Okay as the title said I'm really worried. a close friend notified me of this not 5 minutes ago!!!
I'm just wondering if anyone else has heard of this, and if it's real what are the odds of a 'YES' vote?
http://thenewcivilrightsmovement.com/un-vote-allowing-gays-to-be-executed-result-of-political-religious-fundamentalism/legislation/2010/11/23/15480
It's really-really-really freakin' me out and i'm pretty worried not just for myself but for a lot of my RL and Internet friends!
I mean like, if this is true and ends up being voted 'YES'
this turns everything people have been working on for years! it just turns it around and shoves it out the door!
-
O_o i don't know what to think anymore. i mean, i never really had any faith in politics but come on! if that report says what i think it says then this could cause global conflict over the issue and in the long term destroy the world as we know it.
-
thats just a load of bolloney and the vote seems to only apply to africa
-
even if it isnt boloney, I doubt it would get enough votes to be passed. That's essentially genocide, which is illegal.
-
i agree that passing that vote would condradict one or more of the UN`s own rules
-
and that would stop them? if they wanted to pass it then they would change other laws slightly so that they can.
-
and then wars get declared on them by larger stronger nations. I find it unlikely they would implement genocide.
-
i don't think that they are worried about war.......they are the united nations after all........there is no bigger military in the world than the entire UN.
-
but any individual country to institute this without authority to do so will be shredded
-
Sounds pretty messed, but honestly I don't know if killing gay people counts as genocide... not that I'm supporting it or anything, just a matter of terms. though this does deal with the issue of "are you born gay." If you are born with your sexual orientation then the UN should stop any sort of government led random killing. If you're not born with your sexual orientation, then technically I guess it's up to each individual country to decide their policies on such matters.
Personally, i think you are born with it, but then what do I know?
-
actually killing people because of their sexual orientation is genocide
-
Having just read through the proposal, it seems you're misunderstanding it.
The changes (which have been passed, 100+ votes for yes) were not making it legal or "right" to kill those who are in the LGBT community it was removing it as a serious issue warranting immediate priority of investigation.
Basically it means that such executions have been heavily reduced and that they are now classed in the same way as those to people who are heterosexual. It's not changed because the UN no longer cares, its been changed because its less of a problem as it was.
-
Well I guess that's what i get for something that tl;dr.
-
I'm going with Asia
It wouldn't be considered genocide, seeing how its select people within the same people or religion
-
From what I got out of reading it:
It's mostly because in Africa there is a large majority of fundamentalists of Islamic and Christian nature. When countries like Uganda where over 90% of the population is fundamentalist, when the subject of homosexuality comes up the fundamentalists actually want it to be legal to kill gays. The UN considers this discrimination, so all of the countries with a large number of fundamentalists have decided to take sexuality off of the lists of people who fall under "discrimination."
If each country does this gays still can't be denied of rights, so you can't say "I don't like your sexuality so I'm not going to give you food", what it does mean is that legally what their doing is equally as bad as denying the rights of any other person.
It doesn't mean killing is okay, it means if you kill on base of sexuality it's not a hate crime.

So . . . Unless you live in Africa or similar places you don't really need to worry?

Not at all, although I personally dont have any faith in the UN, personally, I believe that in the end it will go down like the League of nations (although thats my opinion, and as we all know kiddies, my opinion means nothing)
-
Personally, my idea was to dissolve the U.N. . Then we turn their headquarters into the finest bordello on earth - which will do more for world peace than they ever have :P .
-
I picked the wrong time to come out of the closet as bi. :'(

I believe that in the end it will go down like the League of nations
The LoN lasted 27 years, the UN has lasted over 65 so far :P

The operative phrase was in the end, lol :P It could last another hundred years, or it could last another five minutes, either way, when it looses control over its members, it will dissolve. The formation of the UN was more a denial of world history than anything else.
'those who forget their history has no past nor future'
Well, sucks for us ^_^

OLOL a load Of (sensorship)
Im pretty sure all that ended 500 years ago.
