Title: Coalition Operations IV: Monsters of the Past

A slipspace rupture opened up, and the UNSC Allegiance appeared not far from Gamma Halo. On the bridge, a Spartan and a black-color armored Sangheili stood on the bridge.

"Status?" the Spartan - Andrew - requested.

"All systems nominal, Commander," reported the canine at the helm.

"Weapons on standby, ready to fire at moment's notice - Turbolasers, Plasma Turrets, and the MAC guns are primed," reported the human at Tactical.

"So what now, Andrew?" the Sangheili - Zuka - asked.

"Command said there would be others joining us... so we wait, for now," Andrew told his Sangheili companion.

"Longer we wait, the closer those Iron bears get to releasing the Flood, intentional or no," Zuka whispered.

"I don't like it any more than you, Zuka, but orders are orders," Andrew whispered back. "They shouldn't be long." He directed a comment to his shipboard AI. "Orion, get to work getting into the Iron Bears' comms. Let me know when you're in."

Orion appeared in his hologram form. "Aye, sir," he responded.

The door to the bridge opened,  as a nine tailed fox in customized set of Mjolnir armor, stepped onto the bridge, grumbling as she stepped onto the bridge as she looked outside the window. "So this is what those 'halo' things look like, doesn't look like much, and you say this thing is a super weapon and a containment laboratory?" The nine tailed fox asked, clenching her fist a fireball that was in her right hand extinguishing in a small puff of smoke. "I thought the reports said the UNSC decommissioned most of these."

Quite soon, after the vulpine, Darvo has appeared on the bridge with Zuka and Andrew. It's been a while since the Turian was on a mission with someone else. He is a monster, a socially dangerous creature that should be contained forever somewhere on Kessel. That's why before the operation, Pax asked the two if they can accept him for the mission. But at the same time, he won't be included in the official report. Because by all reports, Darvo is a long-dead man. Course, Andrew, and Zuka were surprised as well. But being a monster has some disadvantages. Beast has given the host everything the Turian wanted - the power, the future, prestige! With the help of symbiote, the Palaven' native is capable of things, where even the Rokhah can't. However, hunger is the reason for Darvo's loneliness. Luckily, the mission on the Halo is the one, where no one may repute Beast as a potential threat for everyone. More like a weapon that needs to be controlled. Iron Bears mercenaries would be a nice meal for the creature from Klyntar.

"Gentlemen. May I ask you if you have read my application? There were a couple of things you need to know about me first.". Darvo asked, right after he had saluted. His armor was shimmering with a blue light like it was made from sapphire. Sure thing, he has noted the fox and her question and wanted to know the answer likewise. But he wanted to be sure that the commanders are aware of who Darvo is. But Beast has also noted the tod and reacted immediately in Pax's mind. "Watch for the nine-tailed. Ideally, stay away from her in a fight, or you'll become a food.".

"Clearly, someone read your application, and considered you fit for the job - else, you wouldn't be here," Zuka responded to Darvo.

"Easy, Zuka," Andrew cautioned the Sangheili. "Let's not offend him."

"Sir, I have a ship in orbit," the Operations Officer piped up.

"Identify," Andrew commanded. There was a pause, then the officer responded,

"Looks like a retrofitted  USCM Capital Ship  (https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/avp/images/8/8d/Sulaco_approach.JPG/revision/latest?cb=20141110195457) - IFF Transponder labels it as the USS Verloc, commanded by the Iron Bears mercenary group," the officer responded.

"Hail them," Andrew commanded. The officer complied, then shook her head.

"No response, Commander. Sir, they're... they're powering weapons!"

"Ready on the guns, shields at maximum," Zuka commanded.

"Awfully jumpy - a ship hails them, and they power weapons," Andrew chuckled. "Why am I not surprised?"

Awfully suspicious..." Blaze grumbled, wishing she were on the ground where she could actually do something, instead of in the void of space...

"I'm not offended. But... any orders, captain? Also, are there any signs of a potential boarding from the hostiles?". Turian asked, watching through the window with no fear. The Turian was rather thinking over his plan in case of close contact. With Beast's help, Darvo would tear all of them apart with no problems. Iron Bears are just ordinary mercenaries with no major powers aside from their numbers. But Pax has no private ship or any means to fly. So executing orders is the only thing he can do the moment.

"Weapons ready, Commander," tactical piped up.

"Fire the MAC guns," Zuka and Andrew said simultaneously. There was a thump! that reverberated through the hull as two MAC slugs were fired on the Verloc. The ship's shields took the hit, and the ship listed briefly to port. Immediately, the Verloc returned fire, and her gauss slugs splashed against the Allegiance's shields. "You'd think they'd have taken the hint," Andrew sighed.

