Well well. Just a little backstory to this event:
"As you all know, the Day of Silence was a day to honor those gays and lesbians who dare not speak. However, another group of people have been opressed and shunned have banded together to spread our word of our mistreatment! We are the Furries, a society of golden-hearted people who deviate from normal society with our ways of dressing up in costumes and acting like animals. Well on May 17th I will lead my school's Furry Pride Day observance along with my friends and fellow Furs! Help spread the word of our mistreatment and alienation! On that day we will not speak, and only make the sounds of our animal personas. Spread our word and speak out for us fellow students! For we have been shunned, beaten, and alienated for our choices to deviate from society! Come and support our movement for National Furry Pride Day!"
Buuuut Here's the sad part: Here's my speech to the Furries at my school:
"On this day, Friday May 13th, I have recieved the bad news about Furry Pride Day scheduled on May 17th.
I am truly sorry to announce that it has been canceled due to the 'distracting' influence it has on the school. I have talked with the principle about this event moments (around 11AM) ago and was denied approval for the day we make a silent statement. This breaks my heart and crushes me down as much as it does our supporters (and we had A LOT of supporters) and we feel that we have been denied a victory. We just want to be heard and understood, not ridiculed.
Right now as the self proclaimed leader of my school's Furry Movement I fell absolutely crushed and depressed at this terrible news I had to share. Once again: I am truly sorry"
This really gets me mad. I try for a NONVIOLENT MOVEMENT and I have reason to believe that an utter bigot reported us for nothing. I mean, wtf? All I wanted to do was to spread understanding and tolerance, yet someone strikes us down? This is not fair... What do you think I should do about this?
-
what was the principle's reason for not letting you be silent? for that matter, why do you need his/her permission?
-
"distracting influence" We were also dressing up in our furry costumes that abid by the school's dress code but we were denied. >:(
-
I can see how wearing furry costumes could be interpreted as a distracting influence. Maybe meet them half way and just be silent without cotumes?
-
this seems to me like a violation of First Amendment rights, i mean this is PUBLIC school isn't it?
-
YES! But bull S*** is flying around like infectors in the Ishimura...
-
you probably should confront the school board about this. something similar happened at my school where they denied people the right to start a Wiccan club but approved Bible Club

you do what all non violent protesters do when denied
you do it anyways and accept their consequences without batting an eyelash.

Thanks for the advice everyone! I appreciate the help!

And Im actually the only one with a costume. Even so, its more of a lightweight cosplay suit made from PJs. And I live near Portland Oregon. Guess the city's motto?
"Keep Portland Weird"
Shouldnt the same be true of its suburbs?

sometimes people with authority abused there power. take king henry the eighth for example, even tho he had da power to rule with an iron fist, he abused that power by choping the innocence heads off! couse he was affrade to take the time to understand how people feel.
now your principle for that matter dose not understand what he/she not knowledgeable of. its supposed to be the teachers job to learn from there students as well as the students learning for what they can learn from the teacher.
they are the adults, and adults know its is wrong to push one judgement on to others.
there may be a time when both sides need to take action of diplomacy. or to take matter into there own paws. my advice is to take a diplomatic approach to the situation. but if all else fails then hire an loyer!
hoped that helped :3

Will do! My fursona is a president anyway. Syntex, you there?
-
Your mispronunciation and spelling of my name is actually beginning to get amusing. =P
Either way, we already discussed what shall be done of this biased act. I'm going to type up a formal letter later on today and bring it in with me on Monday. What you explained to me is that his argument was, and still is, wholly contradictory and ironic. I don't see why everyone is so perturbed by furries... It's much more innocent than being homosexual. Hence the latter portion of the word "sexual." Furries need not be sexual; as it is not specifically an orientation of that nature. But to announce homosexuality is to say you'd like to clamber into bed with someone of the same gender and get touchy-feely. Furries just like to consider themselves having a secondary persona that is an animal; what's the big deal?
Don't worry, dude; I'll step up and help you guys out wholeheartedly. Just this time, wait for me to be AT school, rather than run off all hastily and try to get it done instantly.

