Title: HIM
Post by: x on March 24, 2010, 06:03:06 PM
Bridgette's high-heeled boots click-clack-clacked against the linoleum floor as she made her way down a seemingly neverending hallway. The lighting, fueled by white neon tubing hooked to the celing far above the Mistress' head, was quite bright, bright enough to make any normal person want to squint. Every fifty yards or so, a speaker-box could be seen hooked to the white walls--- walls with paint that peeled from age, revealing blood red plaster underneath. After awhile, you could start to hear music streaming from the speakers. Relaxing, smooth cafe tunes. Played nonstop in the hopes of keeping the children calm.

More frequent on either side were the shiny black doors: Room 214, 207, 215, 206…classrooms. They were all empty. It was too early in the Morning for School.

Groaning, Bridgette reached up as she walked and removed her black-rimmed glasses before tucking them into one of the many pockets that adorned her robes. “Something always has to happen to wake me up, doesn’t it?” she grumbled to herself.

When she at last reached a t-shaped junction in halls, she took a right, followed it for some time, then took a left--- finally coming to the Front Hall stairs. She jumped them two at a time; each individual stair wasn’t worthy to grace her feet. Right hand lightly gripping the silver railing, brilliant ringlets of honey-yellow hair bouncing, Bridgette masterfully traveled downwards three stories and hundreds of steps within twenty seconds.

“Madame Bridgette, you have arrived,” a Prefect greeted her at the base of the steps. The ground level floor. “We were beginning to go bonkers waiting for you.” He nervously reached up and straightened his mask with a shaky arm.

“Oh, shut up, you parasite.” Something in her voice rang distinctly Australian (enough so to bring back fond memories of the Crocodile Hunter), but, then again, no-one had ever really figured out where she had lived while on Earth. She could be anything from anywhere. “Now show me to them.”

…He shut up. Then he turned and motioned over his shoulder for her to follow. They walked through a grandly, exquisitely decorated hall, complete with chandelier lighting and mosaic tiles, and into an even more brilliant Commons. If one didn’t know any better, they could walk into this School and mistake it for a hotel. An admittance kiosk crafted from gold and pearl. Decorative plants that accented leather sofas and arm chairs. And the front doors themselves? Ten feet tall, made of pure glass. Looking through them, you wouldn’t see much aside from the ash-grey sky. Purgatory had a tendency to warp what you saw through glass or inside mirrors.

“Morning fatigue, Bridgette, my Madame? They’re right there.” The Prefect pointed over to a lonely corner, where three wine red couches clustered around a coffee table. She followed with her gaze, and, when she finally saw, the woman let out a tiny laugh of glee.

“Six of them? Absolutely marvelous.”

Usually, only one or two dead children appirated in the Commons per day. Six was a miracle. Bridgette clamored over to look at them, her sky blue eyes sparkling with anticipation. They were all lying limply on the couches, some in each others arms. One was a rabbit, two were foxes, another a hyena, and still another a raccoon. One was even a unicorn.

Bridgette tucked her robe under her bottom and took a seat in one of the open armchairs, thereafter crossing her legs. She smiled. “Now we just have to wait for them to wake up--- and realize they’re Dead.”

((As you can see, I’m starting this right when all of our child characters first die and arrive at the School. This way, I can better introduce all of them (and you) to what it’s like there. You can start with flashbacks of their death, or just have them wake up, either way works. Feel free to start off with your other chars too. Whatever floats your boat.))

"Hey! That's my ball!"  Entaru hopped up and down in vain, attempting to take the ball back from the bully.  The other bully bashed him across the head with a junior sized baseball bat, knocking him to the ground.  They began to stomp on his prone body as they laughed at his shrieks for mercy.

"You white trash little hobo, things like you don't derserve to have pretty toys"  The bully hurled the ball into the street.  Entaru gasped as he watched his only toy nearly get hit by a car.

"Noooo!"  Entaru bolted out from underneath the bullies, knocking them both over, and grabbed the ball.  Suddenly, the blast of an air horn caused Entaru to look in horror as the silver grill of a MACK truck slammed into his nose.

Then everything was gone...except the ball.  He rubbed his nose in the darkness, all the while keeping the ball at his side.  Then the darkness began to dissapate.  He rubbed his blurry eyes with one hand to clear his sight.  He looked around the room in awe and was surprised to see a woman sitting across from him.

"What happened?  Where am I?"