"They're mercenaries illegally present and running an operation on one of the Forerunner Halo Rings, Andrew - do you really think they'd just stand down and talk?" Zuka chuckled.

"Very well - Plasma Torpedoes, full salvo, ready on the turbolasers; Helm, attack speed, let's close in for the kill," Andrew sighed wearily. He then turned to the others present as the ship vibrated slightly getting underway. "Any of you familiar with Orbital Drop Pods?"

But Darvo seemed to be not bothered with the upcoming battle. As the crew was talking, his gaze was focused on the Halo. He didn't know too much about the Installation. However, the Turian was aware of the Flood. Just as Klyntar, Flood is also a parasitic life form. What would happen if both types start to fight? And how each of them would impact on each other? That is what worried the ex-Hierarchy trooper for real and the symbiote inside him. In case things go wrong, Blaze can do a favor and burn him. To purify, so to speak. Because it's unclear what's going to happen in case of merging Klyntar and the Flood. It can be Pax's death, yet it's much better than a new, potentially dangerous enemy. The Galactic Society and chiefly the DMC, have too many things to care about. Someone might ask the Turian why the Turian opted for such a mission. But then the alien would state, that is what Klyntar made for. To fight monsters akin to him. No one will mourn for him anyway.

"Drop pods? Guess, we have to evacuate? Shouldn't we try to board them first?". Darvo asked with a calm voice. Just like Beast, Pax hates to fall back without a proper battle first as fight means food. However, Darvo managed to convince Beast that there will be plenty of meals down on Halo's surface.

"Drop Pods, Darvo, not Escape Pods. We're dropping an initial attack force to secure a beachhead via Orbital Drop Pods," Andrew explained.

"Sir, the Verloc is firing again!" Tactical proclaimed. The ship shuddered as a dual shot of Gauss slugs impacted against the shields, followed by missiles. The Allegiance fired a burst of Plasma Torpedoes and another shot from the MAC guns. The Verloc's shields were wrecked by the MAC shots, one of which tore through the ship's mid-decks. The plasma torpedoes hit next, burning away hull armor like paper. The ship's lights flickered, then the engines died.

"You've got to be kidding me," Zuka scoffed. "That's it? That's all they had for orbital resistance? How the hell did they think this was gonna go?"

"They are mercenaries illegally present and running an operation on one of the Halo Rings under the noses of the USR - they didn't expect anyone to find them here, and any more would have drawn attention. Ten to one, that ship is modded with an illegal cloaking device. One cloaked ship leaves less of a print than several," Andrew explained.

"And you really don't think the Iron Bear mercenaries wouldn't have reinforcements hiding somewhere?" Zuka countered. "This..." he indicated the disabled Verloc. "... this is too easy. Too clean. One outdated USCM Warship against a retrofitted UNSC Punic-class Supercarrier and escorts that could deploy or slip in at a moment's notice? It doesn't make sense, even for a cloak-and-dagger operation. They should have reinforcements waiting out-system - something far more advanced than that. They'd use some form of cover to hide their cloaked signatures, and drop in when the word is given."

"How do you know that, Zuka?" Andrew asked, "You never paid much heed to mercenaries."

The Sangheili looked to his Spartan companion. "It's what I'd do. What any military or mercenary commander would do when running an operation like this."

"It would be wise of them to hide reinforcements nearby," Blaze noted. "this is just a scout for the pack." She added "The others may come soon, what's the plan of attack?" THe nine tailed fox asked,  her tails flailing in the air....

"Indeed, it can be a lure. I suggest to retire and wait for what may happen. That is the best option at the moment. As for me, I'm going to pods. I'm also would like to hear the exact coordinates to drop. Can't wait to smash some skulls.". The Turian said, heading to the pods. Space battles rarely impress him, and that one wasn't an exception. However, the way of how Zuka and Andrew dealt with the Iron Bears' vessel makes the entire affair intriguing. Darvo only hoped that down on the beachhead, there would be something he is good with. The Beast also wanted to feed on upon someone, so it's good for the entire team.

In the meantime, Ara was on the ship that would meet up with the Allegiance. He had no idea what to expect, and what he was told was by no means exhaustive. All he knew was he'd fight mercenaries, who had a plan to flood the universe with some kind of parasite from a ring world. It all sounded unrealistic to him. His mind raced with possibilities, and he wished they'd arrive so he could make sense of it all.

"Ops, sensors?" Andrew commanded.

"No sensor contacts, Commander - but I am picking up faint Tetryon particles not far from here," the Operations officer responded.

"Helm, get us to the drop zone - all personnel to the Orbital Drop Pods," Andrew commanded. "Zuka, you lead the initial force; I'll follow you in with reinforcements once you secure a beachhead."

