Title: so... many... foxes...
Post by: Daemon on June 15, 2011, 12:43:58 AM
Something I noticed is that in the fandom, there are JUST SO MANY FRICKEN foxes. YOu can't take a step in the fandom witout someone going "I'm Mistah Fox" or "I'm FoXXXy" or "Foxxy Lady" or some strange thing or another.

IT GETS SO REPETITITVE!!!!

It kinda gets boring to meet new people if their fursona's ARE ALL THE SAME! >:[
People need to get more creative about there fursona's. You never meet someone whos a, i dunno, ...a... Giant Squid. you only ever meet foxes.

Wolves and felines also fall under this category, however, not as much.

I do not mean to be mean, but this is the truth. I'm sorry if i hurt anyone's feelings with this, i just had to get it off my chest.

I once heard of a plant/refrigerator fursona. Yet to see one though. But I have seen some more interesting "species".

wolves foxes and cats are just so darn cute though X3 but I know what you mean. In an effort to "individualize" myself, Ive gone through 2 changes in my fursona. Id place money im the only diamond Lynx out there. In any case, I think people just really like them.

Everybody likes foxes.  Someone once told me that they are like the blondes of the fandom (in the sense that everybody likes them, not they are dumb).  But I believe that a fur is allowed to be whatever they want.

No it's clear that there are many foxes. On my list over what I've seen, it's canine on first, fox on second, feline on third.

Yes  alas you cant go anywhere without runnun into a fox or a grey wolf...personaly i think its fine so long as they customize it and really do something uniqe with it.

I've seen more fox hybrids then simple foxes myself. I've seen more wolves then anything else I think. This does upset me because seems people choose wolves because they are 'cool'. The same is true with foxes and domestic felines, only they are 'cute' rather than cool. It makes my fursona feel less special because I'm such a unique individual, but a wolf fits my personality so well. Pack mentality, cunning, teamwork for a certain goal, life long partners, and cold environments. All of these things fit toward me extremely well. So, it kinda bothers me too, because I don't want to be categorized as 'just another wolf, or wolf hybrid'.

Aside from the "cuteness factor", I think a large part of it has to do with the fact that canines, foxes, felines, and dragons even, are the animals people are most familiar with and know the most about. They've been a major part of folklore, always recognizable, and generally are much easier to match with a personality because of all that.

It's easy to think of wolves and think "pack mentality, strong, etc." It's easy to think of foxes and think "cunning, resourceful, etc." It's easy to think of cats and think "independent, playful, etc." But it's not so easy to think of what a squid thinks and acts like. It's difficult for people to know where to begin when describing the personality of an ibex or a tarsier. There's millions of fantastic creatures and species, but most people just aren't familiar enough with the animals to even know anything about them sometimes, let alone feel a connection with them.

So... combine all that with the fact that "everyone else is doing it", and there you go.

well before i got into the fandom or even knew about it, i picked a fox as a animal that represented me but before that i was a dragon. Now im trying to combine it into a foxdragon (its been done before im sure but oh well)
@_@ i thought only wolves are repetitive but little did i know that foxes are just as bad

We furries have grown up with wolf, and fox, and feline furries. They are the furries you see in video games, books, and cartoons, and they make really good looking anthros.

If people like foxes, I don't mind at all!
My fursona is a wolf because I love the creatures so much. I'd rather have a fursona that I connect with, than something 'unique' but doesn't fit me at all.

I kinda agree there.

To be honest, I barely knew anything about foxes before, more than what they looked like and that they existed.. yet I chose fox becuase I found them cute and I somehow felt I would fit as one.
As well do I, even today, get fox on most "which species are you" quizzes. So I'm quite happy with being one :3
Nowdays, I usually say that I have some bond or such to foxes.

Then for originality, foxes may be far from the most 'original' species within the fandom, but I'm still way more detailed and personal with my fursonas appearance than I've ever been with my own.
And as well, I do have quite a few properties that makes me quite unique from other foxes. At least in my opinion :P

Zephyr went all psychoanalysis on us!
But she is right, a lot of it has to.do with already associated ideas about the animal, and its popularity. My fursona is a fox-cat, so I'm just combing two popular ones for a little more of a indviual than just the same ol' same old.
Title: Re: so... many... foxes...

