Title: "Source Code"
Post by: Kyriin on May 21, 2011, 01:05:40 PM
So today I saw Source Code and I thought it was pretty mind boggling, left me and my friend confused and trying to figure it out after walking out of the cinema.
Has anyone else seen it? I think I fully understand how it all... goes together. It made no sense in the end but I still think it was a great movie. Anyone here seen it and made any sense of it? I'm probably missing something, but I still thought it was cleverly made!

You may think you've got it until the very end, then your brain may explode like mine. xD

Source Code made perfect sense to me, and I absolutely loved the ending. Any other ending would've killed the movie for me. I can explain it if you want. :)

If you want to, that would be great XD

I got totally confused after Goodwin got the text message at the end. I was just like.. "wait. wut?"

Please put spoilers inside the spoiler code option, for the people who haven't gotten to see the movie yet. :P

So, Source Code deals with quantum physics/quantum mechanics. The most basic theory relevant to the movie being that the past, present, and future are all occurring simultaneously on different levels of reality. Goodwin, Jake, and the rest of us live on the "Present" level. The function of the source code is to allow body dead people (people whose bodies are dead but whose minds/brains are still alive) to briefly enter the "Past" level of reality from someone else's perspective. What the creators of the source code didn't seem to understand was that they weren't just sending Jake back in time, they were sending him into an entirely different reality! So when Goodwin disconnects his brain from the system, his mind is left permanently in the alternate reality.

I'm probably dumbing down the science behind it to an almost insulting degree, but that's as simple an explanation as I can give. Hope the ending makes sense now. :P

I don't think this question is a spoiler, but the answer probably is, so I'll use the spoiler code anyway.

So when he goes back multiple times, is he going back to separate realities each time, or is it all going back to the same one reality?

That's a bit of a tough call.

I would imagine that since he's going back to the exact same place, the exact same time, with the exact same people, he's going back to the same reality. It only becomes a different reality at the end, when he successfully prevents the train bombing.

Wait...

But if he was just in an alternate reality in someone's mind, how did it become actually REAL? :S God this movie confused me so much xD

I get it a little more though.

It only became real inside that alternate reality. The other reality where his life support got cut off, things still continued as normal. Colter died, and Goodwin never got a text message.

Get it? :P

She. didn't? o_O

But she did get a text message at like... the very end? or was that not real as well?

I'm sorry for having half this movie totally fly over my head xDD

She did. In the *alternate* reality. There are two Goodwins. One in the "present" reality where Colter is dead, and one in the "past" reality where Colter's mind ends up. The Goodwin in the *past* reality gets the text message, because Colter sent the message while inside the "past" reality.

It's okay. It can get a little complicated. :P

I'll rent it when it comes out on DVD! :D
I understood most of the movie so I still enjoyed it. Just that darn text message screwed my mind over! D:

Yeah, I can understand that. I just have the freaky ability to perfectly follow almost any movie plot, regardless of how trippy it is. It also helped with Source Code that I had some minimal familiarity with the whole quantum physics/parallel realities thing. :P

I finally got to see it today, man that movie was great o.o. I don't really get why it should be watched over and over again to see things that could possibly be missed, but I loved it. Now for a movie like Inception that would make sense to me :o
