For lack of anywhere else to put this, I figure here is appropriate. I've been wondering this for some time, are nekos and furries the same, or are they different? I think they're different, but I've heard more than once they're the same. Also, if you're just going to flame, please, go bother someone else. Thanks in advance for any REAL answers.
-
They're a bit similar, but not usually considered the same. Nekos are usually mostly human in appearance, just with added ears, tail(s), and maybe paws. Furries are mostly animal in appearance, though anthros have a human body form.

"In truth nekos are cats. But if you are a cosplayer or an rp type of person then a neko is a half cat person. So there are more than one types of nekos. A real life neko is just an ordinary house kitty/cat. The reason for its name is because it is japanese. But if your talking about 'neko' as in an anime type of person then a 'neko' would be considered as a human with cat ears and a cat tail. Basically its a human with cat parts and etc. Nekos can be found in your house or on an anime show." ~ http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_are_nekos
I think this sums it up pretty well from what I've read before.

I think you may have mis-understood the question. I know what nekos are, and the origin of the word. What I want to know is are they considered furries.
-
That's entirely up to each person cosplaying as a neko in my opinion, I just put that definition up to make others aware of what a neko is.
-
the definition of a furry is a humanoid animal...
a neko is a human with some cat characteristics...furries are the other way around
so no, i dont think they are furries
-
I don't consider them the same as furries mainly because there are different... Uhm, fandoms, I guess? Neko characters seem to belong to more anime oriented fandoms moreso than the furry fandom.
-
Nekos are zoomorphs, which have mainly human features with animal apandeges (Ears, tail), but a furry has more animal charateristics on a human frame (Like the full muzzle, digigrade feet)
I don't feel as if nekos should be counted among the ranks of furs because they're more closly related to anime fandoms.
EDIT: There are two diffrent connotations of zoomorphism, so see wiki page below:

this is an example of a nekos ( from the anime spice and wolf)

Neko in japanese means cat.
:P
So Nekos are cat people basically.
-

Mhm:

That might answer your question btw.

Typically, they're girls with cat ears and a cat tail, though they can be of other animals. I just forgot the term for ear-and-tail humans in general, so I used "neko"
-
Kemonomimi would be the right term for mostly-human beings with animal features.
-
:/ hmmm. I guess I can see your confusion. They might be furs but then again they're more human than fur. They're like furrys except less awesomeness.
-
well my draw furrys book has some of them in it.
-
In my opinion, nekos are not furry, just zoomorphs, therefore shall never acheive the greatness of furs. :P You just stick some ears and tail on a person, and its neko. They just lump furs and neko together cuz they're both animal-related. (Is the book by Chris Hart..? >.>)
-
No comment about "greatness" or "awesomeness" since it IS a furry-based site.

The Urban Dictionary term for Neko just about sums it up:
1. Neko
Japanese for "cat"
things dealing with cats including the whole half-cat/half-human thing
Use your imagination.
Neko ga oishii desu yo.
"Cats are delicious!"
:P

Yeah they would be better classed under otherkin. You could call them a furry though.
