Previous champions Italy go out bottom of the table. Previous finalists France go out bottom of the table after being beaten by the hosts who hadn't won a single game. England scrape through beneath the USA. Germany only just beats Ghana.
As far as world cups go, this has got to be the weirdest. Europe's finest are struggling and the small countries are proving sturdy and surprising.
We haven't even gotten to the knockout stages yet, and drama is everywhere.
The only essence of normality here is that the south americans are still showing the world that they are some of the best, particularly Argentina with Maradona at the helm and Messi as the figurehead, and of course Dunga's serious, winning is everything, Brazil squad.
So what do furries think about this?

Italy and France meet each other over Africa into Europe, England could of joined them but they face Germany and New Zealand crash out unbeaten! COME ON ENGLAND!
-
England have the worst path ever. In all likelihood, after Germany, they'll come up against Argentina, and after that, either Brazil or Portugal.
If they beat Germany, there'll be much celebrating, but that will be nothing compared to the reaction if they ever beat Maradonna's Argentina. The country will go crazy, most particularly for the whole "Hand of God" controversy.

Uruguay unsurprisingly beat South Korea, (Which is a shame because I did want South Korea to do well. They're underdogs after all.) but the main event was definitely Ghana vs USA.
2-1 Ghana Win, Extra time. It was a great game and both teams did really well, but I was supporting Ghana as they're the only african nation left in this African tournament. They're the third African nation to ever get to the quarter finals. It's all very special for them. Good on them.

Germany 4
England 1
The worst defeat they have ever suffered. The worst performance I've ever seen from them. England was packed with some of the best players in the world. Germany was packed with a bunch of youngsters, who should only really be deadly in the next world cup. Even without all the absurd referee decisions, the better team won.
Argentina 3
Mexico 1
Again, very contraversial issues which had the potential of sparking a riot, but everything was calmed down and again the better team won. the question is what would have happened if Tevez' first goal was disallowed as it should have been? can't possibly know now.

the problem with england in our game against germany was that the players had no idea how to position themselves around the pitch. i'm not footballer, i'm a basketball player... but i do know that in football it helps to spread yourselves out verticaly across the pitch... or else, the defending team will trap you in the middle and you'll have nowehere to go. watch any moment when england are on offence from that game and they're all bunched in the middle.
anyone have any predictions about the winners? after today, i like holland a lot... but spain are pretty fo shiz too
-
The players know how to position themselves, we've seen it a million times in the club matches, but It's just that Capello didn't seem to have the right ideas in this competition. He may be a very respectable manager, but he totally failed in this world cup.
As for the winners, i think it'll either be the Netherlands or Germany... though judging from Germany's match against Argentina, I'd put my faith in them.
-
^ ohhh!!! egg on your face bruv! XD ... joke... i'm not like that.
i'm still backing holland... them beating brazil was too good
-
Yeah to be honest, spain deserved that. Good on them. I'm not massivelty excited about this final, since neither team are particularly inspiring. but it should be a solid game, and there's always drama at the World Cup Final.

And so the world cup ends with a fizzle rather than a bang as Spain win with a predictable and rather boring 1-0. The fact that it dragged on into extra time doesn't help.
The only person who was actually rather cool to watch was the referee and his linesmen, being as sharp as a hawk who had three eyes in the back of their heads.
I didn't watch the whole match. My brother had to tell me the score just now. I really didn't care for it, and clearly it wasn't terribly surprising, save for the netherlands wild and dangerous fouls in the first half.
But it was fun while it lasted, eh?
Still my favourite moment was actually the first goal of the competition. Tshabalala's stunner. Him and Enyeama really need to get into european clubs. Oh and ofcourse those insane japanese free kicks, and that north korean team.
-
The only match I actually watched in full entirety was the match with Slovakia V Italy.... gotta say i loved it, other than that... world cup isnt normally somthing im greatly interested in watching :/
-
well it was Slovakia's shining moment of glory. That was a great match.
I also loved South Africa beating France. Such crazy group stages they were.

asia... i think the whole world agrees with you (with the possible exception of spain). i barely watch any football, but even i could tell that match was really dull. i ended up running up and down some scaled on my conveniently placed beside my bed soprano saxophone.
i didn't see too much of it, so i'm not sure i have a particularly high point. but i did enjoy watching england - slovenia with my dad.