The Sangheili nodded, and looked to the others. "Let's go; I'll take you to the Drop Bay." The Allegiance steadily approached the ring-world, ready to drop the pods.

For the so-many-th time that trip, Ara decided to double-check his swords. They were made of very durable steel, all sharpened and polished before the trip. They probably wouldn't be so nice for very much longer. But hey, what's the point of a weapon if you don't use it?

The UNSC Allegiance passed the disabled mercenary ship, and the drop began. The initial landing force, if they were already in the pods, would be dropped from the belly of the ship, sent at blazing speed toward the surface of the ring-world. About halfway down, they would feel a decelerating jolt as the brake deployed, and the fall would seem slower. On the surface, the Iron Bears would see the approaching fireballs, and scramble to react. Once the pods touched down, the doors would open, and the landing force would have to contend with surprised mercs that were not at all expecting orbital drop troops.

With A Loud Thud, Blazes pod hit the ground,  she could hear the rounds bouncing off the hatch. Blaze's eyes began to glow behind her helmet, as the hatch popped off  any merc nearby would be met with a wall of  blue flames emanating from the nine tailed vixen as she pushed out of her drop pod.

Any merc not melted away by the fire would soon be hit with highly flammable projectiles from the Vixen's rifle as she not only was able to have  a wall of flame around her, but also shoot her Battle rifle accurately through the wall of flames, even as the wall of flame subsided her armors energy shields flared,  protecting her from any merc 'brave' enough to shoot at her she walked up to an Iron bear merc, who dropped his weapon  in fear and ran away Blaze looked to her allies as if expecting some form of answer to if she should chase after the coward.

Until the landing, Darvo was silent. There was nothing to talk about with anyone. No one knew what the Turian needs, let alone himself. That's why his pod undocked the last and headed in a bit different direction. The pod has fallen behind mercenaries back, producing a lot of dust. The Iron Bears would think that the team plans go wrong, but such a move has provided Darvo enough time to make a decision. Much before exiting from the pod, the symbiote in the Turian has warned the host about multiple living objects. All Klyntar can sense living things. That's why Darvo let the Beast take control over his body. His rifle and armor would not be enough in the current situation. The mercs have outnumbered the team. The process of transforming looks like a black goo enveloping Pax from inside the body. A freaky and ugly process, but that's how it's happening. And if someone might call the Beast as a one covered in ink, that statement would be correct too.

The monster appeared as the ground has started to tremble. The Beast was two times larger than an average Sangheili. Not all mercs have run away because of Blaze's actions as the Iron Bears' forces were scattered all over the surface. The symbiote appearance has immediately distracted all the hired guns' attention from the vixen to the monster. A big, black, ugly creature had teeth all over the face. It was impossible not to note such a thing. Moreso, right after transformation, the Beast has made a high leap in the air. Afterward, landing on a merc, squashing him like he was a pillow. That forced the Bears to start to shoot in the Klyntar. Unfortunately for them, their weapons weren't effective against the symbiote. Kill a Klyntar requires a stream of high-temperature, dense fire. Like Blaze's one. Before the mercs have realized their afoul, almost all of them were sent in the air by powerful monster's punches and kicks. The symbiote decided to left some of them for dinner and broke their necks. All that remained from the Iron Bears mercs are a couple of corpses. The rest of them were lying somewhere else with broken bones after falling from the height.

While the other part of the team was landing and dealing with weakened mercenaries forces, Darvo's second personality has decided to restore stamina. That means to consume the fallen. And so the Beast has begun. Luckily, no one from the team could see the details of Beast's meal. Otherwise, everyone would see Pax as a potential threat.

As a reinforcement warrior, Ara had no choice but to wait for the inevitable. Every second made him more anxious. What took them so long? How was he supposed to help if things went so darn slowly? He almost felt like sticking a sword inside someone on the ship, but he knew that was the worst possible move. They needed everyone, and they needed to co-operate. Killing someone was counter-productive for both.

Zuka dispatched one mercenary after another, making sure to not fire on any allied personnel. The Iron Bears were more than a little surprised to see their 10mm Explosive-Tip Caseless Rounds, fired from outdated M41A Pulse Rifles, glance off the energy shields of Zuka's armor. Zuka felt it was almost a laughable effort; the mercs simply weren't prepared to face professional UNSC ODST and hired personnel. It took no more than fifteen minutes of fighting to secure the beachhead. The Iron Bears facing Zuka chose to retreat, leaving Zuka virtually unscathed.

"'Vadam to the Allegiance - Beachhead secured. Better get down here, Frosty," Zuka radioed, using Andrew's battlefield call-sign, "Preferrably before the Iron Bears can launch a counterattack."