Hasty Buizel is Hasty... Sorry, runs in the species...

good to see this is working itself out ^_^
-
Hey, people here aint half bad! Bui Bui! I'm staying!
-
may i suggest that you start a partisan?
-
Bui? What's that?
-
i repeat my statement before
any formal letter can and will be rejected.
If your going to be furry and be silent on the 17th, then do it when the 17th rolls around.
If they get angry, hold up a notecard explaining why your silent. If they punish you, take it with a grain of salt and stay silent.
-
nonviolent? no way. this is what you do:
1. assemble a large bunch of pychopathic supporters
2. arm them with large blunt objects
3. crush all who stand in your way
peaceful had its chance. now violence needs a go.
RISE UP! DON YOUR ARMOR AND GRAB YOUR WEAPONS! THE POPULACE SHALL NO LONGER TAKE THIS OPPRESSION! VIVA LA FURRY!

Your awesomeness knows no bounds sir or madame.
But this is a nonviolent protest based on the principles set in place by Gandhi and Martin luther King Jr., violence has its place, but not in making a statement

A simple statement can put what I mean into light; It never hurts to try. I know the school principal well enough to know he's a very business oriented man. If he rejects the letter, big effing deal. Negotiation is always worth a try, and that letter is merely a prelude. I know damn well that with the proper actions taken; the day can and will be allowed. But if things don't go as planned, let it happen anyways. Discrimination is wrong in any form, and I'll help make it known that disallowing FPD is intolerant and discriminate.
I know almost none of you know my prowess for things like this; but Buster can vouch. I'm very good at negotiating.
-
Personally I take a mixed stand to this issue. I like to take the Malom X type "do anything necessary to fulfill a goal" but the Furry way is one of friendship and understanding. If someone gets murdered only for the sole reason that they are Furry then I SHALL DECLARE WAR! >:(
My school has a larger percentage of Furries and Furry supporters than most schools. And I shall do what is right for the sole reason of spreading understanding and tolerance. After all; we have been mistreated and ridiculed, its our God given right to protest peacefully.
-
dude, its time to face the fact that furrys will never be fully accepted in both internet and real life communitys. the only way we are going to ever get equality is by converting them all to the furred side, or beat our message into their tiny brains with large blunt objects, or just contening with the attempt to get people to not hate furries.
note: the last suggestion has been tried, and it failed. but people still try it, and subsequently fail.
-
In the words of Kamina from Gurren Lagann: WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK WE ARE?! Just try and stop me from doing the impossible! Because behind this face is the face of a million souls fighting for what's right. Whose with me?
-

Please do not encourage acts of violence.
-
Violence, rage, and combat does not solve the issue whatsoever; it will only make it worse. It will make us look like crazed fanatics. No matter how much I'd relish the chance to crack some haters' heads, it's not rational.
I'm with Buster; and not just because we're friends. Because he's right. Much better to try the impossible and fail than to tuck our tails between our legs and submit to conformity; no matter if it's been tried already.
-
The Furry way is not one of violence. Its about tolerance. LordFeline, if you only understood the situation then Violence will not solve Violence. I have been studying military history for fifteen years and often the best weapon is the weapon of words. Words have prevented more wars, more senseless deaths, more hatred, and more animosity than any other weapon or act of violence. Think about it.
-
i think everyone here is missing what the principle was meaning
do the silence..just dont go decking out in furry gear..that simple
-
If it was a joke, Lordfeline, you should have tried to make it more obvious like you did earlier.
And Kaprika, I actually told Buster to do what you suggested; Gabag brought up the same point.
-
i feel your pain lordfeline but open war is not always the answer! nor doing nothing about it a good idea
we need to take it to a diffrent approach, and here how!
for anybody who is furry we start a silence protest what we do is we pick a month to do this. the only way we can communicate is by writing in our notebook (except when we talk to our friends in private or at da bank teller) when people hear our silences they will be frustrated then non furrys will follow up on the toils we went through.
this should happen only in groups of 6 or higher only in fursuits or fur accessories only then we should get there attention. unless if anyone got any better ideas
-
We need to start a Furry Tolerance Movement. I vote in! For one month we shall. Get those notebooks ready! Rise Up Fellow Furs!