One of the children stirred, the first child to do so...the white fox. Bridgette noticed his emerald green eyes fluttering open long before she heard his question. Smiling, she replied: "This is the Afterlife, sweetheart. But don't be scared. Never be scared." She stood up and walked over to him before sitting down at his side. "Because this is the place where all children go after Death," she lied. "This is where you will heal, where you can forget anything and anyone who's ever hurt you." She was not adhered to getting all lovey-lovey, so instead gave him a gentle pat on the back. "It's okay if you want a moment to take it all in. Everyone's a bit freaked when it first happens."

~~~Meanwhile~~~
"Wakie! Wakie! Time for eggs and bakie!" Aike-Aike called as she pushed open the door to her patient's room. On a sign next to the door, the child's name had been posted: Mark. She walked inside, switched on the lights, and smiled before moving to her patient's bedside. "How is my darling little Marky-Marky this morning?"
...Her 'darling little Marky-Marky' wasn't doing so hot. The ten-year-old boy was skinny as a rail, his eyes were swollen and had dark circles under them, and his previously luminous hair was dull from being stuck inside so long. Even more despicable, his tiny wrists and ankles were encircled by Velcro restraints that kept him pinned to his eternal bed.
The room was terribly cold, hideously white. Every metal surface and plaster wall gleamed. For some strange reason, the staff always thought it was important to keep a clean infirmary. Groaning, the miserable boy woke up at the sound of her voice, and did his best to readjust his position under the scratchy white sheets. He looked to her with weary eyes. Then he turned his head away.
"Aww, Mr. Grumpyfur, what's wrong?" Aike-Aike implored, sincerely thinking the reason didn't have to do with her. When Mark didn't answer, she simply went on: "It's your Operation today, so no reason to be sad. Gonna be sooo much funnn, huhhh?" She reached for a pouch attached to her belt. It was in the shape of a pink piggy with big anime eyes. She opened it, and, after a bit of digging, she proffered an over sized syringe. Baby blue casing. Pink pump. Needle several times the size of a wasp's stinger--- perfectly adorable, just the way she liked it. Aike-Aike knelt down to her knees and reached under the bed, feeling for her box of toys. Once her thin fingers alighted upon the edge, she reached inside and started to surf around for 'Mr. Teddy.'
"What is wrong with you?" the boy cried shakily. He had since turned back to her.
"What's wrong with me? Nothing, nothing nothing nothinggg..." The last three 'nothings' she sang rather than spoke. "Aha!" She yanked her hand back out from under the bed, light brown teddy bear in tow. She stood up. "Alright, little Marky. Today I'd like you to meet two very good friends of mine. This...*motions at the teddy* is Mr. Teddy. And this...*motions at the syringe* is Mr. Needle. They want to take a little trip to the wacky rainbow factory."
Aike-Aike broke out in insane laughter, thinking she was giving the kid the fun time of his Afterlife.
The door swung open as Nero all but danced into the room.  His replacement hand clicked and whirred happily at the thought of creating mayhem.  Sliding next to Aike-Aike, he looked the boy up and down.  "Well, well, well, what have we here?  Did the boy hurt himself or is today going to start off good?"
Entaru leaned in beside Aike-Aike, getting dangerously close, and looked at the boy's chart.  His eyes lit up as he saw the words: Correctional Surgery.  "Ho ho!  Today is going to be excellent!"  The last word came out as a screech as he danced his way to the opposite side of the table.  "Nurse Aike, please tell me you haven't prepared him yet.  I so do love watching you prepare the patients."
((I'm going to go with the same style as Enty and start with their last seconds of life. I like how that works))
Kodo pressed the pencil ever closer to the upper-classman's eye. That'll teach her for calling her a theif. She wasn't like her parents. The student grunted loudly as she kicked Kodo off of her, saving her from what could be a serious wound.
Kodo's eyes widened in fear as she stepped back to find no ground beneath her. The upper-classman could only grasp at the sudden relazation at what she'd done.
Pain shot through the racoon's back as she hit one step, and barraged the rest of her body as she tumbled down the stairs, ending with a sickening crack at the bottum.
However, she didn't land hard. In fact, she landed on something soft; cussionned. Kodo was afraid to open her eyes. She knew something wasn't right.
At the sound of another child speaking, she opened her eyes, hoping to see the infirmary at school. She simply stared across the room at the woman across from her, knowing emmediatly that she was no where she'd ever been before.
Aike-Aike let out a yipe of suprise at the Doctor who had just danced in without warning. Not hearing a thing he said, she turned and looked up at the towering Doctor as though she had never seen him before--- according to Aike's memory loss problem, she hadn't. "Wow, mister, you're really gimongous, aren't you?" Her voice had always been insanely girly and high. Enough to make one wonder whether she practiced at it. Though she smiled at Nero, she didn't give him a chance to answer.
"But I can't talk right now, Mr. Super Tall Guy. I have to play a game with little Marky here," the lunatic chirped, and faced back towards the boy. "Now. I think I was saying something about Mr. Teddy and Mr. Needle going on a trip. Let's see.....where oh where could that darn Rainbow Factory be? Do you know, Mr. Teddy?" she asked of the bear, bringing it close to her nose, her eyes crossing as her line of sight blurred. When the toy did not so much as open its mouth, she frowned. "Well, it has to be around here somewhere." The wolf, holding up her two toys, began to prance around the room, looking for a tell-tale shelf of goodies.
"You're freaking insane, you know that? Both of you," the boy hissed, shortly before being overcome by coughing fits. At first it seemed like the poor thing was going to hack and wheeze enough to bring up a lung. But, slowly, the coughs and the tremors subsided and he sunk mournfully back down in bed, closing his eyes, his wrists submitting to their restraints. "Just a..." he told himself slowly, "...just a bad dream....just a bad dream...just a dream, it's just a dream......."
"Welll stick a feather in my hat and call me Yankee Doodle!" Aike-Aike exclaimed out of nowhere, from across the room. "I've found the Rainbow Factory, everyone!"
The 'Rainbow Factory' in question was actually a cabinet above the corner sink--- a cabinet chocked full of tiny bottles of drugs. Drugs which would soon grace the inside of Mr. Needle.
((Don't worry, I'm going to get Bridgette moving as soon as I can, what I'm really waiting for is waiting to get my own children's death and waking in order...))
Talin started to stirr in a room that seemed rather lavish compared the place he saw Mother in. He looked to the woman sitting across, and then the -clomp- -clomp- of boots resounded as a blacked cloaked figure with horns walked into the room, and handed the woman a clipboard with each child's 'documentation'.
Orphin stood there and waited for Bridgette to either praise his timliness, or give him something else to do.
Talin's eyes stayed locked between the woman and the figure that just arrived, and he tuned out everything else that was going on. "W-Where am I..." was all he could manage, not sure why he didn't feel the pain he did with Mother.
Waking up, the dark Lilium would look all around her before moving. Dark, almost black holes for eyes, scanning everything, the dead bodies in paticular. She picks herself up after a minute, moving into a sitting position, legs up to her chest. She says nothing, of course, merely brushes off her black dress.
Vyvas would wake up not long after Lilium, and she has a much different reaction to it all. She is startled, and her head looks all about the room, before a shaky, scared voice asks "Wheh-where am I~?" her voice quivering with the question, only making her seem all the more afraid.
"Twinkies...nah, those won't be good. Devil dogs, nope, I need something that's good tasting and filling." Leon thought to himself while looking down the rows of shelves, inside a small store named "Small Town Stop". Sweets, junk food, soda: all the things that kids wanted, unless they were alone and hungry, then they would look for food that would actually help them, rather than just throw empty calories into their stomachs (Unless the kid was still a younger one). "Ah! Beef Jerky! That sounds good!" Leon hastily swiped a bag of Jerky, got some water bottles and went up to the main counter. There was the store clerk, a middle aged man with a comb over and mustache. "Excuse me, sir, but I'd like to purchase these items." He put the jerky and water on the counter, and the man stared at him for a second with an eyebrow raised. " Kinda strange that you'd be out here all by yourself at such a young age, ya'll gonna be ok?" Leon frowned a bit, thinking of his parents faces. "Yes, well, I'm confident that I'll be safe from harm." (A bit too ironic) As the clerk was working his cash-register, a suspicious looking stranger passes by the both of them and tries to look occupied with some magazines...about woman's fashion. "Alright, that'll be 5 bucks, kid." Leon nodded and reached into his pocket, then pulled out a crumpled up five dollar bill. The clerk looked up from his register, then saw the stranger who walked in only minutes ago, was pulling out a gun. He struggled to pick up his pre-loaded .12 gauge shotgun. "GET DOWN, KID!" Leon crouched down as the clerk shot off a round, then pumped it. The man got hit in the shoulder, and sprayed multiple bullets with his 9mm handgun, one of them catching Leon in the chest. He heard another shot go off, and a large thud following it. Moments later, the clerk was on the phone, probably contacting an ambulance. "Yes, please hurry! Hang in there kid, helps on..." Everything started to fade into black, sounds were drowned out, and silence ensued.
