just wondering what every one thinks about it
Earth could have two suns?
2011-02-03
Daniel Reid
Earth could have two suns when Betelgeuse, the second largest star in the constellation Orion, explodes.
Crack out the SPF 8,000. Scientists are predicting a second sun could illuminate the Earth for a period of about two weeks.
I’m going to repeat that for anyone that temporarily lost consciousness. The Earth. Could soon have. Two freaking suns.
This mind-blowing event could happen as soon as this year when Betelgeuse, one of the brightest stars in the sky, explodes – causing enough brightness to illuminate both day and night.
The only real issue of debate is over when exactly this event will happen. Some scientists say the blast might have already happened and we just haven’t seen the light rays yet.
Brad Carter, senior lecturer of physics at the University of southern Queensland in Australia, told the London Telegraph that the blast could happen in the next few months . . . or any time over the next million years. Talk about an open-ended timeframe.
Though the bright red supergiant Betelgeuse is a frightening 100,000 times brighter than our sun, it remains a comfortable 640-light years away.
Though a lot of questions come to mind – namely whether we should start buying stocks in Oakleys or beach towels – experts claim the event should not otherwise affect our planet.
Earth will simply have a front-row seat for what promises to be one of the most incredible light shows in our planet’s history, reports the Daily Mail.

something to tell then grand pups about ?
take vids of it for sure!

2 suns, anytime between now and forever... :/ Thanks Braniac.

ture macid but if it happends now i would like my grand pups to see it some time

I think it would be good to back this up with a credible source: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/01/20/two-suns-twin-stars_n_811864.html
From what I've read, it could be a bit more than two weeks, possibly occur in 2012 and while it could pretty much rid us of our night time for awhile, it will provide a "neutrino" shower which could provide the Earth with elements which is good and is harmless, though there is no telling what it could do to the environment.
-
thats true but still that sun is 640 light years a way if it explodes we will all be dead by the time the beams hit earth ... they maybe man will have a solution as what to do.
-
The Huffington Post article says otherwise.
If the star does go super-nova, Earth will be showered with harmless particles, according to Carter. "They will flood through the Earth and bizarrely enough, even though the supernova we see visually will light up the night sky, 99 per cent of the energy in the supernova is released in these particles that will come through our bodies and through he Earth with absolutely no harm whatsoever," he told news.com.au

What we see now is what light was given out 640 years ago, so it could have already exploded. When they talk about "now" in astronomy they mean what we see not how it actually is.
-
so in other words the star could have exploded and we are just seeing it now.
-
wow that will be beautiful when it happens.
-
yes that's if it happens it could happen any where between now and 1 million years from now
-
man if it does happen in my lifetime itll be a good story for the grandpups :3
-
Wow, that's amazing! :D
I really hope it happens within our lifetime. I'd love to see it happen :3
-
Forgive my ignorance, but wouldn't we not see this for the 640 years because of the speed of light?
-
Well, if it happens right now, then yes.
But if it has already happened and the light is about to reach us, then I'd really like to be alive to see it. :3

Reminds me of 2010 space odyessy with the second sun Lucifer
-
2 weeks of no night ... i dont like that . would make a good story for the pups and grand pups
-
*hisss* I dont like the idea of no night for 2 weeks. And wouldnt it be super bright out?
-
iam not sure , i think it might be like in the artic. Just the day time but at night
-
If there's no night for two weeks, I'm gonna dance on my porch at 2:00 a.m. for the amusement. But that will be a great story for the brother and sister and in the future, my grandpups and pups.

be for earth had 2 suns now theirs only one lmto
-
Tis a slightly disturbing but marvel to be wondered though the blast could also send some pritty nasty astroids our way that could take out the earth or also other factors to which we couldn't possibly know about since we are just such young children of the universe.
-
true, but the earth is hit with astride each and every day, we just dont see them because it is to bright out side.