thank you!
i didnt post this to start a revolution, just as something fun for furs to do to make sort of a point

what would be the point in this?
why should other people have tolerance for us? Some people hardly have tolerance for hardly anyone.
i wish people would understand the problems there lifestyles give them and learn that it will never change, and if it does, it probably wasn't because we made people get over it.
now lets get back to the point of this entire message
"i am furry and i am proud" thats it! its not about anything else >.>
-
yeah, there is no need for a "revolution" here now..we should just be happy being us, why do we need to seek the approval of everyone else???
i love being a furry...yeah it sucks that people sometimes give us crud for it..but so??? thats what being a minority is, it MEANS your different.
so embrace it, theres no need to shove our way of life down peoples throats..just as we dont want them to.
they dont have to accept it..
they dont have to LIKE it
just be you..and thats all

im so mad.....i spent my whole day being silent (what little i had)
my mate was spending the entire time trying to trick me into talking and i didnt fall for it but it was pissing me off after a while
so i decide to sleep the day away cause i was so stressed already and i didnt need his crap...so i wake up at 8:30pm and not even 20 minutes before he is gonna go to bed he tricks me into talking..
IM SO FURIOUS WITH HIS STUPID (insert long innapropriate rant here)
this was a important day for me and he makes it into a stupid game...
-
Good lord, nobody else responded? I was up and gone for the past week or so.
That's not cool, such incessant prodding is bound to piss anyone off. I hope you let him know how much the day meant for you Kaprika; and how much it upset you he'd make it into a game. In the end, the school Principal put his irrational foot down and threatened to suspend Buster and all the furries merely for being furries. I've had it confirmed via recon. Had my friend Trevor go in and ask him why exactly he said what he did, but not like an interview; more like a "what the hell man?" kind of way.
Sadder than that, everyone else backed or bowed down the Monday they went to talk to him; including Buster. I'm still trying to rally at least one of them to talk to the Principal with me; but the way it's looking, I'll have to go in on my own and consult him on this. I know not everyone will accept furries, but I at least should fight for equality and let him know that it is impeding on Freedom of Speech.
-
I didn't even know what came over me that day, normally I'd stand up for what I believe in be the principle got to me. It was a difficult crossroad and I made the wrong choice... Fear just took hold of me.
-
itz never went so well with me ither...
i'd chicken'ed out ok! GOD!!! >:(
-
End result with my talk to the Principal was much different than I expected. Trevor did ask all the right questions, but gave me all the wrong answers. In the end, I established, several times, that all he's trying to do is keep the Fur-Haters (of the few that reside in our school) from getting all pissed and irrational. He has to do it to protect students. It seems a viable enough reason, if you ask me. He said, just like Kaprika did earlier on, that Furry Pride day would be allowed entirely, but no dressing up. And he made it wholly clear that there would be no dressing up whatsoever; as apparently our district dress code prohibits it. And it's not just limited to furs, it goes for any kind of costume. Halloween costume, wearing Priest's robes (from any religion), or anything of similar nature. He even suggested an alternative to gear; just shirts that say "Furry" or "I'm a Furry" or whatever the hell. He also said that we could start a club for furries at the school.
He never said once there was anything wrong with the fandom. He said "It's not normal." That's true; however what is normal? No wonder the argument was filled with holes, the explanations I got were incoherent. I'm an extremely analytical person when conversing, and I found the logic to protect as well as no costumes perfectly reasonable. I admit, it would be nice to have at least the tails allowed, but again; other groups are not allowed similar freedoms. So equality does exist in such a regard; not complaining with the outcome and will try to help set up a Furry Club at the school! Furry Pride Day is not prohibited, nor even inhibited; it will just have to go down differently in the future.
-
Heres my own opinion on pride anything.
All it does is reinforce the concept of separation.
I personally feel its just a matter of allowing society to become co-existant with any thoughts/ideas.
Now I am In no way saying furry pride day is bad so don't get the wrong idea.
As with the distraction thing I can kinda it could get distracting. Even if I had a fursuit I would never trust it to be at my Highschool =\
-
wait, your school has a furry day???
wow, i wish my school had one, i might make it or something...
