Could your fursona get sunburn?
« on: July 15, 2017, 12:37:30 PM »
So I'm enjoying the little sun available up here in Oilfishvikingland, and got this idea for a poll.

I voted to "Yes on any part" mainly because canines (my main character being a wolf) can get sunburned, even with fur covering on the body. They are less-likely, but it is possible. There is only one major area that is unable-to-be-burned in that fashion and that would be the lower legs (prosthetic lower-legs on my character, so no organic lower-legs).

She can get sunburnt. But it most likely won't show.
What would though is the fur turning a more blondish color due to the sun.

I am 1/16th red dragon so am generally immune to heat damage, however because I grew up beneath the hole in the ozone layer I have developed a sensitivity to the sun on my softest parts.

Dang, that's a good question. I never really thought about that at all. I mean maybe their nose can get sunburned as for ears, maybe inside of ears but I'm not certain of it.

Fable is actually quite sensitive to being in direct sun for too long. while a burn would be pretty rare it would dry out their scales, mess up their shed cycle, cause some stuck shed, and even really mess up Fables eyes to be in direct sun for an extended period of time.
Ali and Talon are not as susceptible but they can get small burns, especially Ali's sensitive ears.

No. My fursona is a feral snow leopard, and they are unable to get a sunburn. Snow leopards live up in the mountains, and in the summer the chance of getting a sunburn is actually higher on snow-covered mountain tops than on the beach if you're not protected against it in some way. Thankfully, snow leopards have a very thick, two-layered fur that protects them well from both freezing and sun burns.
Sunstrokes, however, is a different issue entirely. Though Michen won't be able to show all of the symptoms, they can get it in warm areas and summers. In those situations they shouldn't be in direct sunlight for long, at least not without a way to cool down, from late morning to early evening.

Nope, my fur is thick enough to pretty much deflect rays! Though I might get heat stroke.

The insides of his ears, his nose and a small strip of flesh around the shoulder mount for his arm. The metal rubs at the fur and thins it, exposing his skin enough for it to get burned obviously.
