Well since I have finally decided on a name I thought I'd throw a poll up due to the diverse amount of names I have seen on this forum.
If you found it or referenced it where specifically did you find it I would love to hear.
Anyways I found mine in a couple of places. On some hack tools,one on a psp game save, and on a game case. I always thought the name sounded kinda cool.
I looked up the word and found out its german and depending on the context can mean mind,spirit or ghost. It has a whole bunch of other meanings too though.
Anyways can't wait to hear from others.

I got my name way back when me and my friend were playing Legend of Mana for playstation. I needed a name for my character and he suggested Macid, because it had the word mace in it. I am a fan of club weapons so I took it and have been using it as one of my aliases ever since.

I end up with a blog of some randy named Michael Geist,2 wikipedia articles,magazine web page and a whole bunch of other stuff lol.

My main fursona's name is my own name. The rest of my character names I used a website for baby names...I wanted the names to mean something and with the website I used you can search for a name with a particular meaning, so that's what I did for my characters.

Well WhiteTiger is pretty self explanitory given my fursona, but the 89 is my birth year; 1989. Almost all of my screen names have had numbers at the end, so now it's pretty much a tradition. :P

Feral comes from an hobby I used to have. Tho you could think that it's because Feral is... feral, rather than anthro. But nope, that's not the origin :P
The nickname 'Timmy' is my real life nickname as well and is based on my real name, not much to say about it...
Then the last name, Fox, is just basicly a reference to the fact that I'm a fox, nothing too special hehe.

I referenced my own name from a dream I had with a wild white wolf with dazzling blue eyes and in the dream felt this need to keep it safe. So I decided on White Wolf Guardian, in a way it's my creation though I don't like to take full credit. Also on google images, several of my commissions from artists are often the first things that show up, there's a youtube artist that goes by White Wolf Guardian I believe as well (not me), there's a "Wolgan Valley Resort" vacation place somewhere, and there's many "White Wolf" named characters that I learned about over the years. The reason I never changed my display name is partially for two reasons. If I changed "wolf" to "wolgon" it would be over the forum limit of 20 characters and I just like to keep it simple. Originally my fursona was just a white wolf.

I though of the name originally for my first Pokémon game (Leafgreen) and it sortof rolled off the tongue so I use it in most of my alliases. When I googled it I figured out a video game reviewer uses it :/ . There's also a guy who teaches meditation whom has it as a last name.
It's pretty original I guess.

I got my name by taking part of a character's name from a BBC show (Drake). And then when I adopted my foxaroo fursona somebody called me Kangadrake so Kangadrake I remained :3

I accidentally voted for "Referenced" because I thought my name was still (specter) (it used to be my name on this forum) -- I can never remember I changed it to Shakat for some reason. So can someone change my vote to the second option "Original" please?
Anyway, "shakat" is a portmanteau of cat and shark, because that's what my species it. :3

I wanted something that sounded original but still had some meaning to it. So I ended up spending like an hour going through different translators with different words that are similar to my fursona. I went through a lot of words in alot of languages until I finally translated icy to latin and got gelidus. I loved using the word icy to describe my fursona, but I wasn't insanely fond of the translation. But it was better than anything esle that came up. Finally I gave in and decided on Gelidus, and ever since I've made that decision I've only gotten happier about it.

Well, mine is just my first name with "Fox" after it, but my more original name (Henix/Henixify) are made from where I was creating an account on steam, I was playing GOW and I saw "Marcus Phenix" and I took the "P" out of his last name, and the "Henixify" is me just adding a "ify" to it :3

Well I actually named my fursona after a young Russian mouse name Fievel Mousekewitz. The first part at least. The second part is in reference that I am a tanuki, more raccoon, but I went with tanuki since I've seen a few people with raccoon as the surname. When I googled my name I got a couple hits on these forums, commissions, and A LOT of food places including General Tanuki's food and dining, Tanuki Tavern and Tanuki Sushi Bar.

Righteousbro isn't a reference to anything really but it is just words strung together. My 'sona's name is Ekuamahtava which is words from other languages strung together. I suppose the combinations are original though which is why I voted so.

I made my name up honestly. Its really to idol my dog cause hes my Buddy. ;) Then I learned that there were others and I am not the only Buddywolf. Buddy is actually quite a common name. Its funny. Anyway, I added wolf at the end because it sounded cool to me. Now because its used by many, im itsbuddywolf, thebuddywolf, buddywolf, buddywolf232, and so much more on a lot of sites. It can really confuse a few people

Well, if you google "Dander", you will undoubtedly find piles of sites about shedded cat fuzz. But it's really how I shortened Dandreline, which when googled only turns up my own stuff, surprisingly. It came from the name of a fluffy white kitten in some old movie I can't remember, whos name was something I didn't know how to spell or quite how to pronounce but it sounded so cute that I did my best at making a word out of it and it became my fursona's name. Now some other furries call me a dandelion, for some silly reason. :/ XD
As for the last name, that came more recently, when I was adopted into Jadis and Niala's family.