Yeah there is a lot of them, maybe most of the people are just lazy and don't feel like spending time to come up with anything so they choose that. I'm a house cat/shark hybrid but I relate to house cats the most so I have a good reason for choosing it. And I actually spent time figuring out my fursona. But there are probably some foxes who actually really are a fox at heart and didn't just choose it to choose it.

everyone has made valid points. it just gets tiresome. and it's kinda hard to believe that some thousand people see themselves as a fox. I'm a Polar Bear, not only because I chose it, but because I am rather large, and enjoy swimming, but am no longer as streamlined as I was when I used to be a otter.

well if no one is noticing... horses are getting really popular *blames my lil pony*
so foxes probably wont be mainstream in a couple years i think people are learning and are broadning there horrizon

Brendyn, the fandom is still young its what only 30 some years maybe *not counting all of history, just recent* it really is branching off into other species. You just dont notice cause all the foxes are still popular
give it time

When I first started meeting furs online I used to feel so out of place because I was a reptilian. In fact, I'm been on here for so long, I believe I was one of the first reptilians on here, lol. I used to also try and mix or use fur characters so I wouldn't feel out of place when I was new, but they never felt right and I'd always revert to something scaly again. I can see how you get frustrated with it because it seems like wolves and foxes are a dime a dozen, but in all honesty, what Zeph says it true. I only get super frustrated when it comes to things like SecondLife or something where there's like 39073485 wolf and fox avatars and hardly any good reptilian avatars. Either way, it's good to have something you're in tune with even if it is common.

I am a wolf-cat hybrid...not because it's popular but because the wolf is my spirit guide, the cat is my best friend and the easiest for me to relate to, and there is a tiny amount of horse blended in...notice the mane and if you could see me move I have all horse like gaits, all because these animals reflect me best.  0:)

I have to agree with WZ and say its mostly the things that most people know the most about, but at the same time I think I see way more odd hybrids of animals, myself included as a cat-snake (or cake), than just typical run of the mill foxes wolves etc etc etc. I think this part is having to do with the larger stigma of "I HAVE to be an individual. I can't do anything else thats been done." etc again. For me, Kin I actually saw in a dream and when I first saw him he was closer to a komodo dragon but slowly evolved and stayed at a cat snake.

Lets face it, foxes are just too cute to pass over XD, wolves have that sense of regality and strong community, cats are laidback and crafty (andwerereveredasgodsbytheancients).

But the above statement is just reiterating WZ^^

People pick animals they like, foxes are more common. Its kind of rude to consider something boring because they are "repetitive". Just becuase not everyone likes "polar bears", would it be considered lame or weird? Its the same concept.

XP Guess Im guilty here being a Toxic Fox. Truth be told Ive love foxes since I was a child. When I got older I fell in love with rave and I guess I ended up combining the two. Soon my military mindset and love of green was mixed in to the image and well my fursona took form. I truly didn't realize how many foxes there were out there but then again when you live in a small town like bradenton you rarely find another Fur.

There are a lot of foxes, but it's okay. People want to be what they want to be.

I'm a dragon/leopard/peacock prancing around in a N. Korean soccer jersey because I want to be. Plus, I have strong connections with the animals I chose for my fursona.

mine was originally made to look just like me visually and emotionally but just not human that's why he has a eye patch (i am half blind) and looks very young and innocent (im only 14 and i am a overall good person who gets bullied) the other reason i made him look so cute and fluffy was to make other furs feel pity for me being bullied (i was even stabbed.....)

maybe most peoples first fursona is a fox and they either do one of two things, grow out of the fox stage and get a new animal OR make a hybrid like what KangaDrake did and i think hes the only roo/fox i know of. You get some interesteing creatures when people make hybrids.

Try to look beyond the species; what're they like? What are their hobbies? Hair? Clothes? Eye colour? Build?

Additionally, "feline" is a broad spectrum. What kind of feline? Cheetah? Serval? Lynx? Housecat? I mean, I'm a housecat, but I suppose my "originality" point is the fact I like being turned into stuff! I used to be a bit more static (Granted, I always seem to end up back to a housecat anthro :p), but my point is, there's a lot more you can look at instead of shaking your head and switching off the minute you see "Fox", "Cat" or "Wolf".

I knew to stay away from foxes when I made my fursona. So I chose a Husky because I feel as if that breed is somehow similar to my personality. I don't care to much about other people not being too original,  but when I look around and see ridiculous hybrids like dragon mice, or Cat Dragons (IDK, I just pulled those off the top of my head), I think they thought, "You know what would look cool? __________(Insert weird hybrid here)_____________"

Disney you say? good thing its practically on my doorstep, which in turn means I'm close to several furry cons wooo!

Probably the loneliest thing in the fandom to be is a shapeshifter that is a member of a species extinct in the wild.

Yes, I am a shapeshifter with a normal setting, even lonelier.  To make it worse, I'm an American Indian (Osiyo!) of the Tsalagi nation, that's half Scottish (Lookin a wah bit glaikit sonny!)

