also, a good habit that i've gotten into is listening to podcasts (Though I don't have an Ipod). Listen to stuff that's as varied as possible because podcasts have little to no barrier to entry and only have self imposed rules and regulations. They are normal people who say what they want to say, which means you can use that to understand different people and how they think and speak. Personally, I keep track of a married middle class family in a Cleveland suburb, Two working class south London guys, two upper-middle class cambridge educated guys, one of which is from South Africa. There's also two gaming podcasts I listen to, one from britain, one from Australia, and there is one podcast I listen to which has a Texan guy living in Canada, a guy living in Utah and a guy living in Colombia... oh and also the Post-up Podcast with T. Matt Latrans, your Coyote on the court. It's a fictional sports commentator comenting on a fictional sport but it's made by a proper sports guy so he speaks and acts the same as sports commentators would. It's interesting to hearing the colloquialisms and abbreviations in the language.

also, try basing a couple off of different aspects of your personality.

thats also another thing, like choosing a name.
I wonna pick really good names (names that mean things) but i might not like the name i choose and all that so i just need to find really good names.
is there a site or something that gives good names and tells the meanings on them?
-
not that i know of. When I came up with the names for my characters, Shinzuu, Korius, Valius, Valia, I chose those names based on what they are and what their personalities are like, not really any actual meaning, word-wise. Shinzuu was a name I coined few years back because it popped into my head when I looked at the character and his personality. Valius, he was created as a warrior, a knight, a symbol of valor and justice. Valia was basically a female version, one of the times it's ok to be lazy. long-story short, look at the character you create and base your name on what kind of character they are. Names only have to mean something to you, and no one else. People always thought Shinzuu was a retarded name for 5 years. Now, it's a very commonplace name used in fan-fics (mainly dragonballz fanfics, idk why) and games. who knows? you might come up with a name you could call your own.

I go to baby naming sites. They often have meanings and the country of origin. Though that said, I've never really been properly satisfied with the names I choose. I find that the best names are ones that sound like a certain image. I love using names like Kaiser for impressive people. And I once used the name Astrid Fairchild for a supermodel. They sound silly, but that's partly because my stories are often quite silly.

dude, i know the lot of us experienced writers treat our projects like they're our children, but seriously, a baby naming site?

Babies have the same names as adults, which is why I always find it weird when I hear of an old person with the same name as my little cousin sister.