(Everyone, feel free to add in your own spots of securing the beachhead and the Iron Bears' retreat.)

After causing one of the iron bear's guns to explode and melt  by heating up the gun which caused the explosive tips of the ammo to explode in the clip, Blaze moved to Ara's pod, eye glow dimming as she banged on the hatch of Ara's pod and stepped back. "This is... too easy, is it suppose to be this easy?" Blaze asked as she stood next to Ara's pod, waiting for him to get out, gently running her claws across the metal... something had her angsty, or she was still working off the adrenaline rush....

From the tree line near the drop zone, bushes rustled and shifted. Something was moving within the wood line, half-whispers echoing off the trees.
“They killed them bear fellers!”
“But, are they here as ‘new magnamet’.”
“Y’mean ‘management’, Kief.”
“Sh’t yo’ mouth, boy. I know what I said.”
“I-I think they c’n hear us, fellers.”
Three archaic rifles, lever-action repeaters, clunked ammunition into position. The first voice, Kief, called out.
“‘Pendages in the air, fellers! We gat’cha’s surrounded.”
Whoever these people were, it was painfully obvious they were no Iron Bears. Especially as the loud-mouth stepped forward. Like a cutout of a Wild West novel, a four-foot tall creature appeared. His clothes were of simple cotton, a white half-buttoned shirt and blue denim overalls. He was a translucent blue, his eyes little more than shiny black discs. The rifle in his hands was an odd green color, like an emerald but less...hard. He kept the odd weapon on Zuka. “Who’re you here fer, boy?” His voice was gruff, wind torn. A cowboy on an alien planet.

Ara had not waited a moment when he was called to secure the beachhead, and got himself launched ASAP. Unfortunately, the rough landing dazed him a bit. The banging on his pod restored his focus, and soon after he stepped out. He was quite a sight to behold: seven feet of gold and white, with translucent blue accents. His blue eyes glowed behind a unique-looking mask, and on his back he carried two fancy but functional swords.

With a frown, he looked around and spotted the unusual creature standing in front of them. It looked like it had time-traveled into the future. Ara squinted, unsure what to expect of it. It was obviously not their main enemy; else it would've already attacked. Yet, it could still be an enemy. As a precaution, he laid his right hand on the grip of one sword, ready to strike if needed.

Once the beast has satisfied his hunger, Darvo demanded to rejoin with the team. That is, Darvo and the symbiote inside one body can talk to each other in mind. It's like a split personality dysfunction but with the real another person. Others can't hear it, yet they can spend hours together quite well. But someone who has never seen a symbiote before might think about Klyntar as another Flood deviation. A heavily modified but still a parasitic life form. Moreover, the symbiote makes every host pretty violent. It's possible to say that's who bonded with Klyntar has lost the soul. That's why Darvo's speech toward the loud-mouth would sound too arrogant. But the symbiote didn't care too much.

"Oh, look at that. The little one tries to look like a shot caller here. Are you immortal or what?". The creature covered in black goo or fiber said. His tongue was swinging like a lasso as the Beast talk. Darvo didn't like the fact that a stranger was pointing with a gun. And the symbiote didn't hesitate to claim that. Truth told, Pax doesn't control his brains entirely. He shares it with the symbiote inside him, hence rants.

Zuka reacted in kind to the creatures that approached from the treeline - but he held his fire. His weapon was raised and pointed at them, but he did not fire. If they were hostile, they'd have shot at him or joined the fight by now. No, these creatures had motives of their own. Whether that would be a boon or problem was unclear. Zuka's voice was unusually calm - for a Sangheili who was just in combat - when he spoke. "Not a good idea, pointing weapons at a UNSC landing party. Fortunately for you, you are not our target; don't make yourself one. As for what we're here for: We're here to dismantle the Iron Bear mercenary operation at the behest of the United Sangheili Republic. The Sangheili watch over these rings to ensure no one releases the Parasite. That being said, what are you doing here? Your presence was never mentioned in UNSC or USR dossiers of Gamma Halo."

In the distance, a trio of UNSC Pelican Drop Ships were seen approaching.

The creature seemed to relax, lowering his rifle a bit. “Who-Now? I ain’t heard’a them. They comin’ t’take Bohrar land?” He looked honestly confused.
A voice came from the tree line. “Lookit, brainless. They ain’t left ya hole-ier than the church. So I’m gonna say they ain’t hostile.” Another creature, similar in stature but obviously older, emerged from the bushes. His rifle was slung over his shoulder, odd nubby limbs raised slightly in a peaceful gesture.
“Y’all’ll have t’forgive Kief here. He’s a bit hot-headed. I’m Jedidiah Bohrar. I ‘pologize fer th’rude intr’ductions.” The old blue creature stepped passed his loudmouth counterpart, slapping the gun from his hands. Jed glared at Kief, before continuing. “Kief’s right, though. Them fancy names don’t mean much ‘round here. But, we’ll discuss later. Judging by th’ mess,” he tapped a corpse with his boot for emphasis. “Y’ain’t ‘xactly inconspicuous. Let’s git t’ th’ cave. Meet th’ family.” He motioned for the group to follow, heading back towards the bushes.