After moments of absolute darkness, silence and confusion, Leon's eyes opened slowly. He saw a number of kids around him, but he was too disoriented to care. He looked up to a nicely dressed and smiling women. "Where in the world..." He sat up slowly and looked around. "This does not look like a hospital. What exactly is this place, miss?"
Nero sighed.  She didn't remember him...again.  Yes, the Purgatory Medical Staff weren't known for their ability to remember things but she was probably the worst.  For years he had tried to get her 'attention' and every day she forgot who he was.  So beautiful and impossible to get at.
All the more reason to try.
He looked down at the child strapped to the table and smiled underneath his veil.  "Well, it seems you're in for a treat, boy.  Those are the good chemicals.  You'll get to watch the ENTIRE operation.  Aren't you lucky!"  Nero burst into laughter and spun on his toes around the table.  "Nurse?  Are Mr. Needle and Mr. Teddy ready for their trip?  I'm afraid the child is getting bored of the game.  I think we need to liven up the game a bit."
Aike-Aike selected from the cabinet a glass bottle that was full of a rainbow-colored fluid. She stuck the needle through the lid and withdrew a good 200CC worth. Then she heard Nero’s voice slicing through her concentration. After returning the bottle to its shelf, she danced back to the table to join the Doctor. “Bored? Marky-Marky, you can’t be bored, can you?” She plastered a dejected look onto her face. “That makes me really really sad. I try so hard to make you happy, little Marky. Please don’t be bored.”  When the boy refused to reply, his eyes closed, every so often murmuring ‘It’s just a dream…’, Aike-Aike pouted and turned to Nero. She stood up on her tip-toes, but even that wasn’t good enough to reach Nero’s ear-level, and the woman ended up whispering her next bit to his shoulder: “I think you’re right, mister. He does look pretty bored. What should we do about it?”
 ___________
Breathe…I can’t…I can’t breathe……. Lungs stretching and tearing beyond any normal capacity, eyes burning from the various toxins and chemicals and other disgusting things, fluffy white dress and long blue hair weighing her down, Brenna yet still tried to swim forward into the murk, arms grasping wildly for her friend only to come up empty-handed each time. So much water……so much…..Darla…Darla, where are you?..... Two minutes ago, a rush of water to envy any major river had flooded the concrete basin where Brenna and her friend Darla had been playing in the rain. They had attempted to climb out, but too late, for within seconds the water grew from a steady trickle into a monstrous, undulating, muddy-colored wall. Sweeping the children away into a tunnel, slamming them into a metal grate…
Why is this…so hard….why can’t I swim the way I want to…. Brenna tried to kick off the grate, and after that didn’t work, she tried to climb up it. Amazingly, she was able to. But instead of receiving a breath of air at the top of her climb, Brenna’s head was greeted by a donk of rough concrete.
She was trapped underwater. No way to keep flowing with the current. No way to swim back. And no way to come up for air.
The girl prayed. She prayed as her eyes rolled back into her head and she was forced to shut them just to ease the pressure. She prayed as her lungs grew red hot in her chest, as they seared with agonizing pain. She even prayed whilst she went unconscious and slowly died.
_____________
Darla was in a sort of predicament. Stuck. Stuck to a metal grate while cold water pushed at her body with a mighty force. Only…Darla wasn’t so lucky as to have freedom of movement like Brenna had. No, instead, her legs were tangled in the thorny, twiggy branches of a giant tumbleweed, which had been carried with the current alongside them. Every time she cried out in pain, as a rock or other hard object slammed into her, as one of her bare legs caught against a thorn, she would swallow more water.
One could easily and simply say that Darla’s Death was more agonizing than that of her friend’s.
___________
Eyelids flickering open, Brenna pushed herself upright on the couch. Soft. Soft….that was….wrong. The metal grate was far from soft. And the air…dry. Also wrong. Where was the water, the water she had been drowning in seconds before? “Either I’m dead or this is some unusual sort of hospital,” the girl commented as she scanned the magnificent room, her gaze traveling over the array of children, the bizarre-looking man in black, to at last rest upon a human woman with soft features, blue eyes, black and white robes with a giant white cross pattern embroidered over her chest, and golden-blonde hair that cascaded down her back in huge ringlets.
Next to her, Darla stirred, moaning…coughing a little only to realize her lungs were no longer plagued with water. She sat up as well, equally shell-shocked by what she saw. “What in the blue blazes is up with this?” she asked, instantly reverting back to her obnoxious personality.
___________
Bridgette beamed warmly as she saw that most of the children were finally waking up and looking around, some asking where they were. More children had appirated by this time, bringing the total to a mind-shattering nine. She was about to answer their volley of questions when Orphin strode up to her side and interrupted, handing her a BlackBook clipboard full of records and personal information for each child. She turned, looked at the prone Prefect, and smiled. “Well, mate,” she said, accented enough to again make you wonder if she hailed from Earthly Australia, “That was magnificent timing on your part. Thank you, peaches.” ‘Peaches’ was a pet name she used for anyone who made her happy in a great way. Rarely did any of the children have the capacity to make her that happy, so she mainly used it on staff.
Through the BlackBook magic that encircled the clipboard, she could feel Memories streaming into her consciousness, Memories that each child held…so many were dark, terribly dark…But now wasn’t the time to pour over BlackBooks. There were things to be done. Bridgette cut off the connection. She gave the child called Entaru a last pet of his back before standing up.
Suddenly, before she could speak even one word of welcome to the new group of children, the alarm started to wail. It was so loud that it echoed off of every surface, reverberated in every hall— somewhere out there, a child (or an incredibly dim-witted staff member) had succumb to their Second Death. The alarm was not made by staff hands. Or any other hands for that matter. No-one knew where it was. It was just an omnipresent, un-seekable thing created by powers above Bridgette herself. Its job was to sound every time a resident of Purgatory died a second time.
The woman wanted to curse aloud, but knew better. Rather, she took Orphin by his right shoulder and did her best to speak over the alarm: “Gather some of your mates. Tell them to go look over the School, see if any ‘doubly-dead’ kids are lying about. I’m going to have to go Outside the gates and look in the town. And as for you yourself, Orphin, I need you to take these children to a waiting room somewhere where it’s quiet. Get them some blankets, some candy, some water, whatever they might need to tide them over ‘till I come back. Please try not to scare them. I prefer happy, smiling faces.” She glared at Orphin seriously, hoping her orders sunk in.
Then she turned back to the children and gave her best sympathetic look. “Don’t worry, everyone. It’s just the alarm. I’ll be right back to show you around your new home.” Bridgette quickly glided to the glass front doors and pushed them open, running outside into the courtyard. No rush of air greeted her, cold, hot or otherwise. Just the everlasting blankness, everlasting downpour of ashes from grey sky that was Purgatory.
“Woe is the life of a Head Master…” the woman complained, shortly before unfurling her black raven’s wings through the slits in her robes and taking off into the still air.
Kodo stood and patted her shirt habitually. With the sudden alarm, the adults acted strangely, leaving her greatly confused. She bit her tongue and held back the urge to question, one of the other children were sure to ask for her. She glanced at the blonde woman as she strided away, before turning to the other children to see her companions in confusion.
Orphin felt happy at being referred to by 'Peaches' though it did not fit his form in the slightest. He nodded at her order and then went to a Prefect that was just leaning against the wall since it didn't have orders. When compared to Orphin, it looked like the leaning one was higher in rank, but that was not the case as Orphin knocked the larger Prefect down with only a single fist to its massive gut, and then let out a soul-rattling roar in its direction. It scrambled to get up and soon was out the room and went to gather others to go look for any 'second-death' children.
After that brief display of animosity, he turned back to the children, and with a smile that could barely be seen under his hood, beckoned them to follow him to the waiting room as he stood there.
________________
Before the black-robe even showed his attitude, Talin was at least increadibly scared by how the figure carried himself, but when he saw the sudden strength, a permanent fear of him had formed at the pit of his being. But, he couldn't show it because he really had no idea what was going on, so he slowly got off the couch, and started walking towards it, then waited on the others to follow suit.
Entaru cringed as he heard the man roar.  It was merely the sound that scared him though.  The ways of adults were not foreign to him, as many in his neighborhood would resort to such violent outbursts if even slightly annoyed.
