it's cute at the same time. I think having a stuffed animal close by and talking to it is kind of like a security blanket in a way, and I can understand that. Everyone just has it in their heads that only kids play with/carry around/talk to stuffed animals when really the age doesn't matter, it just seems odd for someone older to be doing it because it doesn't happen normally. I don't think there's anything wrong with it though. Like I said, as long as you remember it's not real.

and how old are you..?

Hush Artic. There's nothing wrong with having a plush, so there's no need to be mean about it.
I have a lion plush that my teacher gave me, and I love him. He's too big to take places, but I lay on him and hug him when I'm in bed.

I wasn't being mean you know T_T
just asking for age. I mean, I have plushies too (not like a lot-a lot but I want more :$ ) , a lot of people had them when they were kids. I know, there's nothing wrong with having stuffed animals.

I'd say it's A-Ok. I tend to talk to myself, and I only stopped believing my plushies were real when they had to sadly go to charity, but they're protecting others now. I say keep it up. If it makes you happy, and keeps you in a good frame of mind, what's the downside?
And artic, it was just the way you said it, it sounded patronizing.

Yeah, but it sounded like you were saying he's too old for it. Just saying man, don't shoot the messenger.

Xoxo thanks all of you for the encouragement, and letting me know that it is okay.
Artic, I am 18, to answer the question. ^_^ And I am female, Flyin', hehe.
I just worry that it'll get to the point I HAVE to have him, like I NEED him on my shoulder when I walk or he ALWAYS has to be next to me...that's the way it used to be back in middle school. A plush was like an attachment. If I didn't have my plush with me I felt bad. That sounds like a horrible dependency, but it's also really tempting because I love my plushies...

Well like I said. :P Just keep a strong head. Kay? :) Its all in your control as long as you keep a strong mind. :D I used to feel the same way kinda.

Be strong, and remember Ed is just a plushie. Iam almost 20 and i still love plusies and i still try to get them from time to time. If you think of Ed as a confert item then you should be good but to avoid becoming attached try leaving him home some times.

I don't see anything wrong with it. I honestly believe plushies can have what we call souls too. I believe everything has a soul in one way or another. In fact, in Japan there is an old belief that if you breath into a puppets mouth you give it a part of your soul. I have done that too my favorite plushie and I feel that he is alive in his own way, and I talk to him, and do stuff with him aswell.
As long as you are comfortable, there is nothing wrong with it. It dosn't matter what other people think, it's what you think that's important.
Hope I'm making some sense, I'm known too ramble sometimes ;)
