Title: volcals
Post by: Self-sain on October 20, 2010, 01:36:42 AM
I was wondering if any one had any good volcal warm ups, and stuff?

i'm no singer, but most of singing is about musical ear... so understanding (western) music theory would be a very good start

but in terms of actual voice warm-ups... scale arpeggios are always good, doing them around all keys and in all the registers that you can reach with the vocal chords that your parents gave you. also i hear a few singers doing sort of sirens with their voices, going as high as they can get and moving down to as low as they can get.

i guess they help... but i'm a saxophonist, not a singer. my best advice would be good old google!

You mean screaming your lungs out and hoping to God that nobody notices that you can't sing?

well it depense on what ur singing

living clean gives ur voice a soft sound

drinking an smoking will give ur voice a gravely texture like a jazz guy

eating honey reguarly helps u not lose ur voice, thats what tom jones does

and screaming ur head off makes u look like an idiot

you can have a gravelly voice without smoking, and vice versa. i don't understand how people can smoke and still have beautiful clean voices... there are videos of these beautiful singers from the 50s who have unbelievably crisp and pure sounding voices (check out chet baker), but they would take a drag from a cig immediately before they start singing and take the odd drag whenever there's a long enough rest!

lol... i don't think ciggys have changed much... if anything they're more healthy now what with the obsession with general health, diet and well being that's swept the earth.

by the way... don't smoke if you wanna sing. from knowing singers who've started smoking, it drastically decreases your range.

Actually I figured they would be worse, so you can become more addicted.

Yea, but there are those who are just born with the voice of a siren --__--

Correction, Google is ALWAYS the best way! XD

Nah, but, I dont think I can help you too much since I can't even sing a clear tone, but I guess you could look for some video tutorials on Youtube for example (Youtube is owned by Google).

tom waits isn't really jazz my friend... he draws plenty of influence from jazz but in the real world, is very very far removed.