Getting up, he followed the adult.  He was dead now...he knew that when he awoke.  One doesn't normally survive being hit by a truck when you're only a little over 3 feet in height.  He knew he would never see his parents again but it didn't seem to bother him.  Yes, he loved his parents but there was no point in mourning for them...they were alive after all.  The other children were scared but he felt...at home.  As ominous as the building was he just couldn't bring himself to be scared.  As he followed the man he looked about in awe.
With everything that felt wrong about this place, it felt...so very right.
"Well, if the boy is bored then we should play a game!  The children love games.  But what to play...."  He began circling the table tapping his index finger on his chin.  "We could play Candyland...no, we're low on red and green pills......HA!  I know!"  Nero snapped his fingers in realization. "We can play 'Hide and Seek'!"
Nero turned to the child and knelt so that he could get closer.  "Oh, I think you'll like this game Mark.  You see in 'Hide and Seek', one of us hides a random object in you and the other has to figure out what in the room is missing and take it out of you!  If the finder guesses wrong or can't find the object, then the hider wins.  If the finder guesses right and successfully finds the object, then the finder wins.  It's a wonderful game, believe me."
Nero turned back to Aike-Aike "What do you think, Ms. Aike?  Do you want to play 'Hide and Seek'?"
Vyvas seems to get very perturbed by the hooded man's violence, and noise. This near fear, when coupled with her confusion, seems to make her very obedient. Following him not even a split second after he motions for her to, she remains silent now. And, honestly, she fears that if she didn't remain silent, she might scream, which would not help anything in any way.
The creepy little girl, Lilium, seems to have a much different reaction. she waits a few moments, observing the other children, before she follows. As she walks, she makes very little noise, an amazing feat considering one would expect her shoes to click and clack loudly. Yet, she seems to move as silently as a shadow as she follows, eyes wandering to take everything in.
"I knew I'd get to you," he said.
"What happened?" she replied.
"You died, and I'm guessing I did too."
"Are you ok?" Asia asked.
"I found you, so we're ok." When beckoned to walk with Orphin, Kali pulled Asia closer. The little rabbit girl looked back up at Kali, and prised his arms open, pulling him along to where they were asked to go.
"There's nothing else we can do, Kali. We have to follow or we'll get in trouble," she said. The fox shook his head as Asia pulled him along.
Kodo jumped ever so slightly at the adult's outburst. She forced the oddity to the back of her mind, finding the issue of how she got there to be more relavant. She was one of the first to follow the adult, bumping the small white fox on accident. Jerking her head back to the boy, the red ball caught her eye. It stood out like blood on snow. With a quick blink, she locked eyes with the fox and nodded in apology for touching him. She was well aware of how many children despised contact.
Orphin growled at the unmoving Darla, and lashed out his arm, sending out a white chain with ugly hooks wrapping around Darla and holding tight as he yanked back and caused her to not only fly through the air, but right into Orphin's talons and under his armpit. "Don't fall behind" was all he said as he began walking down the hall, his boots making his apporach noticeable to all staff members, along with the shuffle of Talin's feet as he kept step with Orphin, not wanting to incur the wrath of someone who could snatch him from across the room.
Surprisingly, the claws did not dig into Darla, but instead hooked around the chains, binding her to his chains...
Brendan rushed into the room, he was hurriedly putting on a tie to go along with his work attire. "Quit your bickering, the both of you. I'm going out to ask Bridgette what's going on. "Don't try it, she's most likely too busy to have a moment of your time, maybe you should wait." "Wait?! Wait for the monsters to come and eat us alive?! I'm certainly not waiting! I've got to get outta here!" Paws ran out of the room, sprinting across the halls at speeds no human could keep up with. Oh great...Rosie, track him down while I get to the bottom of this. Rosie nodded and ran down the halls after Paws, tracking his scent to an old janitor's closet. She chuckled for a moment, "Come on, let's get you to the classroom." But the cat was reluctant to give in just yet. "Go away, you mutt!".
Brendan stepped out of his room, locked the door and walked down to the entrance of the building, but he stopped abruptly when he saw a large number of students being escorted by Orphin. "My my...quite the large amount of new-comers. Bridgette must have been delighted. Do you know where she is, by any chance?"
Darla screamed as she was snatched up off the couch and hurled through the air. Her breath lost in a turrent of confusion and subconscious fear, the girl followed for a few steps before sucking in a lungful of air. There had to be an explanation for this. Nothing, no single thing she had seen so far was logical. Dream, had to be a dream...But...Dream or not, there was always a time and place to voice her opinion: "HOLD IT!" the hyena growled at Orphin as she tried to undo the chains wrapped around her. "I dunno if you have a problem...but it sure looks like you have a problem to me. I have no idea what kind of whack job dream this is, but...".............Brenna winced from her spot back on the couch as she listened to Darla telling off the...the whatever he was. Not wanting to meet Darla's fate, she ran to catch up, whispering: "Lord Jesus, protect your children in their darkest hour, whether in dreamland or home...." the girl mumbled several prayers as she fidgeted with the rosary around her neck.
Aike-Aike's eyes widened and a happy-looking spark of emotion flashed through them as she heard Nero announce a GAME. "Oh oh oh oh! I LOVE games!" she squealed, clapping her hands together in jubilation. After this display of glee, her hand shot up and she volunteered herself, even though she was the only other staff member in the room. "Oh oh oh! Pick me! Pick me! I'm good at finding things! I'll be your Finder! Doesn't this sound great, Marky?".......the boy quivered on the table, then professed: "OF COURSE it doesn't! What it sounds like is I'm going to be cut up in twenty different ways by the end of the day!"
"My boy, that is the very definition of the word fun!  Just look in any books on medicine."  Nero turned back to Aike-Aike on his toes.  "Alright, Miss Aike, you're it!  Now close your eyes and I'll hide something."  Nero's shrouded eyes were already scanning the room for something to hide.
His eyes passed over a scalpel.  Ooooh...that should be fun....no, it'll cut the boy up making it obvious...let's see what else.  A sponge.  No, she'll notice it's missing.  A syringe.  Ahhh, now that'll work.  There are so many in here she'll never notice it's missing.  Note to self though, DO NOT GRAB HER'S.
"Ready when you are!" Nero spun around once on his toes as he sang the words.
Orphin tightened his grip on Darla to 'convince' her to stop struggling, and then looked at Brenden before shaking his head side to side. "Left after alarm, hadn't seen her since..." he said in a rather human voice as he then made a right and they arrived in a auditorium sized room with two large rectangle boxes on each side. All of them containing toys from as early as the 18th century. He unchained Darla and put her down on a bed while turning back to the other children. "Stay... have fun" he pointed to the boxes before heading out of the room to gather blankets and pillows, as well as the jar of candy marked 'for the good children only'.
Talin watched at Orphin walked out, then tried to follow him out, but soon as he got out, he heard a roar and then ran back in...
Silence followed after the kids were locked in the waiting room, and Leon decided to break that silence."So...I'm Leon, what are your names?" He looked at all the faces around him, and he gave a weak smile to them all.
"Alright then, carry on, Orphin." After finally reaching the front of the building, he raised an eyebrow. "What a second...if she was here, then heard the alarm, then she would have...damn it! Well, I guess I should just prepare the classroom if I can't get to her right now." He rushed down the halls, trying to reach his classroom and set it up before school started.
Kodo stood and stared at the boy who'd spoken, Leon. Casting a glance at the other children, she awaited their responses boredly. Who cared about names right now? They needed to find out where they were, and find how dangerous it really was. Judging by all of the adults actions, she decided it was best to be very cautious and to tread lightly.
"Now wait just one minute you punk!" the flabbergasted Darla cried, scooting off the bed to follow Orphin out the door. As she got there, she heard a loud roar, a roar that sent shivers through her body. Then a boy rushed through the door and back into the strange white room. She gave him a 'puhlease' sort of look, as she certainly was going to be braver than he had been. No amount of roaring could scare her! Not no way, not no how! Besides, this was her dream. She moved to follow Orphin...only to have the door shut and locked in her face.........................Across the room from Darla, peering over the edge of one of the toy boxes, was Brenna. Unlike her friend, Brenna had the sinking, god-awful feeling that no, no this wasn't a dream. It was a real place, a real time...but only the Lord could be sure where and when. Only He could protect them. Softly singing a traditional church hymn, Brenna pulled back from the box and went to join the others. "I'm Brenna," she said between verses.