Kief shouted, and brought his rifle back up to the sky, as the trio of Pelicans made their pass for landing. He fired up at the transports, the rifle emitting a strange, wet thumps as it lobbed luminous green globs. One splatted against the hull of Alpha Kilo, but quickly wicked away due to the airspeed. Jed had already ducked for cover, sighting his rifle but refraining from firing.

Ara brought his hand away from his sword. That proposal sounded reasonable. Then, he spotted Beast, the black goo monster with an evil look. His eyes turned wide with fear, and his mouth dropped. He blinked a few times to make sure his eyes weren't deceiving him. "You gotta be kidding me," he almost inaudibly whispered to himself. "Is that... thing... on our side? Am I supposed to co-operate with a monster?" He almost forgot to whisper.

Fortunately, the arrival of the drop ships brought welcome distraction. He ducked when Kief shot one, then turned to him. "What are you doing," he asked, "Those are our allies!"

The black creature seemed to be calm, but Kief's ignore of the symbiote question has raised a slight hostility toward him. Once Kief shot in the Pelican, the Klyntar's response was quick. Both Pax and symbiote agreed that the met creatures were trying to lure in a trap Zuka's team. Or took an attempt. Hence they needed to be eliminated as soon as possible. In its turn, the monster has swiftly approached Kief and kicked him with leg applying all its sheer force. The kick by Beast has the power of several tons of pure physical strength. Even if the punch doesn't kill Kief, it should make him unable to use his weapons or move. That should tell his family or friends, that messing with the UNSC is a wrong decision. All in all, the Klyntar is a violent species and has a short fuse when it comes to cause pain, havoc, and wreck. It's a dog that needs to be kept on a short leash.

"Return into the dirt!". The black monster growled, before performing the kick. Darvo wanted to show what he thinks about newcomers, so he tried to punch Kief into his buddies. To make the situation worse - even if the symbiote miss, that won't stop him from causing damage to the one who was daring enough to attack the UNSC.

The small creature recoiled, sailing backward like a blue cannonball, disappearing into the bushes. Jed backed away, rifle brandished.
“E-Easy! Th’ Bear fellas’re in them birds! Long-Eye’s seen ‘em!” He looked pleadingly at the group, before retreating farther into the bushes.

Ara shook his head and brought a hand to his forehead.
"Oh jeez," he sighed, "one misunderstanding and it's already ruined. That while we already were tense... Speak of unfortunate."

He turned to Zuka. "Commander, allow me to try and get this straight with those Bohrar creatures. I know we are on unstable foot with them, but we at least owe them an apology... And an explanation. Send one or two men along, but please, not the goo monster." He said this last bit softer as to not draw Beast's attention. He knew he was no match for its sheer physical strength, but he had some tricks up his sleeve.

Beast was pleased with the result, even though it didn't happen as he planned. He hoped that strangers have understood why the symbiote did so and won't do anything silly anymore. Truth told, the Klyntar wanted to play with them. Alas, the playfulness of such creatures is often considered as an attempt to kill. Regardless, Blaze's actions have their consequences: the black monster was able to avoid the flame attack. However, Darvo wasn't surprised by what has happened. The Turian has expected something like this. And before the ex-Hierarchy trooper could say anything, there was a whisper in his mind. It was calling his name somewhere far away. It wasn't the symbiote inside him for sure, yet the alien couldn't resist. Who and why - now it's a personal affair.

"How nice! But I won't blame you. I'm a monster as your kind might say. What if I say monsters don't always look as such? Think about it, UNSC.". The Beast said, then performed a massive leap in the air, disappearing in the jungle forests. If things don't go south, Darvo will meet the team again. But even in the worse case, Zuka and Andrew don't need to worry about him. By all documents, Pax is dead, so reporting the death of an already deceased person is silly. But the Turian and his parasitic buddy is a unique couple, and the former was sure, he hasn't seen the team for the latest time. At the same time, Darvo can't be confident if he encounters them as allies or as enemies. Time will show.

(OOC: I'm postponing my participation here, so feel free to continue w/o me. Happy RP'ing, people!)

"Would someone mind explaining to me what the hell just happened?" Andrew growled. Zuka looked to the strange creatures.

