You usually play the cabinet into the PA system. Amp sims are shit. Can't just skip that..

Dude, any amp will do is what I'm getting at.
If you use distortion then it doesn't matter if you have a small $50 amp or a $1000 cabinet.

Don't get me wrong though dude, if you can afford a cabinet then go for it, because they are seriously awesome to have. I'm just thinking like the poor student I am

Well, it's the thing that it isn't the EFX like Distortion, Tube amps have a certain way of taking that signal and turning it into a better sound then some.

Oh I know dude. Beautiful sound.
At the end of the day though, its the amplification of a weak electronic signal into a stronger one.

Like I said though, if you can afford it, go for it.

I'm just using my Boss ME-80 plugged into a Yahama home theater AVR and then from there into my fancy KEF-Q100 + REL T-7 speaker and subwoofer setup or, if I wanna be more quiet, a pair of Sennheiser HD650 headphones. For most part.

I also have a cheapish Vox amp I've had since I got my first guitar, though it doesn't get a whole ton of use lately as I think the home theater setup sounds better.

...
Really should upgrade my amp XP

I've had an (acoustic) guitar for awhile but I've just recently(i.e. New Year's) started to seriously learn how to play it. I'd like to try looking for an electric guitar sometime though since that's the kind of stuff I like. I don't need anything fancy, at least until I can actually play something ^^'

Those look pretty nice. ...And there's a purple one X3 I'll probably ask my friend too since he's been playing guitar for quite awhile.

A great started electric guitar series is the Gibson Epiphones, Jackson has a few, and maybe a few Dean's like a Dean MLX if you want a unique guitar. There are plenty of options, and there's really no wrong answer if it sounds good to you and you like it. ^~^
