..in the furry fandom.
i went to my first Fur-meet..of the GROUP kind yesterday at arrundel mills mall. it was me, david and like 15 other people...ALL men to be exact..and to be even more precise id say about 12 of the 15 were gay and the others just wouldnt say what they were..(so im assuming gay but in the closet)
o-o
im gonna go out there and say this now..ive NEVER seen so many gay people in once place at once in my LIFE. it was weird knowing that i was surrounded by 15 men and not ONE had the SLIGHTEST interest in me XD
usualy i walk in a room and i get them DROOLING faces and lingering stares...its so bizzare for me i ACTUALY felt insecure. (with how i grew up and the pressures i alwase got i alwase feel that i have to oversexualize myself to be liked. and that if im not sexualy appealing then nobody will like me) so here i am the only chick there...and wondering just WHAT percentage of furries are of what orientation (ive taken notice that all onine furry communities ive been to are predominantly gay also) it was kinda nice to see so many openly happy gay people..cause usualy they have to feel repressed and hidden and im glad there is a fandom and a community of people that they feel they can be open and themselves around. there was even a married gay couple and i thought that was so cool <3 GO THEM!!
but back to what i was asking/saying
am i correct in my assumption that most furries are gay?? is there something about our culture that just appeals to gay people??
i find this subject really curious as i am pansexual and i find that i dont see alot of straight furries now that i think about it. does our culture encourage sexual openess?? or is that just the kind of people we attract??
or do you think im tottaly off my rocker and that it has nothing to do with furry.
DISCUSS!

Ive noticed this too. I think its how accepting the furry community is, it attracts them.
-
I agree with Macid, plus, maybe they were bisexual? Or were they certainly gay, because I know more people are bisexual than gay~
Plus, it's probably because furries and gays are both awesome :3
-
I've come to notice this as well, I actually had a short struggle in my sexuality (which I resolved to me being straight), but it does seem to be pretty common. That originally was one of the reasons I never told people I was a furry, because I thought most people would think I was gay, and I guess it makes sense. I've always wondered though why so many male furries were gay. :S
-
Hmm, I haven't had a lot of experience of the furry community, only just exploring talking to others, so I don't know. However, from what I've seen around the forums it seems like a lot of people are bisexual or gay. Personally, I see myself as pansexual like yourself :)
xx
-
speaking as a great big gay myself, i joined the furry social scene because the gay social scene is just a wish-wash of pretty uninteresting people. the furry scene is a wish wash of usually interesting people of hugely varying sexualities. most of the fandom is actually bisexual from my experiences.
-
I think it varies but the gay percentage IS generally higher because of lack of social constraints. Of course you also have people calling themselves bisexual just to look "edgy"
-
From what ive seen most of the furs i know in rl are bisexual men.... the female ones usealy tend to be heterosexual. furry fandom is male dominate. ive dont know why the furry fandom attracts so many people who are homosexual, but my best guess would be that it is because it is so accepting. I do remember when i accept that i wasn't heterosexual that i was pansexual and no one trolled me for it. From some online study's it dose show that our culture is about equal for heterosexual to non heterosexuals ( 51% hetro 49 % non) http://www.klisoura.com/ot_.

Yeah, I've seen this topic come up here before. I believe it's just because the furry community is the very accepting so people don't think they need to hide their sexuality. I think there are actually a lot of straight furs but they probably just don't have any focus on them because everyone is so amazed by how many openly gay furs there are.
Also, this question is partly why the topic polling people about their sexuality was made here: http://www.thefurryforum.com/forums/index.php?topic=15426.0

^ This. :P
Straight furs exist, and not a small number of them either. There's just a larger percentage of noticeably bi/gay people in the furry fandom than people usually see in the general population. People find it odd because of that difference, so it draws more attention that the straight portion of the fandom.
-
I thought I was the only one that noticed this; I hardly ever see straight furs.
-
I've seen a lot of gay furs so far...
-
i dont wish to presume that all male furries are gay..but it seems that i dont know any male furries that are straight either (they are either gay or bi)
and yeah. ive noticed that females are predominantly straight in the furry fandom too..>>.....THIS NO MAKE SENSe!
-
*Raises hand* Uh . . . straight here. Maybe we could get to know eachother so you know at least one.

There's at least 44 of them on this forum according to the poll. So they're probably just not noticed as easily if you aren't seeing them. :P
-
Straight here as well. I will have to agree with WingedZephyr on this one. Of all I have talked with(I will admit that the number is not huge) it seems like it was a 50/50 split between gay and straight, you just don't notice those who are straight as often.
-
i think we should leave it up to "who knows??"
-
i will say... in every single furry survey that i've ever seen the results for (one organisation does one every summer), the sexuality graph shows that bisexuals rule the roost by an overwhelming majority. gays come a distant second, and straights are in a minority... i think with the pan and asexuals. and i think the only reason there aren't any more pansexuals in this world is because barely anyone knows what it means.
not that i'm defending surveys in general cause they're a pretty rubbish representation of the reality of our world, but unfortunately they're the best we have asside from our own sights and sounds
-
Imma straight male fur, that makes... 3 of us so far? Here is a survey, its a few years old though, that I found on wikipedia. The numbers are probably different by now, but it gives a pretty good understanding of the majority of sexual oriantations of furries.
"According to a study, 19–25% of the fandom members report homosexuality, 37–48% bisexuality, 30–51% heterosexual, and 3–8% other forms of alternative sexual relationships. In 2002 about 2% stated an interest in zoophilia, and less than 1% an interest in plushophilia."
Since this is a place free of judgement, most homosexual furries would be able to be open about it where as straight furries dont feel the need to. Thusly we mostly only here the homosexual voice on things. atleast, thats what makes sence to me anyway. :/
-
im strait to. (i think) for the most part any way agian (i think still working on that)
-
yeah, so far on this forum, I've meet a lot of gay furs but it's cool as I guess gays are oftenly more open-minded than others. XD
either way, im straight
-
And it honestly isn't that much of a big deal. As long as I think you're a cool person, I don't care what your sexual orientation is.

makes a lot of seance. as ive seen people do tend to be more open about who they in the fandom.
-
I think also, the fandom does broaden alot of aspects for people, like seeing how open it is, It can encourage members to try new things and thus change their orientation. It also may serve as a refuge from those who are repressed in real life from their sexual preference.
-
To be honest, I remember back in the day when furry was just starting to become well known, back then it was mostly gay and I had a field day but now it actually seems as if everyone's straight. Way more females then there used to be as well.
I'm gay, and I'd like to go to whatever con you went to. ;D

Same here, so long as people are cool and easy to talk to, and most are here, then I dont much care what they are. People's personal lives are their own. B)

it wasnt a con, it was a fur-meet

well, i guess people are busy so the straights were busy too
-
I know we've talked via messenger since the meet, but I still feel obligated to post.
I was at the meet, I'm comfortably straight, and I thought it was a bit too forward of you to ask everyone's sexual orientation. It was within a half hour of meeting everyone, I try not to slap too many labels onto new acquaintances unless they're putting those labels out there openly.
Also, my friends and I were in the middle of playing Fluxx when you asked, and I decided to say something witty and steal your thunder. I'm sure some people in the group were attracted to you, they just weren't going to lavish you with attention when conversation/meals were to be had. Just as there's that split between straight and gay/bi male furs, there's a split between female furs as well: loud and "everyone needs to know I'm furry and have boobs" vs. quiet and reserved. I usually prefer the latter.
-
Personally, I usually don't pay attention to people's orientation unless they tell me what it is. I try to assume that, just because they are furry, doesn't automatically gay/bisexual. I do know many furs and yes, most are either bisexual or gay (Myself included). But it doesn't change my perception that, just because someone's a part of this affinity, doesn't automatically make them bi or gay.
But that's just my opinion :P.

The following comment is in NO way meant to be an insult to anyway, so if anyone takes it that way, then I apologize in advance.
I believe another reason why there seems to be a ton of gays/bisexuals in the fandom is because straight people don't really "advertise" (not the best word, but it's the only one I could think of, thus why I was worried about offending people) that they're straight. I think it's more common for gay/bisexual people in the fandom to state their sexuality.

I can see/agree with that. It's a fandom so completely accepting of ANYTHING that it's a bit easier to be open about what you like. Whatever you're into or however you are, you can probably find someone to connect with. Also, it seems like there's a larger number of gay/bisexual males who are comfortable with multiple partners, versus a lot of straight furs who want to be in a secure relationship. Thus, the number of "available" female furs is drastically smaller that the number of "available" male furs, meaning it's much easier for gay/bisexual males to find what they're interested in.
I once met someone who went to Anthrocon not because he considered himself a furry, but grew interested in it due to his tastes in bears (in the lifestyle sense), and one of those bears considered himself a furry. So he found his niche, even if he was attending for primarily sexual purposes, and I know how much cons tout themselves as "No, we put all the sexual stuff off in a corner where nobody sees it, we're family friendly".
-
I have also found that, due to the small amount of 'available' female furs, it can get quite cut-throat among the straight male furs. Like I have to deal with my mate getting constantly hit-on and flirted with by other furs. But it's just one of those things. Yeah It happens in society anyway, but not half as much I feel as it happens in the fandom.
It can be very hard being a straight male in the fandom, I mean my friend recently turned bi and was looking for a girlfriend. but there was none that were available, so he started to try and chat-up girls who were taken, which can be very dangerous. I mean, I'm not a violent man, and I don't really care about it as I can trust my mate, obviously if it happens at a meet and I'm right there, and ALL he is doing is trying to get with my mate I will tell him to go shove it, you know. But there are other furs who are a lot more aggressive than me and will retaliate if they find out about such actions.
So i think a lot of Bi males just think it's easier and safer to go for a guy.
-
Yes I must agree with you. every furry iv meet has been a gay guy. I for one am straight. And ive hardly even meet a actual women in the chat rooms. And to think i read that most of the fandom were women. Thanks wikipidea >.>
-
See, the thing is, there are quite a few women, just hardly any single ones and they wont likely be in many chat rooms, mostly on the art sites and such-like :3
-
In sharp contrast to the lack of attention she got at the meet, I'm often surprised by how aggressive straight male furs get when they think they have a chance with a female. Even if they're already taken, some guys just can't take no for an answer. Maybe it's being persistent or not understanding when they've gone too far.
I really don't try to actively look for anyone within the fandom, there's usually far too much drama, and if the relationship goes sour you have to deal with seeing them on whatever sites/at whatever cons you met them at. I suppose the same could be said for "normal", non-fur relationships, except you might then have this flood of potential male suitors (not fursuiters) suddenly bombing their FA with consolation and cute snuggly emotes.