"Later, Frosty," he said. He approached the creatures and kept his weapon lowered. "And for the record, those are UNSC Pelican Drop Ships. The Iron bear mercs use a very different, very outdated drop ship for ferrying troops and vehicles. No need to shoot at them."

"Whose the wise guy?!" Sheila the pink  Minotaur like creature asked, hands glowing a neon green aura.

Ara was still in shock. He was almost certain Beast couldn't have overheard him. And if it didn't, it meant it also had some kind of psychic powers. That might spell more trouble. As he thought, he realised he'd best exlain the situation to the captains of the drop ships.

Ara raised his voice, saying, "No need for panic, everyone! There has just been a big misunderstanding. We have encountered an unknown lifeform on this planet, and they mistook the Pelicans for Iron Bears' ships. They took a shot at you in self-defence, and things kind of went out of control from there. I hope to re-establish a relationship- with your permission, of course."

As the crew regrouped and planned, several muffled pops echoed from the trees, followed by shouting and the rapid staccato of automatic fire. Then, more muffled pops responded. A firefight has begun in the distance, obviously between the local creatures and the mercenaries.

"Sounds like the Iron Bears have another outpost or camp site nearby," Zuka commented.

"Let's take it out of commission," Andrew commanded. "All forces, form up on me!" In modified M12 LRVs, the force would head for the sound of the gunfire.

At the Iron Bear battle site, the Iron Bears' combat armor provided enough protection against the local creatures' weapons - but not all of the mercenaries had such armor. Most of those present were newbs or grunts.

Ara realised he had little choice but to enter the fray. At the same time, however, he kept a strict moral code which prevented him from killing anything capable of higher reasoning.
But, there was nothing preventing him from incapacitating them. If he just caused a few crippling wounds to each merc, he'd subdue them easily enough. He definitely had the skill to do so. That said, he drew both his swords and jumped into the battle.

His gold and white armour suddenly turned to black and gunmetal. His blue accents lost colour too. Despite camouflaging himself, he did not hide his sword mastery. With great speed and accuracy he cut tendons left and right, crippling arms and legs wherever he went. The iron bears' armour proved to be a problem for his blades, so he left those with heavy armour for the rest of the troops. It was obvious he maximally used his training advantage.

The Mercs kept streams of hot lead sweeping across craggy, tooth-like boulders on the side of a small hill. Six of the blue creatures hunkered behind granite, snapping off quick, panicked shots. They were pinned, doomed without assistance.

As Ara first entered the fray, the mercs turned to engage, turning already red-hot barrels on the strange metal man with the flashing blades. The rock-bound blue creatures held their fire, for fear of hitting a supposed ally.

Not long after, M12 Warthog LRVs burst into the area, firing on the Iron Bear mercs. UNSC Marines and ODSTs drilled those that didn't retreat. And on the gun of one of those vehicles was Andrew, dressed fully in his Spartan armor. He looked toward the locals. "You boys need a hand?" he asked. Zuka arrived almost immediately after Andrew's comment.

Blaze of course wasn't too fond of riding in a warthog or vehicle for that matter so sat in the passenger seat, arms cross over her chest,

Elsewhere on the field the large Bull like Shiela jumped out of a warthog that had slid into a few Iron bear marines letting loose streams of 14.5mm rounds from her own Heavy machine gun at the Iron Bears making sure  to  avoid friendly fire against her own forces and avoid hitting any of the blue creatures.

As the forces entered the camp, Ara found himself caught in the crossfire. Knowing his swords would not fare well in a gunfight besides standing in the middle of the chaos, he decided it was better to work his way out. With quick and agile movement, he almost danced towards the camp edge. He still injured mercenaries as he went, leaving them unable to fight back. One could consider him worth watching, were it not for the raging battle.

The largest of the blue creatures, who stood at only 4’ 2’’, stepped from his cover as the Iron Bears were routed. He adjusted his straw hat and nodded to Zuka. “Thanks, fella. We were goners without the help.” He rested his rifle across his shoulder. “Names Obidiah. Call me Obbi, if’n yer feelin’ friendly. Heard you an’ yours got in a bit of a tussle wit’ dat hot-head Kief an’ ol’ Jed.” He chuckled, holding up an appendage to sto Zuka’s immediate response. “Don’ worry about it, friend. Kief’s a fiery cuss, and gettin’ kicked around was comin’ to him. ‘Sides, other than a few scrapes, he’s fine.” Obbi adjusted his suspenders with pride. “Takes more than fists or a boot t’being down a Bohrar boy.” Obbi motioned for Zuka to follow, as the other Bohrars emerged from cover. “Our camp’s not far,” Obbi said. “Half mile north. Keep them wheeled monsters back, though. I don’ think we can accommodate ’em.”