That means I deal with stereotype after stereotype, the first, being a dinosaur, means everyone would see me as a power lusting maniac. Specifically, because I am a Spinosaurus, some might see me as being a stupid fanboy of Jurassic Park who believes Spino was bigger than rex and would win in a fight. (HINT: They're wrong :P )

Secondly, the American Indian stereotypes of being a "redskin" savage that leaves in tipis and wears gigantic headdresses.  Nope, just a Cherokee here.

Thirdly, the Scottish stereotypes of being a violent guy with a lusting for haggis.

Fourth(ly?), the shapeshifter stereotype of being untrustable, a shady, shifty type.  WEEE!!!

Yeah, its something, ain't it?

Well they are uncommon indeed. I feel atleast I'm a tad uncommon among my fellow foxes. Heh I never stopped and thought about how common we are. I tried to come up with a new fursona or atleast a new look but it just didn't feel right. I'm a Toxic fox and quite proud to be that. My friends even said I seemed like a mix between a Bear and a Lion, but it felt empty and forced.

The furdom is an alternative subculture, right? Right. So it is only... expected to find this kind of people within it. And let's face it - most furries are rather young.

So when you grab a handful of open minded, young alternative kids, the chances are that you'd find a lot more people with alternative clothing or styles, more people that listen to metal, etc., than you would if you just grabbed a handful of kids with no filter.

Thing is that many "alternative, open-minded kids", especially male, tend to be of the energetic, cute kind that sometimes thinks of themselves as a bit sly or secretive (because they're more than what meets the eye, or they have a "troubled past" or whatever their reason might be.. which is also much more likely to find in this group of people).

And thus... you find a lot of foxes because the filters needed to get to the furdom, lets through a lot of these people.

On top of that foxes are extremely popular (along with wolves) in mythical stories and are also quite prominent throughout many cultures' histories.  With those stories come stereotypes of the sly, quick and crafty fox.  Everyone wants to be the cutest and baddest, right?  ;D

I spent years going through "fursona"s until I finally discovered stoats (ermines or short-tailed weasels).  For those youngin's just starting out with foxes it's likely that they'll figure themselves out eventually.

That is, at least, my hypothesis on the subject.
basically what your saying is most furries start off as bullied fourteen year old kids with a opposite opinion to the majority of the world population......yeeah i guess im kinda like that......but another reason is the fact im more attracted to people who are cuddly and fluffy why else am i always on the free hugs roleplay thread

and yes i was a black fox until someone said it looked like a black cat and i saw a girl who's fursona was a Tigertaur that looked just like mine

But that only supports my hypothesis, that people with your background (etc.) are more likely to fit the fox profile.

Quite simply, many kids in the furry community think, act, and enjoy things along the same lines. So it is reasonable to believe that they would pic very similar fursonas (foxes). Am I right Puncia? or was I off in left field?

On another note, look at all the stuff that has anthropomorphic characters starred in it: StarFox (Fox, Krystal), Sly Cooper (Carmalita Fox), and... and... darn I forgot the third  one :S, but I'm pretty sure it's out there!

There are a TON of fox (and fox-like) idols and heroes and fictional character, yeah. Crash Bandicoot reminds me of a fox even though he isn't. And there's Todd from The Fox and the Hound, Robin Hood... But I digress.

And you're quite spot on there. If we forced the entire planet to choose one species as their "fursona", we'd have a much wider variety, I'm sure.

:?i think .....sometimes that a fursona is a visualization of your soul.......so a lot of foxes = a lot of naruto's ......if you understand what i mean that is?

but the equation is inaccurate ....this is possibly the most confusing explanation  :S

I never take someone's fursona into consideration when befriending them, so I can't say I get where the OP or anyone else with such feelings is coming from. Why should their fursona factor into how boring or interesting they are when there's an individual behind it with a billion other traits besides "fox" or "genetically engineered moon porpoise," anyway?

People choose their fursona for a variety of reasons and because of a variety of influences, so at best it's questionably accurate when being used to judge character and, in my opinion, also shallow and lazy. It's the subculture equivalent of thinking you're getting real, accurate insight into someone based off of what they're wearing. They might be wearing that shirt because something about the design or logo really touches them or expresses their beliefs, but maybe not in the way you're thinking. Maybe they just like it because it was a gift from someone they love, or they borrowed it from a friend after last night's party where they threw up on their own shirt, or it just wound up in their laundry one day and they didn't particularly dislike it so they started wearing it.

There's tons of interesting creatures and anthros if you just browse for art to look at or ask for book recommendations. :P
