Funky Foods!
« on: April 14, 2017, 06:08:18 AM »
Quick little topic to start out on these forums.
I propose a question:
-What is the weirdest thing you've ever eaten and actually liked?

This could include random creations, food from other cultures, and/or culinary disasters!

I'll go first...
About a year ago, I was studying the food of Eastern Asia and I came across two things:
Century eggs (boiled egg allowed to sit and "rot" for years and years) if you haven't experienced this diabolical delecasy, consider yourself lucky.

And something called Balut. It's basically a fertilized bird (primarily mallard) egg that is boiled. Balut is odd because not only is it boiled but you don't take its shell completely off. So not only do you get that mess to eat, you also get a little crunch when you crack the top of the shell open.
I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to try it during my studies.
To go quickly, the top of the egg was cracked open, revealing you-know-what, and then sprinkled salt and vinegar over. I picked some out and it tasted, well, odd. The mallard inside tasted like chicken oddly enough but the consistency mixed super well with the natural juices and salt/vinegar.

Your turn!

There was this thing a crisp company in the UK had been selling, a Cheese and Onion chocolate bar. It was actually pretty good, but at the time it was quite mixed reception, some people liked it and others didn't like it. It was a limited edition chocolate bar though, so sadly they don't sell them anymore.
I have had dumplings from China and they tasted awful one of the worst things I have eaten honestly! I wonder why it's Asia that both have these terrible tasting dishes haha
I'm don't think I would be brave enough to try those dishes honestly
Btw I am new to the forums and quite shy so if you want to PM i'm up for it :)

Well a lot of people might think I am lying but I actually really like Durian.

I got it at this international market for a cook off and although I didn't serve there I did enjoy it on my own. But remember the fresher the better. If you wait to long it gets pretty gross.

Apparantly the smell is bad but the taste is good according to some articles.

Not foods, but drinks. And its tame
If you've ever had moxie it's a bitter cola from the eastern U.S. Quite good, but again, bitter. Slightly metallic.
One soft drink I'd love to have again was a pecan soda dubbed "Swamp pop". It was sweet, yet had the savory taste of pecans.
And, of course, my heretical practice of putting hazelnut creamer into orange spice tea.

wow im boring

Was in the wonderful land of France on a school trip about a year ago and we visited a snail farm, where they offered fresh Escargot !
It was really weird and garlic'y but was actually pretty good. Probably would have been better if I wasn't freaking over the fact I had just eaten a snail  XD

Quite good though and would do it again, everyone should try escargot at least once ;)
