Title: The Menagerie Fursuits (Pic Heavy)
Post by: Toska on November 21, 2010, 08:28:06 AM
As I said in my greetings thread I am a fursuit maker, I am only just starting out and I love getting feedback on my work so here is what I have done so far

Here's Toska V1, she has since been retired (ie pulled apart) and I am now working on Toska V2
(http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q286/kelz98_album/Fursuit%20stuff/1286501053themenagerie_toska.jpg)

Here's Fluffy made for the 2009 Brisbane Zombie walk, he was a hit, I am also working on a rebuild of him
(http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q286/kelz98_album/Fursuit%20stuff/1286500059_themenagerie_fluffy.jpg)

This is a premade fox suit SOLD
(http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q286/kelz98_album/Fursuit%20stuff/1289120714_toska_fox_partial.jpg)

This is the next premade suit that will be going up for sale soon
(http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q286/kelz98_album/Fursuit%20stuff/1289467489_toska_dsc04252.jpg)(http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q286/kelz98_album/Fursuit%20stuff/1289467339_toska_dsc04251.jpg)

I have also done a bunch of tails but I am not going to clog up the thread with pictures of them so if you are interested click the banner in my sig and it will take you to my FA fursuit account.
Please feel free to comment =]

Partials consist of a head, shoulder lenght gloves (either one piece or with separate sleeves and gloves), a tail and feet paws (either ankle or knee length)

Whoa everybody who has posted on this topic has mood emoticons....
Anyhow, back on subject, I was actually thinking about making a partial for myself, but with metal wiring sewn into a kevlar body. So yes, I want to make a suit that will last a thousand years. Have you ever done anything on par with this, Toska?

No I haven't tried anything quite like that, the closest I have done it wire based heads (Toska and Fluffy) but I found them to be a but uncofortable and if you take a blow to the head, like when I got crash takled in Toska they can bend and stab you in the head. But thats not to say you couldn't come up with a better design. Another option would be a cast resin which is strong and light weight

Yep $200 is the starting price for a budget suit. For example the fox above but made from the same quality fur as the tiger becuase it is a basic 2 colour suit.
The budget fur is a short pile and less dense compared to the delux fur, I personally think it looks fine and I am using it for my own suit. Because ut's shorter though it doesn't work quite as well for fluffy tails (like foxes) but it still looks ok

That looks pretty good. ^^

I'm still fascinated that you can do those face stripes and stuff without an airbrush. :P

Thanks.
I just mask the whole head with tape, mark out the stripes and cut them out then spary the whole lot, then theres alot of brushing to get it nice and soft

They start at $60, the more colours and the bigger it is the higher the price

Wish I had the money to make another better fursuit. lol
Looks like mine's not good enough to get commissions. Any tips? xD
Your's looks really good for a first suit, I’d be proud of it.
As for tips.
Look at a lot of reference pics, see if you can find some foam work WIP pics to see how the underlying structure is put together because furred heads can look quite a bit different from the base. Remember that fur is good at killing details so you have to make certain things more pronounced. But when looking at refs don’t get too caught up in them, make it your style rather than trying to copy someone else’s too exactly.
And don’t be afraid to rip it apart if it doesn’t look or feel right to you. The tiger head up there is actually my 5th or 6th head base attempt. The others looked ok but it wasn’t ‘right’.
And above all practice. Try and get your hands on some cheap materials, I get my foam as off cuts from a local mattress maker (one of the reasons my suits are cheaper than most) and build more stuff, even if you can’t afford fur to finish it build the bases for practice (you can always sell them on furbuy or whatever once you are done or put them away until you can finish them)

Also check out http://community.livejournal.com/fursuit/
There is a bunch of useful stuff on there, check out the memories section and it’s all listed by topic
If you have any other questions I might be able to help you with just ask =]

How much would a set of gloves cost? (I actually want gloves that form to the hand, with a pronounced claw :]) so... Any ideas?

Sounds nice. The claws would be best off baing cast in plastic with finger cups (so the basr of the claw sits over the end of your finger so it doesn't wiggle around giving it a more realistic look. As for the cloves themsleves I'd need some more measurments that usual to make sure they fit properly, I might have to put gussets along the edges of the fingers deoending on how large your fingers are which could be a bit fiddely.
All together you are looking at around $80+ for 2 colour shoulder length gloves. If you giive me some more details like colour paw pads and stuff like that I could give you a more accurate estimate

These two huskies are the most recent projects I have done
Diesel is the black one with me wearing it and the red one it Turbo being worn by Ashtin although neither of us are wearing proper shirts for these suits (low cut necks and short sleeves leaving skin exposed)

Both are plastic canvas based with moving jaws, although Turbo's needs to be adjusted after furring to get it moving more smoothely as well as having his red fur trimmed, and they are both going to get new eyes and eyelids, teeth, tongues and a thorough cleaning before being offered for sale
Turbo was finished in 2 days, thanks Ashtin for the help sewing ears for me