Talin went over to one of the boxes, and started sifting through the toys, taking out a chess-board with some really odd-looking pieces. Then he walks to another part of the room, and starts inspecting the pieces. "Talin..." he said as he continued to look at each piece.
So, it mainly wasn't silence after all, but trying to keep up what little of a conversation the kids were having, Leon continued. "Brenna and Talin...I'm pleased to meet you both." He smiled again, with a bit more strength then last time. He looked to Brenna as he noticed her humming. "What's that song your humming? I remember it from somewhere, but can't put my finger on it..."
Giggling, Nurse Aike turned away and walked to the other side of the room. She set down her teddy and syringe on a granite countertop before putting her hands over her eyes. She was about to exclaim she was ready when something gave her pause. A voice. The memory of a stern female voice floated through her mind: Aike-Aike, love, if you keep messing around with the patients instead of doing your job then we're going to fire you...Is that understood? Huh. That was odd. She wondered who had said that. Surely she did her job well, didn't she? But, then, like the glittering white sand of the desert, Aike's breif foray into her mind ended and she forgot every bit of it. "I'm ready! Start hiding!"
Brenna shook her head at Leon. "For the Lord is our shepard. For the Lord will always keep and shelter us from harm," she sang. It wasn't exactly the best answer but she didn't really notice. Right now it was a matter of not loosing her nerve. The girl continued to madly grip her rosary, as if she thought it would fly off her neck if she let it go.
"A church hymn? Hmm...that's very interesting." Leon thought to himself, "How could anyone believe in god right now? This is no heaven, not from what I've seen outside this building."  He turned to Talin, wondering what was on his mind. It's obvious that he has no interest in those toys. Leon wasn't going to ask about it, right now, he doesn't even have a clue as to what to think, all he knows is that they're dead, and this is their afterlife.
Orphin had put down the last monster that wandered in the area outside the new 'safe-zone' for the children, only to see the Prefects just now arrive to deal with whatever came by. When they saw that Orphin had finished all of them off and was still visibly calm, they decided not to show up. He was absolutly seething with frustration at their inefficiency. What exactly are those idiots doing that takes ten prefects to pull off before cleaning a third of the area?! he thought as he got to the store room and grabbed three blankets and six pillows with one long chain, and grabbed the jar before heading back to the 'safe-zone'.
Entaru sat silently in a corner.  He didn't care about the other toys, he had his ball and that was all that mattered.  He scanned the room and eyed Darla.  He didn't know if she would end up being the bully, but it was obvious that she was a trouble maker and bullies always turned out to be trouble makers.  Bouncing his ball up and down, he muttered his name in response to Leon's question.  "Entaru..."
Nero quickly grabbed a syringe and switched his hand into a scalpel.  Turning to the boy he giggled and got to work.  "Now, no telling Ms. Aike where I put it, okay Mark?"  With a fierce slash he opened up the boy's chest in an autopsy style Y shape.  The boy screamed in agony as Nero worked.  Nero had forgotten the anesthetic...but in reality the only one who cared was the child.
He couldn't break open the boy's ribcage...then she'd know that it was in his chest.  Nero pondered for a moment and smiled.  Lifting the boy's stomach out of the way, he cut open the intestines and inserted the needle inside.  The muscles would move the needle slowly and surely until it met an obstruction or got stuck in the intestine walls.  His hand changed into a sodering iron and he cauterized the wound shut, so that the nurse would have to cut into the flesh rather than just undo his suture.  The cut was also facing the spine so the Nurse wouldn't find it easily.  He quickly replaced the stomach and cauterized the main incision shut.
"Alright! Play time!"
Kodo eyed Talin, Darla, Leon, and Entaru, the name's she had learned thus far. She glanced about as they made small talk, assuming they were trying to ease their fear. Kodo simply wished to know where she was. Perhaps she'd been in a coma for a few days after the fall, and had been placed in some sadistic orphanage, or a boarding school. Or maybe this was a jail for children, because that upperclassmen had tattled on her for taking a pencil to her eye. These children muttered around her, seeming to suspect they were dead, but Kodo knew that wasn't possible. She could feel the cold of the room. She could breath the stale air. She could smell the dust that coated the walls. Surely if she were dead she'd not be able to do any of this. Kodo simply didn't know where she was, and neither did these children. The raccoon child only smiled in amusement at her fellow prisoners ignorance.
Atticus stood patiently on the platform. He liked standing close and listening for the train before it rushed through the tunnel and the swift breeze it brought along with it. The young timber wolf looked up and down the train platform. It was awfully empty that afternoon for a train station in London's East End. He stood holding his lunch box in one hand and his school bag over his shoulder. He heard a cough from behind him. He didn't turn around to see the shady man sitting on the bench behind him. Instead he only listened with his ears pricking upwards. He could hear it. The screeching of the train on the tracks and the rush of wind through the tunnel. He also heard the man stand up and walk up behind him. He still didn't look. Finally the train reached the end of the platform, its white lights shining bright as ever. Suddenly he felt himself fly off the platform and land on the hard concrete below. The horn of the train blew and Atticus swore he saw the lights burn bright red. Then there was only black and silence. He opened his eyes and found himself in a strange place. The walls were white and looked nothing like the subway. "Wh...What? Where am I?" He asked.
Dusty put down his pen and rubbed his eyes. He looked at the large stack of unmarked papers on the left side of his desk and groaned. He reach over and picked up his mug and taking a sip, pausing at the fact that nothing was going into his mouth. He looked inside. It was empty. He sighed and put the mug down before taking off his glasses. He slid away from his desk and over to the filing cabinet. He pulled out the drawer on the bottom and dug past paper clips, pens, sticky notes, pencils, and a .44 caliber Magnum before he found what he was looking for. He pulled out the pack of cigarettes and put one to his lips, lighting it with a match, and shaking the flame out. He tossed the match into the waste basket and stood up, taking his empty mug with him. He walked out the classroom and into the hallway towards the staff lounge to find more liquid gold to fill his mug with.
His conversation being cut off and a new challenge being presented to him, he thought, "Well, I guess I should give it a go." With his bed neatly made in a corner of the room, he smiled. "I do believe my bed is in order."
While on his way to his class room, he saw Dusty walking by, it was obvious that he wasn't a morning person, so Brendan decided not to bother him. Reaching the door, he pulled out a ring of keys, there were about 5 or 6 for different locks, like his safe or files. After taking a quick moment to pick out the right one, he put it in the lock and turned it to the right, twisted the doorknob and walked into his class. The area was nice and clean, and most things were in order already, but the board was not prepared. He wrote Demon Survival 101 on the middle of the board in neat handwriting. "I hope the kids like this lesson, it's always interesting to learn about these horrid things." After writing down the date and other things, he readied a bowl for both Paws and Rosie, who were soon to arrive....hopefully.
Dusty watched as his fellow teacher, Brendan, walked past. Dusty didn't have much time to think of why Brendan hadn't said hello, instead Dusty only continued to the staff room and pushing the door open. He nodded to the prefects, teachers, and even a couple of nurses that lounged around with their cigarettes, coffee, and silence. Dusty quickly refilled his mug once he reached the full pot and left as fast as he came in. He could feel the eyes of his co-workers follow him on his way out. He walked back out into the busy hallway that seemed to be filling up with more and more children. The school day was about to begin. He manouevered his way down the hall without loosing a drop. He made his way back into the classroom, discarding his cigarette before he entered. A cloud of smoke followed him inside. He looked around and noticed that his classroom was nearly full. He smiled and walked up to the board, picking up a brand new piece of chalk. He began to write his name, the date, and his lesson: Introduction to Ritual Demonics he underlined the title and wiped his dusty hands. "Open your notebooks please, class." He walked over to his desk and looked down at his folder for the lesson and noticed something was missing. He looked back up. "Excuse me for a moment." Dusty quickly ran out into the hallway and knocked on the door to Brendan's classroom. "Brendan, do you have a copy of the Demonic textbook? I forgot mine."
