Look, look at me! I'm still alive!
As many of you may have noticed (or not) I've been a little..absent lately. Real life has this knack of creeping up and dragging you off kicking and screaming until you participate in it.
Nearly 18 months ago I started a new job which has me working a healthy 45 hours a week (mostly) and keeps the bills paid, but like all jobs, it's tiring and my weekends tend to be mostly family time.
I do apologize though for disappearing and not being as active on here.
Last night I ran a server update to increase performance and missed a part of the update which meant that for some, features such as posting, editing profiles, marking topics as read, etc did not work correctly. I fixed the remaining issues whilst at work today.
I've just completed the portal to try and decrease the time it takes to load. One other benefit of this is the shoutbox now works correctly and doesn't need to be refreshed to show updates! I will be putting the old look back on it soon, just waiting to grab the old design - I may have forgotten we'd changed it.
I'm hoping in the coming months to get some more things done around here and work directly with WingedZephyr to improve the forums and bring them back to how they once used to be. Since my absense it seems that things have become a little chaotic. It will be dealt with.

little chatic aint the word for it i swear most of the reports come from me at times but its great to know the issues are fixed and yea life is a pain in the behind
-
Thanks tweak! It's very appreciated :D
-
Good to hear from you, Tweak.
-
Awesome Tweak!
Thanks :)
-
Many thanks! :D
Although I don't see any avatars anymore in the shoutbox :o
-
They were removed in the update, they may be added back in later.
-
Well, welcome back. I'm glad to hear you're well. And not dead. XD
-
Wellll, technically I just said I was alive, not that I wasn't dead. Perhaps I'm actually a zombie? Or something equally terrifying and evil and Tweak-like!
-
Tweak, the almighty Dracolich!
-
For those who haven't noticed, the gender options in the profile have been extended.

SSL has now been enabled for the forums. Currently it's not forced. Just go to https://thefurryforum.com to use it.

sweet now we can all feel safer on the forums (sites with ssl for those who dont know encrypt passwords and are normally harder to attack to get info from)
-
Is it odd I am not experiencing the SSL? I don't see it 'activated', as it were. Whether I'm logged in or not, my browser isn't showing there is an SSL connection.
-
Make sure you navigate to https specifically, right now it doesn't force the use, this will be coming in a few weeks once I know there are no teething problems.
-
Thanks for your response, Tweak :)
It does seem to already add https for me (link to this topic looks like this) :

So I don't know if I'm doing something wrong?
-
@Ventus - Then it should be fine.
@Michen - There is still some mixed content which may cause some browsers to not show the site as fully secure. This will be fixed.
-
You see Secure Socket layer??? (SSL)
I was under the impression normal members didn't see SSL.
-
If this helps Firefox doesn't reckon your site is secured when navigating to a thread.
When it's a board (outside of a thread but looking over the forum index) it is seen as secured, but inside a thread it isn't secured.

To just make it clear: I browse mostly on Chrome, and with other websites which have an SLL connection I do see it. I know what it looks like (I might not be a professional, but I know a bit about website building and putting them online, I make websites myself now and again) XD
-
That was to Tweak, not to you xD
I was telling tweak what conditions cause browsers to say TFF isn't secure.
-
Apologies, Anoni ^^;
I didn't see you replied to Tweak, I thought you were trying to tell me I should use Firefox or something xD
-
There were some changes made to the software versions tonight. This should lead to improved performance.
However, there may be a few bugs as a result of these changes. Please let me know if you come across any.

Is that the reason why I couldn't post things?
-
great job as always Tweak
did let you know of the bug, good thing it was fix without major issues
-
IRC has been removed due to lack of use. Although a minimal performance impact, it seemed pointless to be running something that was not used.
-
So what benifits to the site are there with SSL?
-
Generally it makes us more secure, your data is all encrypted whilst being sent to and received from the forums.
It also is the new standard - many browsers are starting to warn on non-SSL websites, Google changes it's search results on it, etc.
Finally, things should be faster. Using SSL allows the use of HTTP2 which is considerably faster than HTTP1 is, it causes less calls to the server and thus also lowers the load.

yea just need to apply it site wide now for reading and loading thread pages

I was under the impression it already was

It currently doesn't force everything to be HTTPS if an image, etc is still HTTP it won't force the change.
It's on the books to do, I just haven't got to it yet.

thanks for all the great info Tweak, really help out
thanks for all the hard work

OH MY GOSH! AN UPDATE!
As you know, we are constantly working to improve the forum experience for everyone. On Friday evening, the forums were migrated to a new server which provides some higher specifications as well as upgraded software. The changes should be minimal although some speed increases will be noticeable.
As always with migrations, areas may have been missed or still require tuning, please report any bugs or issues you notice in the relevant board so we can look into it.
Fortunately, as technology becomes better, the cost of equipment becomes cheaper, as a result, the donation goal has been updated to more accurately display the cost of running everything, I am still the primary financial provider for the server and continue to cover any costs we incur, your donations go towards lessening the load on my own finances and reducing the failure point in terms of payment.
-
are we on a Threadripper server now? XD
-
Forum software has been updated, this improves GDPR support as well as enhances various security.
You will have to relogin due to updates to how cookies are secured.
-
Oh is that why I was suddenly logged out?
-
ok, made sense
for some strange reason, the first two times I tried to log in it said
"username doesn't exist"
I waited five minutes and tried to log in again, went normally
