Title: PC help?
Post by: Gen on July 29, 2010, 05:45:05 AM
First off, sorry if this is the wrong sect.
I have a Compaq Presario S3200NX. It has a 100gig HD, which is blank except a Windows XP installation, which isnt complete because I'm unable to start the PC. It is ten years old and all I have. I COMPLETELY formatted it recently and installed windows XP again. It gives me a "A disk read error has occured. Press CTRL+ALT+DLT to Restart" message. I only have one HD and have installed windows again and again. No solution. Would there be a techy fur who could help?

Most likely you'll have to replace the HDD at least, sounds as if it's failed.

Seems like you use a IDE ATA hard drive and it fails to boot up. You could try to open the PC up and make sure that the black jumper in the back of your main hard drive is set to "MA" (MASTER). Any other drives that you have such as your CD-ROM, DVD-ROM must be placed as "SL" (SLAVE). When done, open the BIOS; when you turn on the computer, the post boot screen will come on, look for where it will tell you what key to press to get into the BIOS, All systems are different, some are done by pressing the F2 key, or the F11 key, my system uses the DEL key. On Compaqs and HP its usually the F11 key. Once you are in the BIOS, you need to find the section on the Boot Order. The boot order should be placed in the following order:

1. HDD (Hard Disk Drive)

2. CD-ROM

3. USB, FDD or NET

When you finished that, navigate back to the main screen of the BIOS (by clicking ESC) and make sure you select the option called "Save and exit" or something similar, just make sure it saves it. Then just reboot and hope it'll work.
If it didn't help, i'd suggest you to replace your harddrive.

It wouldn't have, BIOS doesn't change itself magically, you'd have done it yourself.

As I said before: if there is a read error on the drive, the drive is damaged, dead or dying, the only fix for that is to buy a new hard drive, they aren't overly expensive.

Everything's expensive when the only money you get in the summer is five dollars(though it could be worse). I guess I'll wait five years for a new one xD

Just make sure you have all your important files backed up in case it dies for good.