While looking over his students, Brendan saw Dusty walk into his class. "Ah...yes, I do believe it's in here somewhere..." He rushed off to a freshly dusted closet and looked inside, finding large stacks of books that were either for the school, or for his own enjoyment. He looked down the bindings of books, then spotted the Demonics textbook. "Here we are, the Demonics textbook. It is fairly unusual the we are teaching a unit in that are of such great similarity." Handing him the book, he frowned, "I thought you were grumpy today, forgive me for that inference, I was only trying to avoid any negative reaction. Anyway, I must get back to teaching my class." Brendan turned back to his class, smiling. "Well, I see we have so many new faces in here, well I am Brendan Miccichè, at your service." He made a bow, and some of the kids giggled, while other kids rolled their eyes. Walking to his desk, he opened a book and stared across the room. "The world beyond these halls of this school, the one that I hope you never get lost in, is full of cruel, disgusting monsters. Many are looking to feed on you children, and won't stop at any moment to kill you, a second time." Murmurs went across the room. "Now, these monsters are not nearly as treacherous as this one; the demon. This one uses not power, but deception. When it finds you, it'll turn into something you know and love, something you remember from your past life. It'll lure you in it's trap, not waiting to eat your flesh, but your soul!" A collective gasp of fear came from the students. "But there is a good side to these beings, for our lovely 'principle', Bridgette, has formed an alliance with them, and has commanded some of the demons to bring back wandering children, yet not all of them can be trusted, so beware of their might, for they could make you fall for one of their tricks!" More whispers were exchanged by the students, and Brendan smiled. "Even with these demons being so dangerous, there are still methods to defeating them, and that's why I'm here, to teach you how to defend yourself against them...ah, there you two are!" Rosie walked into the room, with Paws in her jaws, he hung uncomfortably and made an angry face. "I finally got him out of that stupid closet, it took me ages!" Paws hissed. "I would have stayed in there if it weren't for you! I'd be safe and sound..." Dropping Paws, Rose walked over to her blow and began eating. "Come on Paws, you need to eat after all that running you did, it's more than you've done in years!" Smirking, he slowly walked over to his bowl and started eating next to Rosie. "Well, class, those are my two pets, Rosie and Paws. They won't bother you at all, as long as you leave them alone."
Kodo didn't care for candy in the slightest. Without a word she took the materials and crafted herself a bed, thinking it best not to question the man. She figured she'd find out where she was after she slept for a good time, and laid down, ignoring the man with the candy.
Dusty took the book from Brendan. "Thanks." He was on his way out when Brendan began his introduction. He smiled and walked back out and across the hallway and back into his own class, the eyes of his students quickly meeting his own. "Good morning class. Sorry about that." He walked back over to his desk and put Brendan's textbook down. One little girl in the front row raised her hand. Dusty looked up. "Yes, Melissa?" Melissa lowered her hand and spoke. "Mr. Hoffman, will we get to watch another movie today about the outside world?" Dusty frowned. "No, Melissa, I'm afraid not." One of the boys in the row next to her smirked. "Why would we watch another when we saw it yesterday, stupid?" Melissa took the words like a slap to the face.
"David! You will not EVER speak to another person like that again! Apologize to Melissa." Dusty ordered.
But, Mr. Hoffman, I-"
"NOW, DAVID!" The class flinched at the jump in Dusty's voice.
"...I'm sorry, Melissa."  The words were sour in David's mouth. A small smile grew on Melissa's face. Dusty gave her a wink.
"Now if there will be no more interruptions, open your textbook to page 105." The class did as they were told. When the class were finding the page, Dusty wrote DEATH in very large letters on the board and underlined it. "Now getting back on track, you're all probably wondering what a ritual or, more specifically, a demonic ritual is. Who here has ever been to a funeral?" Dusty asked. He watched as the entire class raised their hands. He smiled. "Well...I have a little story for you..."
Bridgette floated through the air as one would float through a sea, riding the nonexistent currents, ‘feeling’ the nonexistent breeze ruffle the raven-black feathers of her wings. Quite often she would feel a little speck of something land upon her cheek, her neck. Ash. Falling ashes. Soft, beautiful ashes always falling from an unreachable grey sky and twirling, dancing down to the burning hell that was Purgatory’s new reputation. She scanned the Victorian themed School-town as it passed below. Looking for the crumpled figure of a Second Death child. A group of monsters crying out with glee. A puddle of velvety crimson blood. Anything that would tell her what she needed to know.
Yet, so far, there had been nothing. Nothing at all. Just…the bleak.
Groaning with displeasure, Bridgette decided it was time for a spell. A simple, elementary one, but incredibly useful one nonetheless.
Holding up her fingers at an angle, the human woman uttered the first two lines and watched as wispy black strands of magic passed through, over, around them. “Find it sure, find it fast. Find it so you make it last. Give it time, but it won’t pass.” As she completed the third line, the strands suddenly went taut and straight, wispy no more. They started to extend themselves like a rope, a leash to lead Bridgette forward.
She smiled and followed in the direction they lead her, wings beating so silently and gently she almost forgot they were a part of her.
______________________
Darla was enraged at what she was seeing. Why were these kids even listening to him, let alone doing what he said? Forget the candy, the beds, the toys. This was exploitation she was dealing with here. Hands on her hips, she trotted up to Orphin and stepped in front of him. “ALRIGHT. Now whatever loony show you’re trying to pull here…It’s not going to work. I’m not going to do anything a freaky looking man in a black coat tells me to do. Never. Forget it. I should beat you up right now…I’ve taken grown men before...” As she said these words, the young hyena leaned in dangerously close to Orphin and poked his chest with a finger.
Back with the others, Brenna looked over and saw what Darla was doing. She had been making her bed as told, but not in a rush: she had been doing every part insanely carefully, with perfection, hospital corners and all, just like she used to back at home.
“Darlaaa! What are you doing?” she cried, before dropping the comforter she was turning like a hot potato and running to her best friend’s side. She pushed her out of close proximity to Orphin and stood to Darla’s side, one hand extended protectively in front of the hyena, the other still tightly gripping her precious rosary. Little did she know that, if she let go, and her rosary was seen, it would be quickly seized and destroyed and she would be punished even on her first day.
Bridgette did not tolerate anything religious in her school: rosaries, bibles, Wiccan crosses, Korans, marble Buddhas, you name it and Bridgette would find a way to destroy it.
“You’ll have to excuse Darla, sir,” Brenna said, her voice laden with anxiety. “She knows not of what she speaks.” The unicorn turned and glared at her friend. “Violence is never the answer, Darla. We need to just do what he says and find a peaceful solution.”
“Oohh ho ho, I know very well of what I speak. This guy here is cruising for a bruising!”
One seething with anger, the other dripping with fear, the two children started to gently grapple with each other for who would have control of this situation.
______________
“Oh joy, oh joy! What a fun way to pass the time before a Surgery.” Aike-Aike turned back around, ultimate glee spreading across her face faster than butter across toast. She skipped to the boy’s side. “Don’t you tell me where it is, now…” the Nurse leaned in closer and whispered the next part, her voice betraying her motive…“‘Cause that’s cheating. Buuuuut, and this is just between you and me, little guy….Aike always  wins.”
She watched him as he breathed, or tried to, a thin blood trailing from the corner of his mouth from internal damage, his chest heaving up and down at an insane rate, heartbeat wild from his trauma. Then she smiled and took four things from the pocket on her dress: one, a tiny pink book. Two, an oversized sewing needle. Three, a spool of equally oversized black thread. And, four, a tiny knife.
“Don’t think that Aike’s an idiot all  the time,” she announced, this time loud enough both the boy and the Doctor to hear. “She has a job, that she does, and she tries to do the best at it she can…That is why…she keeps stock of what she owns.”
Aike took the knife and quickly tore through the tight threads around her right wrist, connecting her hand to her arm. They made a popping sound as they broke, and as the final thread was loosed, her hand fell to the floor, cold, limp, white, like it was dead. She put down the knife gingerly and took up in its place her little blue book. Grinning, she addressed her newly removed hand. “Dearie, you remember what Aike owns don’t you? You’re smarter than her if I remember right.”
Shuddering briefly, the hand came to life. It gathered itself onto its five lithe ‘legs’ and performed a horrid sort of bow. “Oooof coursssse….I live for yooooouuuuuu….” Its voice was feminine, but odd, even more odd than Aike herself, and sounded like a nymph drowning in oil.
“Good. Then help Aike find what’s missing. I’m going to start over here.” The wolf strode to the other side of the room and opened up her book. Inside was a list of everything she owned and how much she owned of each thing. Alone, it would take forever to discover that Nero had hidden a syringe despite having this list. But with her hand, who had a brain capacity several times larger and reasoning skills to boot, it would take no time at all.