For some reason most of the names i could come up with included the color of my fursona, and fyreblue sounded nice and it reminded me of the brightish-neon colors i used in the coloring. I also liked the ring it had with fox, and so created Fyreblue Fox.

with me my name is a reference to when i joined the fandom ( in winter) as well as one of my Favorite colors ( icy blue), my secondary fursona Storm is a caracter from a story i really felt like was like me. ( yes hes an antrho cat in the story as well)

Well, I'm weird and I like cats, so I chose the name Crazycat. Which I learned is a common name on the internet, so if you see another Crazycat (or any variation thereof), it may or may not be me.

Actually, Scar comes from all the things I lived in my past. I went through hard times and I realized that those events could heal but they would always leave a scar pshychologicly on my soul, ready to bleed again at any time. But thee's also a double meaning to that as it also represents my strenth to have survived those events that made me be who I am today.

first of, yes "Dream" has a capital "D" and it's not seperated because I wanted it to be like that. White represents my favorite color. Dream represents my love for the progressive metal band "Dream Theater" ... But deeper into phylosophy, it actualy represents the fact that I can't remember my dreams but only nightmares... that's why My second name is fully together... It represents the good dreams in my life I will never be able to remember... And the D is in capital to represents the big part of dreams in psychological evolution...

My Fursona name was originally a login name for MMORPGs and it wound up sticking as something I would be called.

Most of my names are referenced, a word or name from another language, using either translation sites or babynames.
Nevan's a name meaning 'Little Saint' as he's one of my 'good' characters, wholesome and innocent, and I guess I wanted something of celtic origins due to the nature of his world. Morgan's just a fitting last name that goes well with Nevan by sound, I didn't look it up. I also sometimes just use 'Nevan Fox', which is the obvious.
Before Nevan was Akisame, which means 'Autumn Rain'. It's a word, but is sometimes used as a name, usually by girls. I wanted to give him a more feminine name, but still one that sounded cool. He's a kitsune, and I tried to create a fitting personality for him. Always attempting to be effeminate and proper, but with undertones of barely restrained mischief, though describing himself as 'benevolent'.
I had a character named Zarek for awhile, I just found it on babynames and didn't realize how close it was to Sarek from Star Trek, or used in Battlestar Galactica or Marvel Comics. You could say he was a prototype for Nevan, actually. They're both inventor types with the tiniest bit of magic helping them out.
My first furry character had two names, as he was an alien staying on earth. His 'alien' name was completely original, and I was working on a complete language for his world. His earth name was Japanese, and was an approximate translation of my full name into Japanese.
Edit: I forgot Odyssey. Odyssey is a Grey Fox, quirky, with a time/space/dimension travelling ship called the Doohickey. (kinda Dr. Who-ish, though not like from an alien race of people with such technology, and I generally take his adventures very light-heartedly). He got his name when I was reading about 'The Fool' Major Arcana Tarot card, and the concept of 'The Fool's Journey'. I haven't done much with this character, but I like to play him as a bouncy explorer who likes to take chances - probably more Ms. Frizzle than Dr. Who.

I've always loved Russian names, anytime a video game asks for a character name I would call them Alexei so I'd been using it a lot before I made my fursona.
His last name which I don't mention very often is Álvares, My grandparents were portuguese and that was my grandmother's maiden name so I thought it kinda fit.

Lunaris Parukia is a character originally supposed to spoof Sonic the Hedgehog character Solaris.
Lunar is the opposite of solar, so it became Lunaris.
I realized this name was common, and decided to pick another name.
Since Solaris was a god of time, I took the name of the Pokémon Palkia, the god of space, and finally came up with Palkia's Japanese name, Parukia.
I later figured out that Lunaris is Latin for lunar.
As for my fursonas, Luna Rising the Light came from the Latin "Luna", meaning "Moon".
The first three letters in "Rising" following "Luna" spells "Lunaris".
Since Luna's role in the test fic was to spoof Mephiles the Dark, I came up with "the Light".
Mephistopheles Lucifer R. Iblis' name comes from the names of demons, and he was the direct result of a slight childhood trauma.
I don't know what that "R" stands for, though.
Coming up with names is one of the most fun things about creating a character.
Sometimes I even come up with a name first, and then create a fitting design/background.
Sometimes I use portmanteaus such as Devile (Devil, vile, evil and defile), words in other languages such as Luna (moon), simply English words such as The Haunt, sometimes I think up random stuff like Dark Zereon, sometimes from an already existing name, and only rarely I use normal names, although these names are often puns, like how Cecil Etrity is an anagram for "electricity", or Lucy Fur sounds like "lucifer".