"I'll keep the LZ secure, Zuka," Andrew told Zuka. "Meyers! Argus! Head out with Commander 'Vadam to our friends' hideout, see what they need!"

"Yes, sir!" the two aforementioned marines replied. They followed Zuka as he followed Obidiah.

"How long have you been here, Obbi?" Zuka asked. "Between the Iron Bear mercs and the inevitable Flood presence on this ring, it hardly seems a safe place to settle."

When the troops had been dealt with, Ara's armour reversed to its original colours, and he sheathed his swords. He wondered whether he should visit the Bohrar with Zuka. Then again, it might be better to stay and fight the Iron Bears. He could deal a seriously crippling blow, after all. Besides, they probably didn't need him with those creatures. He stood there for a few minutes, pondering his options. After some weighing, he decided he was more valuable in the fight, so he remained with the force.

Obbi tilted his head, confused. "Been here for...pbbt...generations now. My great-great-great grand-'genitor said he woke up here after some kinda monsters got loose. Been here ever since. Not in the rocks, more down th' coast. Josiah's Rest got founded about two decades ago, back when I was just a squirt. S'where we're headed." He then turned to Blaze. "Tribe? Ain't no tribe, marm, and ain't all my kin neither. Just Cleetus, Harold, and miss Linnette." Obbi motioned for his cohorts to approach, all smiling. The old blue creature returned his attention to Zuka. "Them well armored fellers, they're mean ol' cusses. Been kidnapping my kin soon as th' got here. But, I'm guessin' I ain't got the answer's yer pinin' for. The 'Luminated One'll know what's what. Should be in th' chapel. Usually is. I'll introduce ya when we get home."

Before long, the tops of incredibly short buildings peeked over the hills and dells, and the quiet murmur of activity carried across the wind. Obbi motioned at Cleetus, a portly blue-goo man, and Linnette, a slight blue-goo woman, and the pair ran towards town. As the two crossed over the hill's crest, a bell tolled twice. Obbi's smile returned, and he waved a translucent hand in the air. "Sent Cleet and Linn up t'give the all-clear, 'less the snipers try an' take y'scalp. But, more on that later. Y'gotta meet m'kin first."

"Astonishing," Zuka commented. "You've been here so long, yet neither the USR Records nor the recovered Archives of the Covenant make any mention of your people on this Ring."

"Almost seems like they had some way of avoiding detection - like a cloaking device," Private Argus said.

"How is it your people have avoided detection so long? And for that matter, how did the Iron Bears come to detect your people?"

"On that matter, what do the Bears have against you and your kin?" Blazed asked, as she followed along, her tails flowing freely behind her the armor around them materializing  away to reveling her 9 tails and brilliant yellowish colored silky fur.

Sheila followed along quietly, talking not being her strong suit...she didn't talk much anyway.

Ara saw them off, scratching his chin. He thought out loud, "Interesting... they don't seem to be an advanced species. I'd say they avoided detection simply by being technologically far behind. After all, they seem reclusive and they aren't emitting any signals to detect. Or, there has been too little activity here, allowing them to go under the radar. It could also be both. Hard to say... I'd have to see for myself. Speaking of which...!" He suddenly dashed after the group. The curiosity got the better of him.

Obbi again looked confused. "'Detect'? I 'spose we kinda made ourselves known when they started parading around in them big ol' metal bird...things...Tacitus went to say hello, y'know, as good, neighborly folk do. They responded by shooting poor Tacitus dead. Been a blood feud ever since. As fer the matter of the "USR", "Archives" and "Covenant", they don't mean much t'me. Or to my kin, fer that matter. But, the 'Luminated One may know what you mean."

As the troupe crested the hill, the town came into view. Several small log cabins sat clustered near a somewhat larger, but still small, water mill. The water wheel churned slowly, partially submerged in a little stream. Several blue creatures meandered around the well-trod paths. Although rough, a comparably opulent chapel sat at the edge of the treeline, a pleasant glow emanating from the windows. A quiet town, despite everyone carrying some sort of firearm.

"They shot him dead?" Zuka said. "Odd, even for them. Must be jumpy, then." Zuka looked over the town, following Obbi as he did. It reminded him of something Andrew had in his personal archive, but he couldn't quite place what it was. "Who's the leader among you?" Zuka asked Obbi.