Cheaters never prosper, they say, but Aike even cheated on her own games--- and when you're slimy enough to cheat on your own games, then people don't bother to try and correct your habits.
Orphin walked over to the two and pulled them apart and knowing he was going to be yelled at or punished for trying to put fear into Darla, he unsheathed a hook and held it to Darla's neck. "If its a fight you want, wait until after Headmaster Bridgette comes back..." He put the hook away and dropped Darla next to the bed Brenna was still making. He looked visibly worn out as he went to the entrance and sat down by the door. Please come back, I really don't want to be pushed into killing children.
Talin walked over to Darla, having closed the chess set, and pulled her up and away from Brenna's bed. "That guy is not like most of the 'men' you probably know... so please don't get yourself killed trying to prove a trivial boast."
Kodo watched as the hyena, Darla, was put in her place. She found no gain in the idea of fighting an adult with a weapon that he had no problem using. Strong or not, they were still children. It was best to play it safe for the moment.
Tomorrow, however, Kodo was going to find out where they were. With her parents' training, she had no problem being stealthy. Those abilities were finally going to come in handy for something other than stealing. She only wished she'd payed more attention to the self-defence and marial arts lessons. All she could do was hide and stab people with pencils.
"Nurse Aike, you know that's cheating...that's why I've replaced what I took with one of my own.  Don't think that I don't know what you do."  Nero stated, his sing-song tone never wavering.  Nero was bluffing of course but Aike-Aike didn't know that.  Nero began singing his favorite song, transposed by himself into the range of a tenor, as he waited for the Nurse to cut the boy open.
"You lie...silent there before me
Your tears...they mean nothing to me
The wind...howling at the window
The love...you never gave...I give to you
Really don't deserve it...
But now...there's nothing you can do
So, sleep...in your only memory
Of me, my dearest mother...
Here's a lullaby to close your eyes (good-bye)
It was always you that I despised
I don't feel enough for you to cry (oh well)
Here's a lullaby to close your eyes
Good-bye, good-bye, good-bye, good-bye
So insignificant...sleeping dormant deep inside of me
Are you hiding away, lost under the sewers?
Maybe flying high in the clouds?
Perhaps you're happy without me
So many seeds have been sown in the field
And who could sprout up so blessedly, If I had died
I would have never felt sad at all
You will not hear me say "I'm sorry"
Where is the light? Wonder if it's weeping somewhere...
Here's a lullaby to close your eyes (good-bye)
It was always you that I despised
I don't feel enough for you to cry (oh well)
Here's a lullaby to close your eyes
Good-bye, good-bye, good-bye, good-bye
Good-bye..."
Dusty sat at his desk and looked up from his papers every twelve seconds. There were never any hands raised and for that he was happy. He always talked in detail that there would often never be any questions unless there was a child who needed to go to the washroom. He was still without his coffee and fel that it was inappropriate to smoke in front of the children. He was dying. He needed something to smoke or drink. He bent down and dug around in the cabinets and found the small box of nicotine patches. He struggled to get it open while children began to look up from their workbooks to see what their desperate teacher was doing. Dusty froze, the small box was hanging from his jaws while he tryed to pry it open with his teeth. He pulled it out of his mouth and looked at his students while some were cracking smiles. "What? You have work to do." The fox reminded them. The students shook their heads and went back to scribbling while Dusty went back to opening the box. The result was short of satisfactory. The box exploded sending patches all over the front of the classroom. The children roared with laughter. Dusty only smiled and shook his head while he got up to pick them all up. Instead of putting them back in the box, he applied them to patches of fur and skin all over his body. That kept the kids going.
He sat back down at his desk. He continued his work while the kids did the same but there were still minor giggles throughout the classroom. They stopped when Dusty looked up but would start up again when he went back to marking. He began to feel dizzy. He took off his glasses and wiped his eyes. The room began to spin and then everything went black. The students jumped when the loud thud of the teacher's head smacking against the table made them look up to see Dusty passed out on the floor.
Bridgette floated through the still air as one would float on a weightless sea, her flapping wings the only noise in the grey sky. She scanned the crumbling streets and buildings of the town as they passed below her: an old hotel, an old hospital, what was left of a church, some stores, a movie complex. All abandoned. Every now and then, she would think she saw what she wanted to see: a screaming child, a crumpled body, even just a bloodspot or monster squealing with glee as it ran off to hide. But each time…it proved to be just a trick of her imagination. After awhile, the alarm itself fell silent, not waiting for her to complete her duty.
“How inconvenient…” Bridgette mused. “Looks like I have to go back empty-handed….”
Just as she spoke this otherwise dismissive comment, an unholy scream ripped through the air and shattered the thin ties of regularity. It was a young voice, a girl…a child. Coming from a spot just a few blocks away.
Bridgette smiled. She sent a mental message back to Orphin, her head Prefect, and the one she could trust to actually hear and listen to her: I found a child. It’s not a Second-Death one, but it’s one nonetheless….I can’t seem to find the one that died. Just keep the new ones there and keep them satisfied. They might even fall asleep on you anyway. Death is a tiring thing.
Aike jumped when she heard those words. Don’t think I don’t know… But he couldn’t know. He couldn’t. That was no fair. She was supposed to be in control here. ”Oh, I’m sure,” she chastised, as she watched her hand wander the room out of the corner of her eye. She looked through the cupboards on the left side of the room. Everything checked out, but if Nero had replaced an object with one of his own like he said….if he was smarter than her….
“Oooooh you jerk!” Aike cried, standing up and slipping her notebook back in her pocket abruptly, but just as quickly her hands flew to her muzzle and she quieted herself. She was behaving like a little brat, a little brat of whom even cheating wasn’t enough to let them win. And she didn’t want to look like a brat in front of a Doctor.
Besides, she hadn’t lost all the way just yet. She’d only lost half of the game. She still had the other half to go. The fun half.
Give it up, hand. He’s too smart for us idiots.
Oooooohhhh, buuut neveeerrrr….Iiii’mmm peeeerrfectly fffine looooking for whaaat’s missing…Yooouuu caan’t just falll for him that eeeasy.
Aike squinted and looked over at her hand, watching as it rifled through cupboards and under-sink compartments. Then she rolled her eyes. Whatever. Go ahead. Guess I don’t need two hands to do this….do I? She walked back to the boy’s side, and as she went quickly realized she needed to guess before doing anything. It was a rule. A rule that would be too difficult for her to skirt around. Sighing, she turned to Nero and started to think. She was too dense to think or plan beyond an elementary school level…..so immediately decided to equate the object Nero had hidden to……to one of her favorite things in all of Purgatory. Because favorite things are often the first things that come to mind. Patting down her dress, she said: “Did you hide one of my syringes, Doctor? I love syringes. They’re all I can think about sometimes. You should know that isn’t functional inside a body. But I’m probably wrong anyway……..Don’t tell me whether or not ‘till I find it, though.”
Giving a last glance at her hand as it continued to ransack the place, it sunk in to Aike that the crazy thing had gone out-of-commission and wasn’t going to do anything she said until she picked it up and sewed it back on. Therefore….she would need another, one-handed tool if finding the object wasn’t going to be a disaster. “…..Never thought I’d have to use this.”
The sickening shhhlink of metal against flesh resounded as Aike’s ‘blade’ slid out of her arm. She brought the tip of the gleaming silver blade to her muzzle and tested her tongue against it….quite promptly she tasted her own blood. It tasted like lavender oil. The nurse closed her dark eyes, feeling inexplicably happy with her Afterlife. “Hmmmm….mmm….mmmmm………mmmmhhhhmmm. Still sharp. It’ll work. Now if only I can remember how to do this....'cutting' thingy…”
Aike’s getting the Nursing job had been an utter miracle. After all, she was not only clumsy, she often forgot how to do even the simplest medical procedures just like she forgot everything else solid and concrete. But Bridgette had been low on staff at the time, and even the most low-down of Purgatory wanderers that stumbled though the front gates could be offered a job if they asked.
She lowered her blade to the spot just below the boy’s collarbone. It rested up against something solid when she had been expecting something soft…but no matter. Sucking in a nervous breath and holding it, Aike haphazardly dug her blade into the boy, cutting through bone and cartilage alike, neither knowing nor caring how she should have really gone about this.
Then she kept cutting down, down all the way past the boy’s stomach, making a jagged gash of a cut that only a Frankenstein monster would be able to appreciate. The boy, incomprehensive but still awake, howled.