NeeChee was branched off the name my grandad used to call me. He used to call me Chichi. I thought that wuz cute, but neechee just sounded cuter to me, and then it just kind of stuck. NeeChee also kept on coming back to me during the meditation of finding my spirit animal, which is also where i got my coyote fursona came from ^^

I put down "Original" but it's kinda both referenced and original. The name came from a previous human RP character I created; a sort of Tidus-like personality that carries a bladed shield as a weapon. I came up with the name by just mixing letters together and trowing them against the wall. About 137 names later, I ended up with "Zhono Veranhaut" and it stuck.

Mine's sort of referenced. I wanted my first name to have something to do with the whole dragon fursona. I looked up the greek word for Dragon and up popped "Drakos." The name seemed to fit and it seemed catchy so that's what I've gone by ever since. My last name I came up with myself recently, and I thought of it I guess just associating fire with dragon. I'm not sure where the word "Dark" came from, but it just seemed to fit in my eyes :P.

I used "Rio Maikah Thor." As my vote, I created it. Ninjalion is his nick/codename.
When I first came onto these forums, I was originally known as "Rain." Which was a Black Panther. I found that. But everything about "NinjaLion." I came up with without any knowledge that it was taken.

oh well in that case i go by sigma and tallick. cuz i ish speacal and have two fusonas. i created them both....i think. some one else might have them two. i got sigma to represent my normal everyday life. tallick represents the burning fury that a have for some reason. i supose from stress cuz of the court and change of custody. any way thats a different story for a different time

Now that my fursona has changed I might as well mention the new one. Aurelis was a name I made up awhile back for character names in the book I'm writing, and I became attached to it so I gave it to a new fursona that was developing behind the scenes of my brain. The root comes from the word "aura", which is her nickname.

Mortis = Latin for dead.
Reptus = Latin for lizard.
Mortis.Reptus = Dead lizard.
Which just so happens to be what my characters who represent me are.
More specifically, my sona's name Rigor Mortis is obviously referenced from one of the stages of post mortem. c:

'yayzi' - i created. originally a typo i meant to say 'yay' but i said 'yazy' and liked that but then eventually made it 'yayzi' which just stuck
'fyrus' - the name of a boss from a zelda game, twilight princess. 3 years ago i used to go by 'zaelren' but then i wanted a new name and so i chose 3 names of bosses from zelda, asked friends which one they thought fit me, and they all said fyrus so i stuck with that and i honestly prefer that name over yayzi LOL. 'fyrusome' is just fyrus + awesome/fearsome idk i like how it sounds for some reason
'nyctonecro' is a dumb name i wish i could get rid of but its my email and webs url and username on a lot of sites so im sorta forced to keep it. nycto is latin for night, necro is latin for dead.
'rodenticide' is the name id like to replace nyctonecro it just means killing rodents / rats which fits my sona since shes a dead rat thing

Well, Belirahc was created during one D&D campaign. I was playing a Drow wizard with a penchant for using fire spells. Using a Drow name generator I found in an old Dragon Magazine, I came up with Belirahc, which was Dragon's Fire in the table. I took this as my handle online as well, and I have come to identify with this as my scaly self, as my fursona is a dragon. Just seemed to come together pretty much on it's own. :3

That And After The Greek God Of The Sea, As Well As The Planet ^_^ . So I Guess Mine Is Referenced From A Number Of Things, And I'm Really Happy With It.

My name was derived from not any source other than the mind. It honestly bears no meaning, and initially I was averse to it; but over the months it has grown on me. You see, I was conversing with my ex in late January whether I should announce my return to the fandom or not; she was rather persuasive and convinced me. So for the next four days, we spent our time deliberating what my name should be. For years, I had chosen the name Shade or Shadow; but those both seemed too cliche.
So, as the final discussion choices came to be, I was left with either Sytex or Tyson; in the end I chose the more unique of the two. And I can firmly say it is infinitely embedded in my head to be a name I might respond to.

Mine is a reference to something at the Academy. For the past year, a family of foxes have made their home in the cadet area. The main part of the cadet area is called the Terrazzo, or shortened to T-zo, so we called them T-zo Foxes. My first name is Tyler, so I just put that in for T and I had Tyler Zofox. I thought it was clever.

At first I called myself asiabunny, which is a stupid name. I'm asian, I'm a bunny, wow ain't that clever? Anyway, I was doing an RP and needed a second name that wasn't Bunny... Kali sounded good. It stuck. Yusufzai is the group of people I originate from. Look it up people. :)

I came up with my characters name, Hunter, wich a friend of mine suggested after i told him i bow n arrow, and being in the wild, so it came to be ^_^

i was thinking of a name a posh person or a duke would say and my mind thought up maggintons i think it's also a typo of a word i heard before i dont know what it means...but by what i heard ever since i made the name it ain't a good word even if it is a bad word im gonna keep it...the name has become my idenity and im not gonna lose it :|

My best friend told me to name my weirdo hybrid Pandy after the name she gave her Bayleef in SS. I think it may be a reference, but I ended up falling in love with it either way. c:
