I have a simple question, forum:
What is your view upon changing/altering one's fursona?
I know it's a thing people do from time to time and especially "newer" furs might have to in order to be completely happy. But how much is too much? Is there a too much?
What about commissions and earlier artwork of this fursona, what would you feel if the person you drew for changed their fursona some? Before you draw it, while or after?
-
it's hard to say really. but people change their fursonas as they change, if you conqure a fear your fur might change to adapt to this, but i can see what you mean about commisions.
-
Honestly, I don't see a big problem in changing fursonas. But then again, this is coming from an artist who has at the very least two characters she alternates between. Changing a character is not something bad. People change as they get older, and I'm sure their fursona changes accordingly. People have to grow. If the character was significant, however, it doesn't matter if you have changed fursonas, the art or commissions you got should still be meaningful because you can reflect on what was going on in your life or what was important to you through said character, even if they are old. But that's just my opinion or how I view it. Not everyone does this, but there is such thing as a too much.
Too much, to me, is having a different fursona every week. Or just blowing through ideas. I don't have much room to speak because I used to create characters like mad, but I always returned to Rigor / Nyx in time. Some furs have to do this to get a handle on who they are, or who their character is (I did this when I was a newer fur), but it gets old after a while. As far as other people changing, hell, it might sound cold, but the only way it would bug me is if they were changing while I was in the middle of doing a commission for them, I had already done the majority of the work, and they wanted me to make changes accordingly or draw their other "newer" character. Otherwise, they can do what they want. I got the money for my work, they can do what they want with the art so long as they don't claim they drew it, ect.
...BUT. That's just my opinion.

its one of the best parts of having a fursona in my opinion. Being able to change them as you see fit until you find the one you like is awesome.
-
I think before choosing a fursona or a select set of characters for fursonas, it's best to explore all kinds of different ideas, rather than making changes on a weekly/monthly basis.
-
I've been a furry (scalie) for as long as I can remember and in the first couple years my entire species changed untill I found the one that fit me best. Even after that colors and shaped changed a little. It's ok to play with different ideas untill you find out your true fursona, we all go through it.
-
I've never once changed my fursona, but that's more indicative of my personality than anything. Once something clicks, it's clicked for good. :P
-
Just think of it as if you are undergoing a spiritual or mental metamorphosis in your life, sorta like a Caterpillar. We're always growing and changing inside and out, so it's totally cool. Just continue to dazzle us with your presence like always cuz so long as you're happy, that's all that matters. :3 Mow!

I think that changing a 'sona isn't a big deal and I agree alot with what Mortis said. It's more aboutgetting to grips with yourself. I mean I didn't feel right as anything and I was always making little changes or new characters to mess about with. Until I finally got an idea to make my own species and thus came up with the lupex idea. Art is art, and in my opinion it shows the stages of development in a way, how you struggled through different fursonas until you felt right :)
I don't think that there is such a thing as too much, at times I was so reluctant to let go of my creations I had 17 different characters at one point. I still dont let them lie forgotten and some day I'm going to have them all drawn together :)
-
well i think changing a fursona is tottaly normal. your fursona represents YOU...and people change overtime, so naturaly so will the fursona!
as for the commissioned standpoint, what you do after you get your picture is your buisness...but if while the artist is in the middle of drawing soemthing for you, you should let them know while they can still change it. its unfair to them to work so hard on a picture..
then change on them.
cause as an artist...i LOVE seeing my artwork being used, but if you decided to change what you are..im likely never to see it again and the artist knows you dont look at the picture anymore eithere.....to them, it would be like sending off there child to live in a home that doesnt love them.
if your gonna commission someone to draw your fursona...make sure its really waht you want..and that you have the love to dedicate to that picture, cause alot of heart goes into making it.

Geez guys, I wasn't looking for support here, just opinions. XD
Thanks for those anyhow. See, I've been asked by a few people outside the forum for a while and I wanted to know a little more since I'm still new myself.
I have also thought about altering Puncia slightly, however this is my choice. :3

i dont see why some one would ....ive been a wolf since i started and still am thought about changing to a norther type of k9 but couldnt
for some it might be ez i think some people here have 7 different ones
-
Personally I changed mine not too long ago. I guess I'm just trying to figure out who I am at this point. I think I'll stick with the kangaroo though because it sort of fits who I am. If someone changes their fursona that's all right...it only gets annoying if it's like a different one every week :P.
But yeah, I don't see a problem with it. Some people know who they are right away and others it takes some time ;).

i honestly dont know what to do. ive been anoymous for a while. im like completely unknown, unidentified. im trying so hard to finally come up with something that will fit, but its not working. so im just anonymous or unidentified for as ling as i live.

This is a really good question, one that I was also wondering about because I was literally just introduced into this entire furry realm just a few days ago. Brand new! Haha! And instead of thinking about it deeply and reflecting for a while, I just jumped into this forum immediately to check things out for myself...and came up with my current fur. So of course, I do wonder if I should have thought about it extensively before even starting, but...too late for that now, isn't it? X3

You can always change your fursona. When you no longer want to, then youve found the right one :)

I agree with Macid :)

At the moment i'm practicly living three seperate lives, and each mindset has formed it's own fursona. So for me it more depends on if one of my lesser sides is incharge as to what i am
-
i've slightly changed my fursona....i used to be a boring generic red fox....now i'm a meerfox...half meerkat half fox....as Fox was the first thing i went with when coming into the fandom some 7 years ago...but my friend seen me more as a meerkat then a fox....but I had the natural red hair for a fox....and i liked the idea of being a meerkat....so...i did the best of both worlds...a hybrid!! Meerfox (Suricata vulpes)
that's the only chagne i've done to my fursona....because my fursona is me...I am my fursona
my close (RL) friend Miss Black Sheep did my current avatar for me...it's a cropped image of a badge I had commissioned for Furnal Equinox this year...(Awesome con BTW..met my fave male artist ZEN...and my future fursuit maker FirestormSix)
but back on topic...in my POV i see no problem with changing one's fursona.
-
Personally, I see no problem in changing a fursona, or having multiple fursonas for that matter. Of course, that's probably only because I altered my fursona slightly just yesterday, and I use about 6 other fursonas depending on the situation. So, yeah. :/
-
I don't see a problem in altering your fursona, but having multiple fursonas is out of the question for me. Maybe a few different RP characters, but not more than one fursona for me!
-
To me, it's just an "avatar" in the fandom for fun or expression. I change it whenever I feel like it, and it helps keep people who take it way too seriously off my back, as well as the idiots who pick their friends based off of them.

same I have 1 and only 1 fursona....and even in RPs I use my fursona usually....but I adapt my fursona to what the RP is about....like my friend is making a furry RPG based on our local furry forum starring the members of the forum...the project itself is jsut starting...the game is called "The Unyiffables: An Ontario Furs tale" or something like that...and everyone on the forum will have a paw in at making it....andsome of us (including me) are going to be in the game...it's gonna be epic.

Same here. If its a Pokesona RP, I just alter her story a bit, and say she's a Houndoom. Its not that it's a permanent change, its just that version of them. :)

hmm...for me, id not want to altery my fursona to drasticaly..i mean ...by definition a Fursona is a alternate furry persona...a persona of you.
and for me...my fursona accurately depicts what i feel inside..spunky, colorful, exotic and with the both aspects of a feline and a canine...she is me.
i suppose somewhere down the road a person may "outgrow" there fursona, and i did too..once upon a time i had a neko that was me, but i no longer felt she was me after some time.
so i tottaly support changing or making a new fursona....just i dont see it like a interchangeable outfit...its part of you, not an accessory. you need to bond to your fursona. and changing it based on mood or impulse seems a little....cold to it dont you think?
i get having RP fursonas or other characters you made...but just flip flopping between multiple ones cause "you feel like it" seems a lil like cheating on your main 'sona.
im a Kaprika gal all the way
:3

Well to me a my fursona is me or reflects who i am it just came one day without much thought or effort i just new that was perfect. however not every one is like that and may need alter theirs for a while till they find that perfect match kinda like a puzzle piece. I have however seen on another forum some one who would change on a day to day basis while i may think that maybe extreme it fit him so for every person it will be different. I always have had to keep to myself not able to express much outwards so in way iv had 21 yrs to examine for myself who i am so i got a bit of a head start without realizing it.

My fursona is developing as I sort of rediscover myself. It's like being a whole new person and you have to grow up!