Darla pouted towards the boy. “Oh, well don’t think you’re so smart, kid. I happen to be very ticked off here….but you’re right. I don’t need to be fighting somebody with weapons like that…” Finally giving up the guff, she started to help Brenna finish her bed.
“That’s it,” Brenna said once they were done. “There’s always a way to make things end up nice and peaceful. When that one lady gets back, we can talk to her, huh?” Yawning, the Christian child let go of her rosary, letting it fall back down into it’s normal spot. It glinted in the white light. She climbed up on her bed and laid down. “Maybe we could all pray.”
“Pray? Pray? Girl, what are you smoking? God ain’t here right now.” Darla crawled up next to her friend and laid down beside her. “What we need to do is give that jerk what’s coming to him.”
“Darla….don’t say things like that. God’s everywhere. All the time. In every one of us. We pray through Jesus, his son, and…” Brenna trailed off and started to play with her rosary, holding it between two fingers and turning it back and forth, watching as the light danced off its silver surface.
Orphin nodded, but his reply was only a Yes Mistress... as he got up and walked over to Talin, who had taken out the chess board again after making his bed. "Uh... you wanna play a game with me?" Orphin nodded and sat down cross-legged as they both set up the chess game.
The chess board was rather ugly in how well-done the design was, the board had a sheen that almost looked wet and the boarders were bulging with almost flesh-like features. The pieces were even more disturbing, the white pieces were made of marble, and the pawns looked alot like children with various pitful features that looked like they were supposed to be dead. The Rooks were similar to the giant Pre-fect Orphin had floored earlier, and the Bishops were wearing doctor uniforms and carrying bonesaws. Not a single piece was similar to another, like the chess game was literally made by more than one idea and person. The oddest thing about the white pieces was that a figure similar to Orphin was labeled with "Queen" at the base, and one similar to Bridgette was labeled "King". It was probably because without the markings, people would have them confused and have the Orphin piece as King.
"Do you know who made this?" Orphin nodded, and took out the black pieces, all of them looking like various demons, their designs similar to their positions on the board. "I made the black pieces and the King piece... 'she', made the rest of the white pieces." Talin nodded in acknowledgement as they started their game, Orphin keeping a look-out for anyone who was trying to leave through the only door in the room.
Standing at the entrance to the tunnel, Bridgette used an incantation to call forth a glimmering yellow flame that would serve as a light source in the tar-black dark, flame that sprouted from between her gloved fingers like nothing. The sound of the scream had led her here…to a dank, horrible place that--- be she a fool to admit it ---Bridgette herself feared even more than she feared what laid beyond town limits.
For this was the tunnel that led down into the Underground.
Wretched be the child foolish enough to run there.
And horrid be the Headmistress who had been too slow to stop her.
The woman swallowed, nulling over a frightened lump in her throat….She turned and scanned the area, across the street at the empty store fronts, the reflections on their glass windows playing tricks with the unseen light. Then she turned and looked both ways down the unused street….nothing….It was true. The child wasn’t up here….she had truly gone down into the tunnel.
“No one can blame you for walking away
But too much protection
no love rejection.
Life can be easy
it's not always well
Don't tell me truth hurts
little girl
'cause it hurts like hell,”
 Bridgette sung slowly, each word parting from her lips with the utmost care. Orphin and the other Prefects she had a Link with would be able to hear her, but she didn't care. They might as well know that she was feeling uneasy and scared.
Sighing, she held up the flame in front of her and began to walk down into the tunnel. Each stair was narrow, concrete, the two walls on each side wet with leaking water and crawling with undesirable algae and a few tiny parasites. Down, down, down, further and further she went…
“But down in the underground you'll find someone true
Down in the underground
a land serene and crystal.
It's only forever
not long at all.”
Nero watched as Aike clumsily sliced the boy apart in search for the missing object.  She had guessed correctly but the probability of her finding it was slim.  No doubt it had moved farther down into the boy's lower intestines, his body believing it to be some strange new food to be digested.
If his eyes weren't already covered, Aike would have seen him staring longingly at her.  Despite her clumsy nature, Nero felt that there was a grace in her movements (though many would severely disagree with him) and imagined what it would be like to spend eternity with her, rather than around her.
"Let's see....well, it's not in there...."   Aike said this as she 'pushed' the boy's ribcage back into place......leaving untold cartilage and muscle ripped and several of the ribs themselves askew......earlier, she had ripped the ribcage open and searched through the top half of his insides before coming to the slow-witted conclusion that it wasn't up there. As the last bone popped back into what she considered a normal place, blood spurted from some random organ she had punctured and compromised in her hasty mess, splattering wildly across her face and uniform. She took in a breath, stepping back from the table and shaking her head. "......Ewwwww, Doctor, you didn't say I'd get it on me...." she complained...."I wasn't that bad at the cutting, was I?" Aike eyed Nero, or, since she could not see his face, tried to. Then, in an unbelievably rapid change in emotion she shrugged, smiling. This was just a game. Right. Right? Just a game. She should relax. No need to get all worked up. She walked back to the table and started on the other half of her procedure. "You know, when Aike wants to feel good, she sings too. Just like you did, Doctor. But sometimes....she forgets how it goes. She sings it, but somehow she knows it's not the right words....." The wolf thought about it for awhile, working slower now, then finally decided that it was all right if she sang. No-one should care if she sang...not if it made her feel better.
"....anyone lived in a pretty how town
(with up so floating many bells down)
spring summer autumn winter
he sang his didn't he danced his did
Women and men(both little and small)
cared for anyone not at all
they sowed their isn't they reaped their same
sun moon stars rain
children guessed(but only a few
and down they forgot as up they grew
autumn winter spring summer)
that noone loved him more by more
when by now and tree by leaf
she laughed his joy she cried his grief
bird by snow and stir by still
anyone's any was all to her
someones married their everyones
laughed their cryings and did their dance
(sleep wake hope and then)they
said their nevers they slept their dream
stars rain sun moon
(and only the snow can begin to explain
how children are apt to forget to remember
with up so floating many bells down)
one day anyone died i guess
(and noone stooped to kiss his face)
busy folk buried them side by side
little by little and was by was
all by all and deep by deep
and more by more they dream their sleep
noone and anyone earth by april
wish by spirit and if by yes.
Women and men(both dong and ding)
summer autumn winter spring
reaped their sowing and went their came
sun moon stars rain."
Orphin almost snapped the chess piece he worked almost a day on when he heard the song. He immeadeatly got up and almost went out the door, but thought first to ask. Are you sure you're alright on your own Mistress, I'll gladly have someone else watch the children in my place... Talin noticed Orphin wasn't trying to hide his uneasiness, it almost looked like he would probably break the doors down just to leave the room.
......In truth, I may really need your help, Orphin. You know what sorts of thing lie down here in the Underground and how they make me cringe. Feel free to get a another babysitter and head over to back me up. But don't expect me to wait for you. I need to hurry if I'm gonna retrieve this child alive.
Bridgette continued onward. Once the stairs came to an end, she found herself on an even plane of concrete floor. Water was everywhere, leaking from some sort of pipe system. The flame in her hand kept dancing, turning the room into a tapestry of color. Every few meters she could see chain-link fences, set up in various perimeters to seperate one part of the maze from the other......Swallowing, the Headmistress walked around the edge of one of the fences, wondering when the child would finally reveal herself and how just far she had gone into this maze.
Orphin nodded, and looked at Talin. "I'll be off, another will come to watch over in my place, please don't wander off. Or there really will be a second-dead that I will have to get as well." Talin nodded and went back to inspecting the pieces. Then went into a rather new chest on the far right corner, and pulled out a gaming device with a game still inside. Talin played the game while Orphin left the room and put a 'becon' at the spot outside the door, so that any teacher or prefect who came across this area would have a feeling that there were children in here that needed to be kept in there.
He let his wings sprout out of the opening of his jacket and flew off at much faster speed than what Bridgette could do. She probably designed me to hunt monsters rather than protect the school, but whatever the reason, I will definatly catch up to her.
In moments after he started flying, he was at the tunnel and had retracted his wings so he could run into the tunnel...
((Quick, run before an adult arrives :P))
