Games teaches you more English than schools?
« on: March 18, 2010, 03:13:03 PM »
I just read this in the newspaper:
(note, the article is translated from Swedish to English with google translate, let me know if there are any grammar mistakes of something)

Quote from: Metro - Sweden
Games makes guys better than girls in English

School Boys, more English words than girls. The reason: They play more games on the internet. "The boys have poorer results in everything - except vocabulary."

Swedish school boys have a larger English vocabulary than girls. The explanation: the boys surf more on the net - and play more computer games. It shows a study at Karlstad University.
- When playing video games so you have to both speak and write, you can do it in an environment which is safe and it gives much repetition. So computer games are not bad for the English language, at least, "says Pia Sundqvist, lecturer in English who conducted the study during an academic year with 80 students in grades nine.

Boys spend an average of 43 percent of the time they come into contact with English in their free time for computer games and internet.

For girls, the corresponding figure is only 6 percent. Despite the fact that girls have higher grades and are generally better in school English, they have a smaller vocabulary than boys.

The study attributes this to the boys' activities to a greater extent than activating vocabulary such as music and television viewing, which predominates among the girls.
- The guys in my study have worse results in all but a great vocabulary. The girls are doing well without computer games, and they would spend as much time as the guys at the computer, they would probably do extremely well in school, "says Pia Sundqvist.

That makes sense for non-english speaking countries, especially in europe because online games have multinational servers, and people just use english as the common language. I'm guessing the same applies for websites.
"Parents always think kids are wasting their youth, and always have done [so] down through the millennia," says Tom Forsyth of RAD Game Tools. "'That Ug, always holding things. His front paws will develop in funny ways. Why can't he walk on all fours like normal proto-hominids?' And so, whatever the kids spend the most time doing, that's always what parents think is a waste of time, and what is corrupting their lives. It doesn't matter what that is. If all they did was homework, parents would be worrying that their kids aren't becoming well-rounded people. And, in fact, parents do this - enrolling math nerds in karate classes and the like. There is no way to win - parental paranoia ensures that kids are always doing the wrong thing."

That's interesting...  But as technology becomes more intuitive and sophisticated this isn't surprising to me.  The younger generations get more attracted to it and spend the majority of their time on whatever.

I learned a lot from games, even living in America. True, i pay more attention to this laptop than to my parents or teachers, but that's beside the point. (so what if i didn't learn how to debate that well. who really cares, easier for you to defeat me in arguments) I almost auto-correct typos in the fast-paced gaming where you gotta type, click, and keep an eye on the screen all at the same time.  :S it's very odd. People think of me as the "nerd" "moron" "untouchable" and so many other terms of endearment, but really, i'm brilliant. i've got a few writings on my hard drive i may post in a random section later.  ^_^ i like to write when bored.

Math for me:
bored = constructive
having fun = blowing things up, burning things, smashing things, killing things on games, general carnage,

i am the GO TO person when it comes to fixing a cpu problem, but otherwise, it's "sit in your own little world" or "GTFO" or "RULE 93". i am very unpopular. but WGAS!

Have you ever read any RPG core rulebooks? I had a teacher who based spelling tests off of them!

well that depends /\

if you learn english in a non-english school, then yes its going to not be very good or have a high standard, BUT if you learn english in an english speaking school you pick it up MUUUUCH quicker then you would playing games or learning it a non-english school

debatable.  -_- I find that i can talk MUCH better on a game, be it typed or over a Ventrillo. However, in person, i stutter more than Scatman. i can't talk to them that well. I learn more from AI than from people it seems....