Ara also kept his swords sheathed. He didn't want to worry them needlessly. Still, he remained wary. The Iron Bears could attack them, though it was unlikely they'd strike on an armed settlement. He asked Obbi: "That reminds me, did those 'bear fellers' attack your village? We could give you a hand in defending it. Besides, you got me curious... Just who is this 'Illuminated One'?"
Title: Re: Coalition Operations IV: Monsters of the Past

Obbi chuckled. “Leader? Ain’t no leader here. Speak y’piece. If enough folk feel yer right, then we’ll do it yer way.” He then turned to Ara. “I ain’t too sure. Definitely knows a lot, but I dunno what he’s sayin’. Somethin’ ’bout our purpose? Sounds like nonsense t’me. As fer the Bears? They don’t got the guts t’come near the town. Sammy scares the daylights outta them. He’s prolly nappin’ now, if not just hidin’. He likes basements and caves.” Obbi wandered as he spoke, stopped at a small dwelling. Outside, a rocking chair sat vacant, and the little blue man eased himself into the seat, speaking to the crew. “Y’all carry on now. I need t’rest. Head to the church. Your questions’ll be answered.”

Zuka looked over, seeing the church in the distance. he gave Obbi a respectful - and grateful - nod, and headed for the church. Questions swam in his mind. Clearly, these creatures had been here some time.  But how had they evaded detection? And why were they here? Were they some sort of Forerunner project? Zuka didn't know. There was no mention of them anywhere in the Covenant Archive. ONI had no intel on them. Zuka hoped that some of these questions would be answered by this "Luminated One".

Ara took point and ran ahead to the church. He stopped in front of it to get a better look at the building. His mind ran, just like Zuka's. He reasoned, If these creatures have been here so long without detection... I wonder. Did this "Illuminated One" bring them here? Was this some sort of genetic experiment? Did this person, or whatever else, build this civilisation? Only one way to find out...
Cautiously, he stepped inside as he let his eyes wander across the room.

The inside of the church was starkly opposite to the village. Beautiful metal lined the walls and floor, etched and scratched with odd, misspelled phrases and pictographs. The little blue folk in here were dressed in robes, kept their heads bowed, and muttered nonsensical phrases under their breath. At the far end of the church sat what appeared to be a steel statue, the head illuminated with a blue light. To the Bohrar’s, it was the face of their prophet. The Illuminated One. However, the little metal orb was, to those with the knowledge, a Monitor. It’s gaze, denoted by the blue beam of light sweeping the floor, rested upon the visitors.
“Leave us,” a voice boomed. “I must judge these visitors.”
The Bohrar priests gasped and shuffled out quickly, making sure to scatter any peeping toms. Once the Bohrars dispersed, and with a little bit of effort, the Monitor dislodged itself from the statue.
“Thank the Forerunners you’re here. I couldn’t stand listening to those-those...simpletons! I cannot hold even a phantom of a complex discussion with them before they hit the dirt. Welcome! Welcome to Installation 07. And just in time, too.”

Ara couldn't believe it. The "Illuminated One", a monitor? And what was this "Installation 07" supposed to mean? He stood still, pondering the purpose and reason. It would appear this race was some sort of secret project after all. But, he could not think of a single reason for it. Not to mention why it was here, of all places. He added, "Not to mention, third: what's with this 'Installation 07' business?"
Title: Re: Coalition Operations IV: Monsters of the Past

“My designation is 07-117649,” the Monitor began, excitement almost tangible in its voice. “I wasn’t given a title. Installation 07 is, well, the seventh installation in the Array. But, from what little I could receive, it sounds like the UNSC have all but destroyed the Array. Installation 07’s second purpose, the brainchild of Builder Arch-of-Change. He believed there was a way to counter the Gravemind without destroying all life in the galaxy. And so, working with Lifeshaper Tu’um-Shaddak, created...those.” The silver bauble nodded towards the church door. “A brilliant idea, a creature that cannot be corrupted by the Gravemind, yet fully capable of fighting its offspring.” The Monitor stared toward the door for more than a few moments before shuddering. “Right! You’re just in time! The Iron Bears Mercenary Company has, from what I gather, started looking for either the control spire on this installation, or where the Flood are held.”

Sheila thought for a moment "No, the UNSC Decommissioned the Array." She explained "Why do these people..." She paused looking around. "Worship you? Why are you here of all places, Are there any Flood on this installation?" the large pinke wolf in a set of armor that made her look like a giant bull with a skull for a head asked.

Blaze looked around the room. "Did these creatures build this place?" The nine tailed vixen asked.

07 bobbed in a sort of nod. “The Flood are here, yes. Locked behind a secret, secure vault. However, as is their nature, the Iron Bears seem to control this installation, be it an attempt to restore the array or, unlikely as it is, release the Flood. They are still secure, but they’re very close to the control spire. A misplaced explosive of enough yield could free the Gravemind‘s offspring.”

Ara realised this was trouble. He had heard the stories. They were terrifying enough, but seeing them confirmed between the lines was worse. He shook his head. "Well! If you ask me, we don't want either scenario to happen. I'd say we get to the control spire pronto if we want to prevent disaster. Which way do we go?"
